LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

SemoWeb - $12/Year 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Orlando, FL

SemoWebDustin from SemoWeb (also known as “that sales guy” from QuadraNet with an “opportunity cost”) has sent in an exclusive, time limited offer for LowEndBox readers.

  • 256MB RAM
  • 15GB Hard Disk
  • 300GB Bandwidth
  • 4x CPU Cores
  • 1x IPv4 Address
  • 100Mbps Connection
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • $12/Year, $24/2Years (Direct Signup)

So did LowEndBox just break another yearly price barrier? It really seems we are moving away from $15/Year being the standard price point for yearly 128’s, with reputable hosts now offering them at $12. However Dustin has decided to do a limited time offer for 256MB dedicated RAM at $12/Year. It has been nearly a year since Semoweb was last posted, Dustin the man behind Semoweb is also known as the “Sales Guy” from QuadraNet. However he had has operated Semoweb for for a number of years before taking up his role there and hence this offer is run out of HostDime.

The nodes are Semoweb E3-1230’s, with some running E3-1230V2’s, it’s just a bit of a gamble which one you land on. Tun/Tap is available upon request, what struck me a bit however was RNDS setup upon request. I’m guessing that means no RDNS in SolusVM, come on Dustin it’s not 1998 anymore move it along, that could be an “Opportunity Cost” for some people.

Semoweb’s first offer was back in October 2010, and they existed for a couple of years before they first made it to LowEndBox. This looks like a seriously good offer compared to some that have come through recently, let us know your feedback.

    Hello,

I have a few VPS with you already, and the uptime is good. Just network issues sometimes, that’s the main problem, hope you can fix it on the old nodes.

    Kind Regards.

Just ordered one and reinstalled the debian 6 32 bit minimal.
But I have a noob question here: why it shows 40M ram used with the minimal version?
Haven’t installed anything yet. I tried reboot but doesn’t help.

I got the same thing. I installed Debian 5, and the memory was around 12mb. It was similar for centos. I think it’s the template.

With debian 5, everything pretty much worked. however, there weren’t many repos so they need to be added. I tried to install git and fail2ban and got a “no package found” message.

I am trying debian 6 now.

    • Hi Asim!

Great catch, our IP pricing is A LOT less due to the large amount of services we have with HostDime , we can get really really aggressive due to our relationship with HostDime, this allows us to pass the savings to you ;)

Setup was about 10 minutes for me with paypal via 2checkout. RDNS via ticket was done in a couple minutes.
Performance is fine for now, dd gives 60-80MB/s and cachefly 100mb at 7MB/s. Looks really nice for the price.

And something funny, a part from my traceroute to my VPS is good for some nostalgia:

    • Hello,

The only way your order/payment is still pending even though it shows that it was sent (from your end) to us via PayPal is because our payment processor 2CheckOut found discrepancies in the information you provided and now needs to manually review it and give the final yay or nay..

We have sold over 270 of these packages already and I can assure you we run a ethical business, please allow me to remind you if you cannot wait I either suggest opening a ticket with 2Checkout requesting an update or even with us requesting a refund.

Bottom line we want you happy, just open a billing ticket letting us know how you wish to proceed.

Looks like they face some issues there. Ordered one yesterday, invioce status paid instantly after CC checkout, service still “pending” after 18 hours and since 3 hours no reaction to my ticket except “forwarding to supervisor”.

    Well, let’s see what happens.

    • Hi Bernd,

Please see above, you may also be facing the same issue, please open a billing ticket with us and we can help review where your order is stuck at.

      Thank you.

      • Bernd:

        Thanks for the tip, Dustin.

I don’t think I’m facing the same issue as riza does. My CC (not Paypal, too expensive for foreign curreny) payment was successful and payment status on your system is “paid” since short after ordering. Only the service is in “pending” state, that’s why I opened the ticket. But I will give it a try and open a billing ticket as well. Maybe I have just missed some detail on my end.

I applied for that, when I install almost every OS, sometimes it’s offline and sometimes online but not accessible even ping; using centos 5.x or ubuntu minimal it works but even apache2 could’nt start, am I missing something ?

PS: when apache couldn’t start RAM used = 2…3 % it is not a RAM issue.

Like any large provider you will always get a mix of bad/good reviews, and to be honest it will be more bad than good its the nature of any business (people tend to say the bad and rarely respond with the good things).

  46. I read a lot of bad things about Semoweb, but most of the bad things seemed to have happened around a year ago.

From what I can tell from my use of Semoweb over the past couple of days they have been pretty good. Performance is good, pricing is amazing, and support is decent. Not a bad host, at least during the past few days.

I had a rough time initially, the OS images set up seemed a little flaky.

    100% uptime so far.

    Fingers crossed :)

I am using ubuntu 10.04, a fresh install take only 1% of ram, I tried Centos too, but as you say it takes more even alone.
I think also lighttpd is better than apache 2 with this amount of ram. once I install mysql-server (memory used 70%)

but lightpd+ php + pptpd + openvpn = 15% or less; you can try top command to see what’s running there.

Ubuntu 10.04 64-BIT (Minimal), Idles at between 5% and 10% without any extra packages.

        Nginx + PHP5 alongside Citadel/Webcit pushes it towards 30%.

Also, configuring your Web and Mail servers correctly helps.

        Trial and Error :)

        Hope this helps.
