ChicagoVPS has been around for a while; the domain was registered in 2010. They are know for they big bang-for-buck offers and were one of the first hosts to come with the 2GB for $7/month VPS. ChicagoVPS is using host nodes with dual CPUs and Intel 520 SSDs for their SSD-based OpenVZ offers. Orders will be set up instantly, so you can get started right after ordering! ChicagoVPS has recently sold 123Systems to VSNX (the owner of LowEndBox and LowEndTalk) in order to focus on ChicagoVPS and the customers merged from the ElectricByte acquisition. That may have been a good move, as customers have been critical of ChicagoVPS’ support over the past month or so. Hopefully this renewed focus will do them good! If you sign up, or are already a customer, feel free to leave a review in the comments or at LowEndTalk.com.

ChicagoVPS accepts payments via major Credit Cards, by personal check, cashier’s check, PayPal, electronic check, or money order. Their refunds policy states that “Refunds are subject to approval by ChicagoVPS on a case by case basis”. ChicagoVPS guarantees a 99.9% uptime with all services. Free central backups, free automated weekly node backups and free DNS hosting are all included. For more information, take a look at their Terms of Service.

  5. Ex-CVPS customer:

CVPS had an awesome BF deal. Hope they’ll bring it back for Cyber Monday.

I still don’t understand why CVPS does not have a looking glass or speed test file for each location. Surely they are big enough to do so. Can we assume that the colocrossing looking glass in the same location have identical performance and, if so, why doesn’t CVPS simply point to them?

  9. Uber:

Stay away, what people say is true, my vps go down always!, you won’t get what they promise… just some months and then you’ll be here telling people to stay away.
I don’t even know why they are being announced here.

Avoid these guys. I’ve had multiple VPS’s through CVPS, I experienced several data losses when suddenly my box was wiped and they mysteriously couldn’t find the central backups. They changed my IP without telling me, and gave me one that was on spam blacklists. Console access through their website doesn’t work, and they know it. Opened up at least 4 tickets to enable Tun/Tap as it kept reverting back.

I accidently forgot to cancel my subscription last year, so just stuck with them for one more year. Cancelled a week in advance, but didn’t realize that they would issue another invoice and have paypal autopay them. So, I just paid them for another year, I have no account, and when I contacted them for a refund, they told me to open a dispute with paypal. I’ve since done that, and they have not even bothered to respond to it. I will NEVER deal with these guys again.

    Hello guys,
if the owner/founder of this website is crystal then just avoid this service i have 1 year of service vps and i used it only for 13 days and 5-10hrs downtime per day and i was fed up and i asked for refund as there is 30 days money back and the reply was i will not get refund as i violate their TOS by “SPEAKING VERY RUDE TO THEIR STAFF TEAM” and yes i spoke in rude way as i lost my users because of data lose and downtime and not at all worthy and the vps was left out without using and i changed my services and used it for ddosing ;) :P as i got no refund. Think and make clear before making a purchase.
IAM NOT SURE IF THIS VPS IS THE ONE I TRIED (IT WAS BEFORE 1 YEAR, BUT I REMEMBER THE NAMED “CRYSTAL”)

I recommend these guys even though my servers have had their data wiped, at the end of the day your responsible for yourself and your shit so dont point the finger somewhere else, back up your stuff manually or set automated backing up to another server.

  14. Atomicslave:

These guys are what they are bang for your buck, I would not host any enterprise things here but for personal stuff is fine.

I have been a customer for 2 years some issues are Nodes Dropping offline randomly, VPS randomly just gets turned off, Lag issues in Buffalo in the evening sometimes. However it is what it is and for the price I will likely keep renewing.

    December 17, 2014 @ 8:31 pm
  15. BDWEB IT Their service is good.

    December 21, 2014 @ 7:48 pm
  16. E.T.Cook:

I agree with the other replies – you get what you pay for. Do not spend money thinking you’re getting anywhere near critical availability. Your VPS will go offline for hours at a time – you won’t ever get notified, their network status page will never be updated, and the staff will utterly refuse to let you know what is going on.

Do NOT host anything on here that is in any way meaningful or important to you. It WILL go down, and the most you will EVER get from the staff are one line responses. You will never receive a satisfactory answer…ever…you can’t drag it out of them.

    December 30, 2014 @ 4:33 am
  17. Karel:

All the negative remarks about chicagovps are true. Just can add that there is a totally incapable staff, but they call themselves support Gurus. Response messages are done in a hurry so they are not reading your tickets, the answers are totally bullshit. I even suspect they have some automated response bot. Then they brick your VPS resulting in a 8 days downtime. No communication in the meantime, just to stand by. For a Level 1 support ticket totally unacceptable. Asking for refunds are ignored. No excuses nor compensation is offered. Just the silent treatment.
Once again stay away from chicagovps!

