BurstNET - $6.36 512MB Windows VPS, $4.76 512MB OpenVZ VPS

BurstNET Burst.Net has just sent me their current offer. 20% off Xen HVM-based Windows VPS was previously only available in Miami, but now with coupon code US20WIN, you can get the same discount in also Los Angeles CA and Scranton PA. “VPS PACKAGE #1” is now $6.36/month after the discount.

  • 512MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • 2x IPv4 + IPv6
  • Xen HVM/SolusVM

There are heaps of OS to choose from — as long as it is Windows :) Budget Windows VPS will also be available in UK by the end of month, although it wasn’t clear whether the discount code can be applied to UK Windows VPS.

Their OpenVZ-based Linux VPS is also on sale at 20% off recurring discount when you apply coupon code MEMBANK20. Promotion expires 15 July. “VPS PACKAGE #1” in this case would be $4.76/month.

  • 512MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • 2x IPv4 + IPv6
  • OpenVZ/vePortal

Again, the discount is available to all budget OpenVZ VPS in Scranton, Miami and Los Angeles. I think there is enough say about BurstNET here on LowEndBox. Lots of budget providers use their facility or lease servers from them. Probably one of the biggest listed on this blog. They don’t have many votes on the current poll at the moment.

  3. So that is the company saying customers should get cr@p services because they are paying 5 bucks a month?
Burst may be the biggest in this industry, but they treat customers paying low prices “cheaply”, I would rather put the money on smaller companies offering way better services.

        • Do you really think we don’t care/appreciate about our client base?!$? After 20+ years in the business, I assure you not only do we care about our clientele, we care too much. The reactions you see sometimes from us in public forums is due to us caring about the company (inclusive of our client base, our employees, and the company as a whole) tremendously, and taking any negative postings about the company’s performance personally. We do not go about our business as if we are selling the company in the near future, and just put on a smile and eat anything anyone just says about us. That is not the case, and we have been doing this for 20+ years now, and this is our livlihood, and how we support our families. We are going to defend our company, and our livlihood therefore, if something nonsensical, false, exaggerated, or plain ridiculous is posted about us.

Be happy that we care, and not just grabbing your money! ;-)

We can argue over this for ages but posting “10Mbps is more than getting your money’s work for a $5-$8 VPS” is not friendly. Yes people should learn to use support tickets and expected decent service from a LEB provider.

While my testimony confirms that the support at support.burst.net is friendly and timely BUT after reading your comments many would think otherwise. Please do think about this.

        • @BurstNET: When you are providing a service, there are two parties here, you and your customer, your feelings are hurt when the customers make a negative comment about your services, which is understandable. However, when you make a comment like what Asim has quoted, it is bad PR and makes the customer feels bad, and even worse, make everyone think if they are a customer of Burst, that is how they will be treated.
Make yourself looks good, that is a golden rule in any service industry.

    • Do NOT put words in our month. We NEVER said that. We simply stated that expectations should be tempered on a $5/month service, and you should not expect to be able to run it like a $100/month Dedicated Server. If you purchase a $5/month service from us with reasonable expectations of what $5/month in service is like, you will far more than get your money;s worth from us.

      • @BurstNET: Read what you said yourself as if someone else wrote it and think what kind of picture you’ll get. Nobody is expecting a ridiculously good performance on a LEB, but when you guys have a problem, stand out, admit the error and fix it quickly is better than telling your customers that they are having unrealistic expectations.
Not trying to teach you how to run your business, but at the end of the day, my understanding of “customer service” is “serving customers”, not telling them this is what you get because you only paid 5 bucks a month.

        June 24, 2011 @ 3:50 pm | Reply
        • We tell things like it is, and if a client is getting more than they are paying for, and expecting unreasonable levels of service in comparison to what they are paying, and the technology behind the service they are purchasing, we have to tell them that. It may not be what they want to hear, but we don’t beat around the bush, and waste our time, not our client’s time, and are just straight-forward about it.

You are only required to send such in if you do not pass our automated fraud detection processes, or we manually feel there is something suspicious with your account. It is a one time deal, and then you are cleared for all future orders without having to send such information in again. We have to protect ourselves against fraud, if we want to remain in business for the long run.

