    • Asim,

You can check out demo-ovz.chicagovps.net or demo-xen.chicagovps.net. Both are setup on their respective platforms and have the same files and configuration. You can ping and tracert both of them and also test with 50mb, 100mb, and 150mb files.

      Regards,

      Chris

    • dspace:

Yeah, uptime has been good for me too. 31 days so far, and that only because of a DDOS on my node, otherwise it would be 49 days, which is the last time I reinstalled my OS.

I’m glad there aren’t any trolls in this thread in like some of the past ones, because I’ve been hosted by them for 6 months and the experience has been excellent. I could throw stats too, but I think others have covered it.

My opinion by now is moot since everyone has pretty much said it by now, but I AM ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER. These deals are too good to be true, except it is. Every part of the VPS is extremely generous for less than $7, and I’m even able to host a small Minecraft server on it without any problems. Everyone better act on this quickly, because it’s too good to pass up.

    • Carter:

      *quote from support ticket*
We are working on IPv6 support. We are ready but our upstream is not quite there yet, so we are waiting on deployment.
I would fully expect for them to be IPv6 compliant and ready in about 6 months(very late deployment i know).
We are working with them on the intricacies and getting them all outfitted to support it as best as possible.

of Professional plan please? How is your policy about CPU usage?

          June 25, 2011 @ 6:57 am
        • @Yomero,

Everyone shares 4 threads on the OpenVZ package. Since you already know about the processors that should tell you everything you need to know.

Regarding CPU policy. I am fine with everything up to a point, but once it starts becoming service impacting for the node customers, we suspended and work with you on the VPS. If it still becomes an issue, we suspend the VPS and terminate it at the end of the term without refund.

          Thanks,

          Jeremiah

I`m ChicagoVPS customer for about 6 months.
    Using 64bit Gentoo under Xen.

But last 2-3 months there are no issues so far except slow I/O.

    • Nao,

As i am sure you know via the support tickets, but we are actually working on upgrading most of our old Xen Nodes. We have decided to move off of some of the older model processors we are on and onto all x3450’s, Dual E5520’s, and Dual E5620’s. At the beginning we did a lot of things wrong, now we are making up for it by upgrading all of our nodes, migrating people, and getting everything back to the way it should be. As such we have implemented better RAID systems, better Off-Load systems, and better Backup Systems. We are even working on bettering ourselves with our networking with our upstream.

As a few people know through support tickets, I sleep when i have 0 tickets in my queue, all of my servers are running right on par, and everyone is happy. If it was not for Chris working on sales and billing and myself and Luc working on support we would have ended up in the dead pool, yet here we are, working harder than ever, planning upgrades, working on upgrades, working on software tweaks throughout the night, trying to make your experience at ChicagoVPS the best one possible.

Thank you LEA for LEB and LET. It has given us the chance to shine!

Now on to the better part, Xen is making a come back at ChicagoVPS since we are powering up more nodes every couple of weeks. We (like Chris said above) are working on new locations. As soon as we get enough stock and availability in Chicago, we are immediately expanding to Seattle and Dallas so that we can service more people!

Questions? You can contact me directly at jshinkle chicagovps net, you can follow us on twitter @ChicagoVPS, and you can follow us on facebook.

      Thanks,

      Jeremiah

      • Regardless of good or bad company, no company will publish bad reviews about themselves.

Now, thts where third-party websites like WebHostingTalk and LEB comes in so that people can search and find unbiased (to much extent) reviews

        • Birdian, This is a provider thread, You should not hijack this with a unrelated discussion about business-basics especially since you are not even their customer. Lets move this over to http://www.lowendtalk.com shall we?

Absolutely we have had people tell us our service sucks, bad customer support, horrible this or horrible that. We try everything we can to make it right with the customer. I have had people complain that automation was bogged down with new orders and it took 3 minutes for their VPS to be setup. If someone wants to comment with their experience, more power to them. I am not going to sit here and bash them for it. I expect someone to tell us what we did wrong, and what we need to fix, for future clients, even though we may not be able to keep them as a customer.

          Thanks,

          Jeremiah

  18. Birdian:

No, actually I want to know why ChicagoVPS wouldn’t post bad reviews.

    June 26, 2011 @ 3:38 pm
    • Birdian,

I think Asim hit it on the head, testimonials are supposed to be good. Sites like LowEndTalk and WebHostingTalk are where people can discuss their experiences. However; I think if you go back and read all the things people have said about us you can see that I really am not worried about a “bad” review.

We provide a great service, and I will stand behind that. I am done with this topic now. If you are so concerned about it open a thread on LowEndTalk like Asim suggested.

      Regards,

      Chris

Your ticket was updated on BuffaloVPS. As such, blatantly lying does us no good. Next, you were notified that your VPS would be migrated, because the node that you were on, was or is acting up. We addressed the problem and migrated everyone. Everyones VPS pings and is responsive to SSH.