  18. Roger Debris:

I too wanted to post back about a very negative experience with ChicagoVPS. I signed up for a one year plan $35, paid by PayPal, thinking worst case I can dispute the charge for a pro-rated refund if the box is not up to spec, right? Despite a detailed report from my side as to why their VPS does not need their posted spec, PayPal sided with ChicagoVPS based on a one-liner response stating that “oh but it does”. I learned my lesson, I will not deal with el-cheapo companies anymore, nor will I pay by PayPal for hosting. Specifically, the issue I had with ChicagoVPS is that their “dedicated” RAM is a lie, the RAM is shared across all VPS instances and your instance has to compete for it. If your program is idle for only a short time, you have to wait for it to be swapped back in, which due to their low I/O rate can take minutes. Moved to OVH, same amount of RAM, zero problem for the same application load.

    January 5, 2015 @ 6:18 am
  19. CHRIS FABOZZI, THE OWNER OF CVPS WOULD YOU PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS TICKET!!! IT HAS BEEN TWO WEEKS NOW THAT NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. YOUR SUPPORT STAFF ARE EITHER KIDS OR JUST HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING. I HAVE MULTIPLE VPS’S WITH YOUR COMPANY AND BECAUSE OF THE TURN AROUND TIME ON GETTING ISSUES RESOLVED I’M THINKING OF JUST MOVING EVERYTHING TO ANOTHER COMPANY. I CAN SEE A COUPLE OF DAYS, BUT WHEN TWO WEEKS PASS AND THE TICKET JUST BOUNCES AROUND BECAUSE YOUR SUPPORT STAFF DON’T REALLY CARE IT MAKES IT VERY FRUSTRATING. SINCE I CAN’T GET IT RESOLVED THROUGH NORMAL PROCESSES I THOUGHT I’D COME HERE AND MAYBE YOU WOULD SEE THIS. AND YES, THE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS IS TO GET YOUR ATTENTION.

  20. Michael,

I just took a look and it looks like the license is active from what I can see. Hopefully your issues are now resolved. Also, the ticket is only 2 days old. Not sure where two weeks came from.

If you have any more concerns, please let me know and email me directly.

    January 13, 2015 @ 1:26 am
    • Of course it works now, the license just went active several hours ago from me posting this message. I went to cpanel’s verify site and the active date is:

      active on 2015-01-12 19:23:01

So apparently this wasn’t resolved until this post was seen. Also this problem started when that package was first moved from Buffalo to NJ and that was probably 2-3 tickets. If you do some investigating you’ll see that the move was about 2 weeks ago. Hey, all done, fine good.

Why is this company still offering on here? Because Jon Biloh co-owns ChicagoVPS.

How about that daily sales quota you set on ChicagoVPS Mr. Jon Biloh? Maybe it is time some DOX happen.

it is scam. i ordered by dedicated server 5 days ago and i am yet to hear anything from their support staff despite my repeated reminders.

guys please stay away from this shitty service at all costs

  25. D.Ness:

I have been a customer with ChicagoVPS for like 2-3 years now.

    PROS:
    – Dirt Cheap
    – Good Bandwidth Speeds
    – I/O is decent (not amazing, obviously but useable)
    – Chris is actually a level-headed owner. As long as you are respectful and normal.
    – Downtime is rare after the initial period after setting up a vps.
    – They don’t snoop through your data or keep tabs on you like other hosts.

    CONS:
    – Expect the unexpected (Downtime, Solus Panel or alternatives not working, etc)
    – It’s 100% unmanaged. That means backup your files, daily.
    – Response times on tickets vary from 1-4 business days (weekends omitted)

    NOTES:

When buying from ChicagoVPS, be sure to buy stuff when it’s on special (E.g: Blackfriday, Cyber Monday, Superbowl, etc) – those will be the best prices you get.

ALWAYS BACK YOUR SHIT UP. Or alternatively, use their 3$/month addon which does it for you.

Don’t flame when you open a ticket. Ok you may experience downtime, perhaps it’s your node, maybe someone ddosed another machine on the same node and the whole thing is down. If you want nothing of the sort, go for their DDoS protected VPSes that actually mitigate ddos attacks (hence the higher prices).

Did I mention to back your shit up? Do it now. While you read this. Just to be safe.

Dedicated Servers take a bit to set up. Need a server? Don’t buy it at the last minute then blame chicagovps for being “incompetent”. Patience is key, you’re paying cheap – don’t compare this to say “instant” setup hosts.

Their site ads and their actual products differ. Always test out your product to see if it’s up to par, and keep in mind that sometimes a node can be full or oversold. If this is the case, simply open a ticket and ask to be moved to a less crammed node, they will happily oblige. Didn’t do that? Don’t bitch here about it.

I am in no way affiliated with ChicagoVPS apart from being a customer, and what I read on a yearly basis about CVPS is always the same things. I haven’t ever mentioned anything up till now, but that’s because I am quite sick and tired of reading the same things day in and day out.

    Regards,
    DN.

PS: Feel free to pm me for any questions regarding their quality.