If you don’t like the process, then go with a company that is a fly-by-night, does not require anything for the approval process, setups up orders no matter what….then we’ll see you back here in a few months stating they rare out of business, ran away with your money, nodes overloaded, server seized by the FBI, etc…

    • Hi Mike,

In general with all shared services, we cannot guarantee any specific minimum speed. This entirely depends on the activity of the rest of the node’s clients. If your seeing this level of bandwidth usage over a longer period of time however, please open a ticket with our technical support department at support@burst.net so they can check for any anomalous activity on your node.

      Thanks!

I was getting speed test results like that constantly over the course of a week. Submitted a ticket and tried hard to get you guys to help, but made no meaningful progress whatsoever. My ticket was bumped to the next level and eventually (I think about a full day later) updated by someone from the Windows team:

“Sorry for the delay. The upload/download speed which you are getting is normal for a vps. As this is a shared node, there is nothing more we could do. If you need better speed and performance, i would suggest you move to a dedicated.”

So there you have it. If you guys expect downstream in excess of 4mbps, you’re better off shelling out the extra $80/month on a dedicated server… or avoiding BurstNET in the first place.

If you plan to host blogs or sites opposed to the US gov and their foreign policy with BurstNET, be careful. One year ago, in July 2010, they shut down perfectly legal site Blogetery hosting 73,000 blogs, just because FBI asked them privately for more info on one blog which had suspicious information. No court order or anything legal, they just pulled the plug without any warning, and treated site owner as a terrorist.

    • There is ALOT more to that story that us just pulling the plug.

      1. Blogetery did NOT host 73,000 blogs…they had less than 100 active blogs we suspect.
We received less than 10 actual complaints from there active user’s about the matter, far less than 73,000 users would have generated.

      2. This was an ongoing issue with them, with multiple AUP/TOS violations. This last one after which we pulled the plug was just the final straw. The client failed to respond timely multiple times to complaints, and even admitted he neglected resolving his AUP/TOS duties. This service was coming down regardless of FBI request…they just expedited it by bringing it to our attention.

      3. This was a serious issue, with terrorist material having been hosted, including bomb making details, and every second mattered…potentially saving lives by taking the service down quickly.

Moral of the story is, if you want to host terrorist websites, we are not he host for that, AND, if you runa hosting service where things can get uploaded like that without your knowledge/involved…then you need to stat on top of your AUP/TOS complaints, and not ignore them for days at a time.

Site blogetery.com is up and running, providing same services as before, hosted not with terrorists as some may think, but in the USA (Dallas, TX), so obviously BurstNET was wrong in their interpretation. There was no terrorist threat at all, they got scared because of one FBI call/email, also government never requested any site to be taken down. There was no bomb threat. Besides, bomb making manuals you can find in books available on Amazon, or find on many US websites. Usually people can distinguish between manuals/books/fiction and real threats. Because of fear and false assumptions that site which was nothing more than a perfectly legal blog hosting service was pulled offline, no other reason.

Not to be off-topic, i am posting about this because if they can do that to a regular customer with dedicated servers, you can expect even worse treatment in case they suspect you of something on a much cheaper and usually oversold VPS.

Actually you later admitted your mistake and allowed him to make backups. So who is lying now? If you were right he would be arrested by now, instead he is running Blogetery at other more sane host, also in the US.

By using this faulty logic “being on vacation is no excuse”, then someone could set up pro-terrorist site on a random VPS you host and call FBI afterwards. Would you still have same arguments then? Also, if FBI had been thinking in the same way as you did, they would harass you as well, for being Blogetery host provider. You still don’t see how wrong you are? Not only you never care or stand for your customers, but also it is people like you who are too scared to say anything when they strip your liberties away. You deserve it.

BurstNET is a great value… I have 5 VPS from them and could not be happier with the service I receive for the amount I pay. Their LA facility had some network issues last month, but they seem to have fixed them. The other DCs have been rather solid.

The handful of tickets I have submitted were answered/resolved in just minutes and the speed of each server has been great. They do have some interesting beancounter limits, but it has not been an issue yet.