      Thanks,

      Jeremiah

  22. Jordan:

Eric, I’m having a similar experience as you. I signed up on Jun 12 and have had a pretty bad experience thus far. Not only does my VPS have serious I/O issues, the support staff seems to have quite a snobbish attitude towards their customers. I asked for more IPs and was told it would be $2/mo per IP, even though the price was listed lower on their site (http://buffalovps.com/openvz.html). When I told them that most other hosts charge $0.50 – $1.50, Chris responded and said he could do $1/ip one time as a favor. I politely responded and requested a refund stating that I did not want to pay $2/mo if for some reason I required more IPs in the future (I had not used the VPS at this point).

They replied and said it didn’t matter that the VPS was unused, no refund would be given and it would be cancelled at the end of the term. I told them I appreciated the one-time price match, but $2/ip is high compared to most other providers on LEB. This is the response I got from Chris:
“Even thought I don’t care about what other hosts are offering, since I know our product is much better, the point is our IPv4 is getting very low. We will give you $1/ip for as long as you have an account.”

Now, the attitude in this response bothered me, but I chose to ignore it since said he’d charge $1/ip for my account. I then finished setting up my box. That’s when I noticed the very slow I/O performance (6-8MB/sec dd tests). I figured this might be from the influx of new customers onto the node from LEB, so I waited a few days. Didn’t get any better so I contacted them through their Live Chat. They told me they were aware of the problem and were in the process of transferring people off the node. I guess I wasn’t one of them and the migrations didn’t seem to help as the I/O was still bad. A few days later support agent “Luc” told me to make a ticket with some dd results and a request to be moved to a new node:

    dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 conv=fdatasync && rm test
    512+0 records in
    512+0 records out
    33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 3.89892 s, 8.6 MB/s

    dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=512 conv=fdatasync && rm test
    512+0 records in
    512+0 records out
    33554432 bytes (34 MB) copied, 2.65354 s, 12.6 MB/s

    Chris responded the next day:
“I will take a look for you, we will not move anyone until we actually take a look at what the problem is, as there are no other complaints.”

No other complaints yet their staff admitted to me they were migrating many people off the node. Oh well, at least he was going to take a look and see the obvious I/O issues. After 7 days had passed and no response, I grew tired of waiting and went on their Live Chat. Chris answered it and I told him that nothing had been fixed. He told me he couldn’t help and that I needed to make a ticket. I reminded him that HE responded to my last one 7 days earlier and said he’d look into it. I asked him if 7 days was acceptable for a response time and he conceded that it wasn’t, and reassured me that my ticket would be responded to.

A few minutes later I received a reply from Luc:
“Your VPS looks fine after running couple days of testing, I do not see any problems with resources or speed.”

    Here was my response:
“At this moment it’s fine (I’m assuming your ‘days’ of checking was really just a single dd test just now). The problem is the instability of the node. Many times throughout the day I/O goes to crap, and goes as low as 6-7MB per second. Even doing something as simple as “ls” takes seconds to complete. But no problem I’ll just send in a screencast the next time this happens.”

So the next time it acted up (12MB/s) I recorded a screencast and sent it in. Of course, I didn’t receive a response to my ticket. Although, today they sent any e-mail to me “ChicagoVPS has notified us that they are migrating customers off of Chicago VPS15 due to some major complications with it. They will be migrating at 5PM EST.” Looks like they finally did some testing instead of just essentially calling me a liar.

8 hours later it looks like my VPS was moved to VPS14, and now the performance is worse:

    dd bs=1M count=16 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync && rm test
    16+0 records in
    16+0 records out
    16777216 bytes (17 MB) copied, 1.00844 s, 16.6 MB/s

    dd bs=1M count=16 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync && rm test
    16+0 records in
    16+0 records out
    16777216 bytes (17 MB) copied, 1.49941 s, 11.2 MB/

    dd bs=1M count=16 if=/dev/zero of=test conv=fdatasync && rm test
    16+0 records in
    16+0 records out
    16777216 bytes (17 MB) copied, 3.36375 s, 5.0 MB/s

    dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=2048 conv=fdatasync
    2048+0 records in
    2048+0 records out
    134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 11.7651 s, 11.4 MB/s

Could be because they are still moving people to the new node, I guess I just have no choice but to wait and see. I feel as though I deserve a refund as my box has pretty much been unusable due to these issues. Of course, I won’t get one. Instead I’m sure I will be attacked by the staff and accused of being a liar, etc, as seems the typical M.O. when customers say things they don’t want to hear. It’s really a shame as the $6.50/mo price point for 1GB is great. I guess it’s true what they say about things that seem too good to be true.

    • Jordan,

I did not call you a liar, the fact is that we really could not move you because we did not have room and was waiting on a new node.

