QuickWeb - $7 128MB Xen VPS in LA, Chicago and Germany

QuickWeb Some “advertisers’ specials”. Roel from QuickWeb emailed me this Xen VPS offer as they have been in business for 3 years. $7/month for the following VPS:

  • 128MB memory/150MB swap
  • 5GB storage
  • 200GB/month data transfer
  • Xen/SolusVM

Here are the ordering links for Los Angeles CA (WebNX), Chicago IL (SingleHop) and Germany (Equinix). All are on 1Gbps port except for LA, which is on 100Mbps port. QuickWeb’s Xen packages are probably far from “bargains”, however they have been rock solid (for me at least) and have been voted one of the two 3 providers here over the last 2 quarters.

(Disclaimer: LowEndBox.com is hosted on a Xen VPS in Dallas TX, sponsored by QuickWeb)

          $ free
total used free shared buffers cached
          Mem: 81920 80240 1680 0 424 16852
          -/+ buffers/cache: 62964 18956
          Swap: 131064 20144 110920

I would prefer no swap is used, but this WordPress 3 crap is really chewing up memory…

        • I forget and I think we discussed this previously. Are you running a caching plugin?

          May 10, 2011 @ 2:29 am | Reply
        • @drmike — nope. Maybe I should. Every page is dynamically generated for now. LowEndBox is not a high traffic site anyway with very simple design so I’m not really worrying about it.

        • My 80mb KVM VPS running CentOS did not swap that bad when I had it, and I had a 2-3 php processes and eAccelerator installed. ( think I had memcached running too, not 100% sure)

        • We still have about 300 wpmu sites and use wp-super-cache and memcache. Just in half mode though to put the common data into memory. Going full mode and keeping fully generated pages is just a waste of hard drive space.

I got an 80RAM at QuickWeb, too. Host with LNMP and only one WordPress with no IP or PV, but almost can not run.

    • I think at $6.95 or 59/yr it is still one of the cheapest XEN offer here, also this is sustainable… you know what happened to those hosts who offer unbelievable prices they don’t last long and most ended in dead pool.

      • You are certainly right. Cheap price can notlast long.

Quickweb is the best and most stable lowendbox provider out there. No downtime since I ordered it(it was maybe a half year back from now).

    • yup here’s one of our XEN node’s uptime: http://i51.tinypic.com/so5lc2.png (we use ksplice to patch the kernel so no unecessary rebooting here!)

      May 10, 2011 @ 8:32 am | Reply
    • I reboot once a week so I can’t post mine. They had a couple of reboots way back when but nothing I haven’t seen since.

      13:07:16 up 8 days, 16:02, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

It’s one of the 256megs in Germany though. Not sure if they’re the same boxes or not as this offer.

      • we have many XEN nodes, of course 5% of those can encounter problem in a year as machine/parts can fail hence it will be fixed and brought up ASAP which is part of hardware upkeep. We also rebooted several machines several months ago to support pygrub templates which is not supported by stock xen version that comes with solusVM installer.

This current offer mostly goes to new machines and new locations in the US (LA and SingleHop in Chicago), unless there’s available slots on other nodes.

There’s only one thing that time and time again stops me from signing up for a Quickweb LEB … the 5GB of storage. It’s probably psychological but 5GB just feels claustrophobic – probably down to the phone in my pocket having over 3 times as much storage :)

    • Hi, most people use this for VPN/SSH tunnel so disk space is not much issue to them though extra 5Gb disk space is available for extra fee if you need it.

Also i would like to tell everyone that we have plenty of OS templates (standard and pygrub 32/64 bit) including the new Ubuntu 11.10 and Debian 6.0, some with built-in webmin/ispconfig ang GUI desktop.

      Thanks!

I got a box with Quickweb in Dallas… Box itself is really quick and no complaints! Got some really low numbers to cachefly though (anywhere from 440 K/s to 8M/s) — usually around 4M/s…

Contacted support and they were really on the ball, and spent a lot of time troubleshooting it with me, and explaining everything in detail… Although there is still something between the Dallas DC and cachefly, I have to give two thumbs up for their support… We determined this slowdown was primarily only with cachefly — they even gave me a different VPS to try out. Moral of the story, don’t just benchmark with Cachefly if you are in the Dallas DC!

Not my cheapest box, but definitely the best support team out there that I’ve experienced.

Giving them a try after lunch.

The uptime is excellent. My OVZ box in Germany has been up since I got it. It had some IO wait problems which went away in the first couple of days.

  17. I ordered a VPS from Quickweb who’s IP was previously used in a phishing scam. They asked me to investigate, and I replied that the log they referred me to indicated a date before my VPS was provisioned. My VPS is a fresh installation, and shows no signs of a breach.

I hear nothing back from them, and now my VPS is suspended. Avoid this provider, they have unresponsive customer service, and will suspend you based on old, irrelevant abuse reports.

Weird, I don’t think I’ve ever heard the words “Quickweb” and “unresponsive customer service” together!

Maybe ask them to clarify what’s going on and ask them to look into it more…

    • Hello,

Let me know if you have any ticket number where you contacted us about it, obviously we take phishing scam seriously and we need to comply to the Datacenter’s abuse department otherwise the whole node can get suspended and affect other client, if you think there is a mistake here please contact me and i will rectify it for you quickly.

      regards,
      Roel

      • Hi Roel,

Thank you for looking into this. It looks like my replies to tickets are disappearing while new emails can get through. Have you still not received any response from me other than my initial emails?

        • Hi Jesse,

I think we already finally managed to catch on ticket and your issue was resolved :) you can also email me directly in the future for emergency matter.

          regards,
          Roel

      • I mean no disrespect to the folks here but I’m beginning to think “GIVE A TICKET NUMBER” in 96 point flashing text should be place right below where it says “Leave a Reply” over the comment field.

To me, it’s just common sense and I’m rather surprised that it seems to always be lacking around here.