Thanks for the great service, BurstNET :)

Switzerland may also join the EU this year if negotiations go well.

Can you please try downloading from this link:

      https://184.22.218.82:6767/bigtest.tgz

This is a test file stored on this specific VPS node. I’m unable to replicate these speeds
from the node itself and have eliminated any network-related issues at this time.

If your still seeing low speeds, please open a ticket with our technical support department at

I thought I’d try the Windows package at that low price, it’s been awhile since I’ve worked with Windows servers, though I prefer *nix. Might be educational ;-) It was all setup within a few minutes. May be more than I want to deal with,ATM. I need some reviewing there! However I was impressed with the speed, having had similar results as Asim has already commented on, so I decided to grab a linux package as well.(Both are in Miami DC) It was also setup quickly, however, they added a control panel, so it took a little time for the script to complete. Two days, so far so good. I found LEB about a week ago and it’s been very helpful; I’m new to the VPS thing, having only setup servers at home with freebsd. Happy with BN service so far.

  25. Well, I gambled my semi-successful gaming community on this and I must say…so far I am impressed!! Setup was fast (within 10min of payment), performance is great and I have proven that an OpenVZ LEB w/ only 1.5ghz/1gb RAM can indeed run a Half-Life 2: Deathmatch server quite well- good pings, smooth gameplay!

Now, I am saving about $1100/yr by going VPS vs. fully dedicated. Was paying $100/mo now only $100/yr!! We’ll see how up time is, but I have high hopes, based on all of my research on this company…They seem pretty legit so far!

BurstNET reminds me of SpaceRich, if you know them. :)

After testing US and UK BurstNET VPS with my friend all i can say this provider belongs in lower 30% of VPS hosts. Very unreliable performance, slow HDD I/O (sometimes it takes 10 seconds to respond to commands) and various network lag/errors, even on a Premium VPS. It is obvious they oversell like crazy and when you complain they say VPS is too cheap to expect good performance. Wake up, you can get good performance for the same price elsewhere. There is one thing they are very good at, that is making excuses for themselves on forums and blaming others for all the problems.

Whoever you are, you’re causing so much harm to your company and driving potential customers away — with the kind of comments you make. For a company representative to tell someone in a public space that “you got up on the wrong side of the bed” is just beyond me.

      • I disagree. My NAGIOS machines in Germany, USA and UK AND Pingdom all reported outages and I have been getting back to support about it and they have been denying any downtime or reboots (may be they are right, may be its not a downtime but some other intermediate issue within their cages like router etc) but no further comments on it.

The last comment I received (and I cancelled my VPS afterwards because of these outages) was from Chris on ticket #100-2755742

I’ve been able to locate the following in the logs, but as far as I can tell they don’t really indicate any specific issue and they occurred after your logs state that the VPS went offline. Do you have any errors within Windows?

        Jun 30 07:34:53 xserver4000 kernel: eth0: port 42(vifvm163.0) entering disabled state
Jun 30 07:34:53 xserver4000 kernel: device vifvm163.0 left promiscuous mode
        Jun 30 07:34:53 xserver4000 kernel: eth0: port 42(vifvm163.0) entering disabled state
Jun 30 07:34:55 xserver4000 kernel: device vifvm163.0 entered promiscuous mode
        Jun 30 07:34:55 xserver4000 kernel: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): vifvm163.0: link is not ready

Its a out of box installation of Windows 2008 Server Standard Ed. I have installed Firefox and a few small apps but they cannot reboot the machine. I never rebooted it. The support says that the logs show a reboot but what was the cause? no body tells me. I rest my case

It’s well known fact that burstnet don’t have any outage ever! You should remember that! And in case that PLENTY people complains regarding outage, read it again. Burstnet don’t have outage!!! And if those plenty people are stubborn at WHT or LEB and don’t want to quit or even show their proofs… finally… small segment of burstned maybe had some little outage. Only small segment! Oh, and don’t expect some “we are sorry for that” apology! Burstnet team including their CEO never heard for word “sorry”, never admit mistake and finally it’s all just your fault! Customers which complain are rude annoyance because burstnet have plenty “happy” customers so it must be you who did something wrong!