Yes our IP price has gone up because our IPv4 is VERY VERY low, and is costing us. Just because other hosts charge $1 less, doesn’t mean I have to. We Provide IP’s at cost, we are not hear to lose money.

If you really want a refund, Ill give it open a ticket and you shall be granted. I also was not being snobbish to you, I was just trying to talk with many different people and many tickets at once. I will take my time for now on to make sure I do not come off that way.

Sorry your experience was not better, but I guess we cant make all 800+ customers happy.

      Regards,

      Chris

        WRONG answer

No one cares how many customers you have packed on your servers, we care how you TREAT those customers. You should strive to make every customer happy if you want to be successful…

        Try revising to something like:
“Sorry your experience was not better, but we’ll work hard to fix problems like these in the future”

        July 10, 2011 @ 11:47 am
        • Klive,

The point is not that we don’t treat our customers good, we have been trying to fix the issue for the future and have said this, but some people still do not find this satisfactory so yes it did make me a little frustrated.

You can go back and look at reviews at any post on LowEndBox and find that 99% of comments are all good. The only reason some are bad in this thread is because 1 of our 14 nodes is having a problem, so of course some of our clients are going to complain. As for the box being overloaded, this is also false. The node is the exact same as all the others with less users and resources being used, yet its performance is bad. We are really trying to fix this issue.

I am pretty sure I made Jordan happy by giving a refund, we are not here to take peoples money and not give them a great service. I really wish the bashing would stop because it is not needed and there is only so much we can do.

          Regards,

          Chris

    • Adam:

@Jordan, yes the Node VPS15 was defunct. I reported the error a day or two after I signed up.

Since then I was moved onto VPS16 (took 1 week due to hardware delivery delays). For the first 4 hours that the server was up, I was getting 80mb/s from IO tests, but later on the problem started again and is still persistent.

While I do not know the technical details (would be nice to know), I can comment that for the error to still persist after put on new hardware, one of the likely would seem to be the cause (my opinion):

      – Server is overloaded to the point where HDD’s write/read speed are being pushed to the limits.
      – One or a few users are constantly hammering the server.
      – The Virtualization (OpenVZ) has a leak, or something wrong with it…

Yes I do agree that it is annoying to have the server/s screw up and it’s an inconvenience for us users, but you also have to think of Chris who has to find out what this problem along with all the customers complaining.
While I can’t say I’ve enjoyed my service so far, I have however been offered 1 month free and I intend to ride this out.

Below are my support logs showing proof of the above:

        Adam,
I expect a level of courtesy and respect from anyone I give my money to for a service. I also expect the service I’m paying for to be delivered satisfactorily. The irony is that they accused a user here of “blatantly lying” when your post just proves they were in fact the ones doing so. If you were indeed on VPS15 as well Jeremiah tells you on June 30th that you are the only user having I/O issues. I had been complaining of these problems well before this, and was not surprisingly fed the same line.

@ChicagoVPS please take note: comments like these are NOT helpful especially when they are not true. Instead of defensive remarks such as these try focusing on possible solutions, even if they are the only user experiencing problems (which we clearly weren’t in this case).

Now, thankfully they did provide me with a refund. They haven’t pulled the plug on my VPS yet so I just went in to do a few more dd tests and still getting only ~7MB/sec. If they fix these issues (most likely overselling) and work on their support I’ll consider signing up again, but for now I’m just glad I got out with my only loss being the time I spent setting up the box.

And @Chris RE: the IP pricing. Yes you are absolutely free to charge whatever you want for IPs. My gripe was that your website (http://buffalovps.com/openvz.html) shows different pricing and when you informed me of the higher price I requested a refund you said no. I had not used the VPS or any bandwidth so that’s not an excuse. Bait-and-switching new customers is not a very good way to gain respect for your company.

      • From that support ticket seems like they are trying their best – However slow response times are a worry.

  24. Unhappy ChicagoVPS Customer:

I have been a Chicago VPS customer for almost 6 months. My box has gone offline an average of once a week.

I also concur with others that Chris is a pompous, curt, inconsiderate asshole. Never in my life have I had a “CEO” respond to me with something like “none of our other customers are complaining”, or, be asked to provide a traceroute that shows the host node offline while pretending not to have any idea why my server is offline.

Run your own traceroute, or better yet, maybe you can take some of the profits from your astounding 800+ customers and invest into a monitoring system so you don’t have to ask your customers to do your dirty work.

    Stay away from Chicago VPS!!!!

P.S. ~ When they say your server is down because of a DDoS attack, they really mean they are currently trying to recover from one of their staff’s incompetent actions.

    • Whoever you are,

Most of your statements are false, however you can think what you want.

I have no need to fuel your fire of false accusations.

    • Not true, I’m a client (have 3 VPSes with ChicagoVPS) and had been very happy. Of course there were issues sometimes, but everytime I open up a ticket, they fix it and let me know the cause of the issues, ASAP.
