LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

MountSpot - $6.59 512MB OpenVZ VPS in India

Updated December 2011 — Dev has been selling/sold MountSpot.com on Flippa and IP address stopped resolving on 1 December 2011.

MountSpot We rarely have any low end VPS from an Asian provider, but here is one — MountSpot. Incorporated in Hong Kong and have servers with CtrlS/Tier IV data center in India. They are also giving LowEndBox readers some special discount. Use promo code Lowendbox to get 70% off recurring discount. Their “Explorer Virtual Server” plan would be $6.59/month after the discount, which has

  • 512MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 250GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • 2x IP addresses
  • OpenVZ

Direct sign up link. Very nice looking website, except it’s… PINK. Domain registered in May 2011 and running a pair of NS on the same hardware. No SSL on the ordering pages. Useless ToS which only covers domain registration. They do claim to have 7/24 telephone support on their contact page, yet on the very same page they show telephone support is only available for around 11 hours a day. They also have a server status page, except it shows “No Servers are currently being monitored”.

I think for those who are looking for a low end VPS near south Asia, it’s probably worth a try as there does not seem to be many alternatives. However I think it’s still quite new as a company and still has quite a few things to iron out.

Discount code doesn’t look like it’s working. It still says $21.95 a month.

Also, when I try to register on low end talk, I get an error that my “last ip address” is 10 characters too long…. probably because I’m coming from an IPv6 address.

    • IPv6 issue has been fixed. I guess a lot of software is just not IPv6 ready yet…

      • That’s is correct. We will recommend anyone to use IPv4 because of their several benefits.

I never had hosting in India (for obvious no need reason), but from prices I seen this is really a too good to be true for such location. Well I’m sure there will be a lot of takers on this, so feel free to report the results.

Are you sure there services are in India? Datacenter prices http://www.ctrls.in/buyonline/us/linux-vps.php 512mb ram 100gb bw – 65$. Colocation – 8 U Server Unit Space 300 GB Data Transfer Price $ 490/Mo.

I really can’t see how this offer can even be backed up SOLELY by 250GB Bw, when for 490$ you get 300GB Bw for 8 racks.

From 10:00am to 10:52am UTC the CtrlS network showed huge packet loss and increased latency. If you ran the wget test during that period the network issues explain the low throughput.

BTW the node’s clock must be adjusted by MountSpot as its date/time is wrong.

Hardly. On OpenVZ time inside VE is not virtualized and all VEs use the same clocksource taken from HN. Sure there are special permissions you could be allowed to change the node’s date/time but I guess is not the case.

Interesting to see an offer from India, I know CtrlS is a great data center. Hoping mountspot is able to continue this setup in the long term – I would be happy to pick this one up once my current tenure with other providers is complete.

  24. In fact the connectivity between China and ctrls.in is not that good, it will go through NTT(JP) or singtel with China Unicom, and go to lax with China Telecom, just worse than a pure Japan or Singapore VPS.
But those two locations are much more expensive than this offer, and just as the author say “there does not seem to be many alternatives”.

    • We are trying to enhance our network. In the upcoming future, we are gonna be at a very robust network. Presently, we are trying to attract as many customers as possible to India based hosting since we are confident about giving them their desired platform which they expect from elsewhere. We hope the time won’t be far away when Indian-based VPS are used normally like its with other top IT nations.

That’s strange. To justify already paid VPS usage before even get it?

Some might write you short and simple reason: “curisity”.
Or: “it’s none of your business as long as I use it regarding TOS”.
          Or: “I don’t know yet.”
          etc..

Does this “curisity” seems like a good reason to spend few dollars? Does this makes you happy enough to create damn already paid vps?

Well some peple from LEB actually do this. Even more… some people here “collect” interresting vpses without doing anything with them most of the time. What do you expect from those to reply you?
Don’t you have TOS with which every person agree before sign up? If yes… your pre-justification of potentially legit users which agree with TOS and pay for service isn’t anything else than nuisance.

Unless you WARN THEM UPFRONT through ordering system or TOS that after payment they will get through little interrogation and then you will decide if they deserve your vps or not.

Mountspot.com you don’t give away FREE service wich would require justification. You give away paid service with term of service which every your customer agree with.

They did this already. You have TOS, don’t you? They agreeded to use it regarding your terms of service. Which part of them… that’s none of your business as long they don’t break it. People’s legit projects regarding TOS aren’t your concerns.