If you are used to swallowing it up when you are being treated like shit, just keep it to yourself and don’t spoil the market with your low expectations for the rest of us. Low price means small amount of resources provided, not low quality of them.
          Regards.

PS. My comment is not about BurstNET, just this kind of “it’s cheap, don’t be surprised it doesn’t work” attitude really gets to me. I am sure BurstNET does not agree that an inexpensive service should mean bad service either.

@Glass, you’re most likely new around otherwise you would know that burstnet never admit mistake in all those years and their network is perfect above every complain. When someone complain it must be something wrong with him. When few people complain it must be still something wrong with them. But when many people complain, then.. only then.. “small segment of burstnet had downtime”. Just like that without any regret, no apology for all previous “we didn’t have downtime” while they did, etc…
I saw this so many time in last few years merely as observer that I got impression like burstnet is above every critic. They are perfect, they don’t take any, even most innocent constructive critic well and claim their own story disregaring many reports, screenshots, outage service reports, etc, etc.. till the end.
Is it really that hard to say atleast once in year “yes, we had some issues and we are sorry for that”? Why they try to make fools over all those year from so many people? They are most likely good host with as they say most likely plenty “happy customers” but sometimes things go wrong… even on their side and is it really that hard to admit this instead staying permanently “it’s not on our side” wherever they are right or not.

I agree fully and have made the same comments as you in earlier topics I have referenced above. In fact, while I liked everything else from Burst, I have stayed away from picking up VPSs from them at least on two occasions just because of their attitude as I made out from their responses on LEB and WHT.

      • Keep in mind that if a node needs rebooted, FSCK can take quite some time to complete, and for the system to fully come back online. Rebooting a VPS node is not a 30 second process like a Windows home system. With the amount of files and activity on the drives, a VPS can potentially take hours to rebooting, depending on disk sizes.

It is beyond me how some hosts still consider multi-hour fsck be a good excuse for downtime (not specifically pointing at BurstNET here).

Your service is online at this time. Our engineering department is currently working with one our bandwidth providers, High Winds Network Group, to resolve a routing issue. If you ping your server from just-ping.com you'll see that your service is actually online at many locations, but due to the routing issue, it is down at several locations as well. This issue is currently being examined and will be resolved as soon as possible. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

    • Hi,

If you’re experiencing an issue with download/upload speed on your VPS and you appear to be maxing out at about ~4MB/s (equivalent to about 32Mbit/s), please open a ticket with our technical support department at support@burst.net. We’ve noticed this appears to happen from time to time with the default NIC that Xen is set to emulate. A switch to an alternative emulation appears to resolve the issue. Installing the GPLPV drivers also provides a large boost in performance if you wish to try those. In either case, our technical support department can assist you with switching the emulation or helping with driver installation to eliminate this issue.

      Thank you!

    • I’m sorry to hear that, but we cannot replicate your issue, and you are the only one that seems to be having such claimed outages like this. We cannot fix what we cannot verify or replicate. We have no reason not to want to fix it, if indeed such an issue exists.

That specific node you list has been operational just fine:

      [root@xserver4000 ~]# w
      05:45:35 up 26 days, 10:06, 1 user, load average: 5.82, 5.75, 5.44

We attributed some of your issues potentially to your firewall, but cannot replicate/see any other issues as you report them.
If these issues would be occurring, for everyone on the same node, or everyone at that POP, we would know, as we would be getting dozens of complaints, and our monitoring systems would be going off…and they just have not been such. There are thousands of clients serviced at this same POP. We can only assume this is an isolated issue, possibly related to your location/ISP, firewall, configuration, etc…

If this was speed related issues on the SolusVM Windows nodes, which is what most of the other clientele in this thread reported, and not small random outages like you are claiming, then I would say it is a NIC driver update required, as explained here a few posts up, but that is not the case. but with you claiming random small outages, and us not being able to verify or replicate such, not any other reports of the same exact issue, unfortunately there is not much we can do to assist you further…

    • For the record. I fail to see how my NAGIOS machines can report that same VPS to be “fine” and randomly almost 5-10% of the time (8-10hours per month) its in-accessible.

Don’t trust my NAGIOS installation? Ok how about Pingdom? you dont even take Pingdom reports as a sign that there is something wrong, I have shared links to pingdom Public reports in the tickets as well (http://stats.pingdom.com/bhhy8w5fp1o9/345821/2011/06). I am not saying its your node, probably some intermediate hardware (firewall etc).

And I have been a Windows user (primarily) since 1992, I know its firewall. It either blocks traffic OR dont block it but does not keep switching inbetween. How can the same monitors say its online and for 8-10 hours every month it is reported as offline?

      Chris requested in a ticket#100-2716454

Are you able to set your network monitor to send an e-mail to more than one place when it registers a down system? If so, you could have your monitor program notify us so your downtime is minimal.

I followed up with what email these alerts should go to and never heard back.

Your own staff member, Chris, told me this (ticket #100-2755742)

As I explained previously, I rest my case.

      • None of that helps us find, verify, or replicate your claimed issue.
We have no reason not to want to help you, or not find the issue, or not fix it.
I know that does not help you, but unfortunately, this is going to be a case of unless we get further clients complaining of the same issue, or magically all of a sudden see what you are seeing, there is nothing we can do further to assist you.
All we can do is chalk this up to gremlins somewhere out there at this point, and wish you well post cancellation.

        • Replicate network random issues… nice idea, is like… magic.

        • Thanks for the well wishing. I hope you track down that random issue soon for the rest of your clients

        • @Yomero A network admin knows how to track network issues. Its the same as if would say “random code bugs, nice idea … is like magic” but every other developer needs to find those random little buggers called defects and fix them :)

        • There is no need to track anything down, as now that you have cancelled, we have no clientele reporting the issue that you were claiming to be having… ;-)

      • Hi,

Unfortunately without being able to specifically look at your VPS and enable some additional QEMU logging, it’s difficult to speculate on the nature of this issue. What I can say is there is no firewall between your VPS and the rest of the Internet that we run that would be causing that problem. That’s not to say another device may or may not be causing that issue, but from the data provided its hard to speculate. If it was however, that generally would be causing a wider issue then just a single VPS.

Its possible this may have been related to CPU timing between the hypervisor and Windows that caused it to crash and that enabling viridian extensions would have resolved, but again without being able to specifically look at the container logs (and event viewer), that’s hard to say.

        • Andrew, thanks for checking in but it does not matter now. I gave you guys ample days to figure it out (via support ticekt). Now I cancelled and its been terminated as of today (8 hours ago approx).

I had a huge argument in ticket#100-2755742 asking for a check and double check but no body bothered to check this the way you describe it could be checked.

          Anyway, its over for me.

  50. Perhaps BurstNET should purchase a Pingdom account…

So far so good. Got the base budget pkg back on 26th June, with direct admin, good price made even better w/promo. I just upgraded to the next pkg up with, like I’d thought of doing at first, since I wasn’t sure just how much DA might need. At first I didn’t think my promo discount would transfer to the next level,(it didn’t work automatically through the panel), however that was fixed up by the billing dept; so I think this pkg (VPS Package #2) should do well memorywise for starters. No downtime other than my own;a few reboots/reinstalls initially. No real issues, had some questions, setup, ptr record request, etc, all answered much quicker than expected,by either Brian,Benji,or Guy. Jennifer on the billing questions. The performance is as good as it was at first, a few slowdowns here and there, depending on the time of day,(or perhaps my ‘box neighbors’) nothing unbearable…on the Miami datacenter. I like it.

I’ve been using BurstNet for a fairly low end windows vps for some time now. Initially, I bought the low-end box special, then paid for the upgrade and have been a happy camper ever since.

For me, the fact that I’ve had zero down-time and perfect system stability, all with good throughput has meant that my handful of marketing apps keep going with no babysitting required on my part.

I’ll be purchasing another mid-range windows vps in the next day or two, again from BurstNET. Frankly, I can’t see any compelling reason to try another provider when I can go with Burst at $12.95/month.

Their OpenVZ-based Linux VPS is also on sale at 20% off recurring discount when you apply coupon code MEMBANK20. Promotion expires 15 July. “VPS PACKAGE #1″ in this case would be $4.36/month.

Any update for coupon code ?