I do not say it will prevent abuse but it can be good measurement to get know your customer, as it can give the host a quick overview on the intended use of the VPS and can take actions accordingly.

E.g if customer answers: Minecraft, allows us to put them on a dedicated game node.

Quickweb asks customers “Intended use of VPS?” and provides a drop down list with options.

One of the answers: IRC Server (not allowed!)

MountSpot could select to provide same method, make it a part of the order page and refund customers who do not want to co-operate.

Not bullet proof but every host should be in their right reject suspect customers, just like at the local club. :)

Afterwards i was told to pay another 6,99 $, because i ordered 6 IPs which have been billed with 70 % discount too.

Seriously, i’ve already paid and have a pain in my *** before i even started to use my VPS. Because i’ve already had a LOT of bad experiences with providers listed here (not LEBs fault but due to the fact its low-end-providers), i’ve requested a full chargeback from MountSpot.

We are sorry for the inconvenience but you were given 70% discount on the IPs

Adam there are TERM OF SERVICES which do this, not further interrogation after you already pay for VPS. When I sign up with some host I needed to accept their TOS which tell me what I am allowed and what not.
Of course TOS can be broken, but that’s same as reply on their interrogation.

Kindly let us know what purpose is for your VPS.
We need to know this before we setup your VPS.

There’s only one logic answer on this. And I answered it with agreeing with your TOS. On sign up I agreed that I will use it regaring your TOS/AUP. Can I go back to work now?

  26. We have to know the purpose of the VPS in order to prevent malicious usage. Even though, we do allow many of the uses which other hosts do not but we still can’t be too open minded to allow anyone with anything. With @spirit: Its just a process of business. If our customers won’t be open with us, i don’t think a standard business relation can be maintained. You should instead respect our intentions as we do with yours.

TOS is document which tell in details all what can be done and what cannot be done with your vps. When someone agree with it what else need to explain to you? To go into details about his/her legal projects? Sorry, but that’s not your business

If you want to bother LEGAL customers with interrogation do it before they pay for vps. After? Only if TOS are broken.

We are talking about a $6.59 512MB 250GB bw @ CtrlS VPS + SolusVM in a country where until recently hardly you would find a VPS costing under $50-60 USD. The MountSpot LEB offer is unique and their initiative should be praised.

Seriously I couldn’t find constructive criticism. Several providers around the world block ports even though you ordered an unmanaged VPS and the question about the intended use is not that unusual. I prefer to answer this simple question than send copies of passport and proof of residence.

So you find like standard that when you try to change SSH port on VPS and you cannot, host reply you with “i see no need for doing that” – or something like that? If they complicate for something as simple as port open request then I can imagine how can be with some more advanced vps usage and requests.
Price, location … it doesn’t mater. That should not be excuse to prevent even standards VPS usage.

[So you find like standard that when you try to change SSH port on VPS and you cannot, host reply you with “i see no need for doing that” – or something like that?]

No. Recently I ordered a VPS from BigBrain and I was unable to change SSH port from 22. I complained here at LEB and the provider said I must open a ticket specifying a port I want. Is this reasonable? No for me. Change of SSH port is standard security measure and a provider allowing only port 22 by default is weird.

In the MountSpot case I understood ports 50 000 – 64 000 are blocked but any port under 50 000 may be used (in fact I changed SSH port and it worked fine).

And such nonsense replies like “Sir i see no need for ports..” make vps hosts higher, a lot higher as time have costs and people which need to NORMAL STANDARDA vps to work often don’t have time to deal with such nonsenses. There’s only one acceptable reply in this specific situation: “sir, it’s done – requested ports are open”.

Sorry but my point was more in this line: “because location and low price you should adjust your demands for the reality in that part of the world.” International bandwidth is expensive, limited, and bad quality in most Asia/Oceania countries, there are well known huge problems with peering between the national carriers, and regarding the price is simple: I’m operating in that market for many years and never saw a provider offering a 512MB VPS under $10 in Asia Pacific, Australia or New Zealand region. Then an appraisal of the MountSpot offer with adjusted realistic lowered expectation says it is a great offer in that region of the world and they have my respect to be trying to deliver a first class service despite that some clueless users and unhappy competitors may say.

To clear up some things here:

I’m a pretty long time reader of LEB and my intention was _not_ to make this webhoster bad. In fact i would not have ordered their VPS if i would not appreciate the offer.

Secondly i am not one of those “hey lets order this and lets order that”, when i order a VPS i am willed to use it – i dont like someone judging me without any knowledge of what i do with my VPs – thanks.

Third: I’ve told their support that i dont want to use the VPS anymore because the problems started like my old hoster (CityNetHost) and this time i better cancel before these problems go on. Indeed, MountSpot offered to ask the Datacenter to open the ports for me, but also port 22222 for example was blocked too (my common SSH port) and this is below 50000.

MountSpot tried their best to satisfy me, but as a old-man-in-hosting-business i see that they’re pretty new to this kind of business and would like to give them more time to establish their company in the market and gain more knowledge before judging to hash about them.

Also i’ve told them to not fully refund me, i’ve told them to keep 2 $ off the 6,59 for their service, time and support. As you see i am not bitching around, i just wanted to show off facts.

      Kind regards.

One thing i would like to clear is, we never refused to open the ports >50000 for Florian and nor do we ever interfere between client’s business. We tried to bring a unique offer in Asia region, as stated by Francisco. If we are trying to do something better than others, we need at least a bit co-operation. And in the case of Florian, honestly, i really don’t see any flaw at our end. Either the people commenting here don’t know the full conversation or they love commenting without any knowledge. Florian had been refunded immediately without any questions and that’s a true example of our efforts to satisfy, whether be it a new order or a refund request.

    I just tried to order.
However the price doesn’t seem very correct.
Based on the what was wriiten in this LEB offer, I should get a 70% discount right?
When ordering the VPS (using the given above link), a paying per 6 months, I get to a price of $92.63.
The normal price per 6 mnoths is $108, so with the 70% off it should give me a price of $32.4.
    Please explain.

Also about the ipv6 addresses, I asked for a test ipv6 address on LEB, never got one. Asked about it via the chat/email function on your site, again no answer.
Can you at least answer that too?
    * is the ipv6 address you will give a native one?
    * can I get a test ipv6 address?

That does not explain what you wrote on “On August 6, 2011 @ 8:22 am”, on the page of this same offer.
          So try again to explain…..

oh come on, you have been given a quite clear explanation. If you have bought the VPS solely because of the earlier mistaken information about IPv6 being available, I am sure they will gladly provide you with a refund.
And as for the bluntest possible way of putting it: on Aug 6 they probably thought they can enable it, but then checked with the d/c later, and that turned out to be not the case at this moment.

@rm: I didn’t buy the VPS for the reason stated before (price is not correct). And no they didn’t say they made a mistake on Aug 6th, they simply ignore the fact they said there was/is ipv6. Their current statement is that there isn’t ipv6.

    • We won’t be supporting IPv6 for now. We have some plans to do it in near future. So that’s all what i can state. Dirk: You can go ahead paying monthly, if you have a problem, let me know.

It’s now changed to $16.46/mo, and it’s not “2x IP addresses” anymore, now it’s 1 IP + extra IPs are $3.00/mo.

Personally I would very much like to see to a LEB-qualifying VPS offer in China, Taiwan, HK, Korea or Japan.

    • The lowendbox exclusive coupon was changed for while. But the old 70% off is being continued with “supersaver”. We will be bringing a whole new offer for LEB readers soon with some surprises.

My VPS is running fine although the unscheduled 12 minute downtime (and reboot) occurred 6 hours ago.

        Uptime: 99.9126% [9 d 11 h]
        Downtime: 0.0874% [11 m 57 s]

        • The downtime was due to RAM upgrade of server. We had tried to do it in off hours.

I wonder why they put Mr. Clean on the datacenter page (http://www.mountspot.com/datacenters.html), when it’s an Asian firm.

    • That’s because we are providing Asia-Based hosting with world-class features and its available world-wide.

Hummm, if I am a Chinese guy running a company in India should I post a picture of Chinese or Indian people?

What bothers me in hosting sites are pictures of a bunch of decorated desktops. Fortunately Mountspot´s site designer kindly spared us and shows 1u servers :-)

@Francisco: My point was that its a case of individuality. Why not presenting pictures from people from the “region” the company operates from? If i go to France I want to eat french food. I don’t care about KFC or McDonalds there.

Mounstop is very strong in Marketing and I guess they don`t want to position the company as regional because this a bad thing if you are selling your services worldwide — prospects can lose interest due time zone, currency, language, culture, regional holydays, etc.

If I’m a car-seller I would always advertise with “Made in Germany”. If I’m from France I would always make my wine lokk french. I guess the problem we encounter today is that we produce more and more robot-like, indistinguishable objects participating in one big bubble-market without any individuality.
