LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

BassHost - $5.20 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Denver

BassHost Shubham “Sam” from BassHost has emailed me their LowEndBox fans exclusive VPS offers. These are OpenVZ plans with SolusVM as control panel. 2 low end plans:

  • VPS.5$3/month
  • 128MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 100GB/month data transfer
  • VPS1$5/month
  • 256MB memory
  • 25GB storage
  • 250GB/month data transfer

PayPal is the only payment method, and interestingly when you are arrive at checkout it also asks for extra 4% for “PP Tax” which I presume would be covering PayPal fee? Is this the American thing that they don’t just include that in the price and only stun you when you are at the counter?! This is why I intentionally leave out “VPS2” because you end up paying $7.28/month, and unlike VAT they don’t go straight to the government as tax.

Servers in Denver CO with FDCServers (test IP: 76.73.40.187). From their About page they seem to be a 2-men team with 4 years experience, although the domain has only been registered for a year — or 7 years according to Todd’s LinkedIn? VPS however, has only been offered for ~3 weeks according to this tweet. While they do have SSL on their checkout page, it does not work, as the Ajax script hard coded the protocol part of URL. Both NS running on the same box.

    Hey

    Thanks for posting for us.

We are a usa based company which is true and the PP tax is a payment transaction fee. Both the name servers run of the same box because we do not have many shared and reseller hosting clients. Our main clientele is made up of VPS and dedicated clients.

Also here is a quick history of basshost’s history … known as hostzune and rush-host from the past. Also we are more than a 2 men team. It is us two and our staff of four who work the night shift and also are USA based. The 2 people behind it … Shubham(sam) and Todd we both used to run our own companies individually. We both being best friends in school and college decided one day that we both should join forces and create Bass Host. We are from WVU same college Verisign’s founder and also the president and CEO of Cisco is from and we have a great education in the IT industry.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

“PP Tax” – what a bunch of nonsense. You should at least call it what it really is: a fee. Taxes are collected and paid to the government. Since when does the government levy a 4% tax on PayPal transactions? (It doesn’t.)

You have a point. Went ahead and removed it. No more PP tax. Also if you have ordered from lowendbox please contact support and they will refund your “PP tax.”

  3. I have to admit that I’m a little ticked off about the “4 years of experience” = the best web host possible. I know I’ve been doing this for well a lot longer than 4 years and I’m still learning new things nearly everyday.

They do have tits on their website though. Guess they’ve learned something as well. *sigh*

The only other place i see best web host is in customer testimonials …

I think what has happened is that when you think of “best hosting” basshost comes to your mind.

It’s not your opinion, you guarantee it. If people aren’t happy with the service, does your guarantee mean you’ll refund them with no questions, or is it hyperbolic marketing bullshit?

Also, I’m fairly sure he wouldn’t use a host that’s so obviously clueless. You don’t have different nameservers because you don’t have many customers? So the $1 a month it’d cost you to run a second, separate nameserver isn’t worth it? And the SSL problem? People see that stuff and just assume you don’t know what you’re doing.

Will you be refunding all the people you’ve committed this “PayPal tax” fraud against, or just the ones who realise what you did broke the PayPal terms and conditions?

        • *sigh* Another host that doesn’t get it.

Someone pointed out a small issue with your website. (Actually a couple of issues. Something we do a lot around here.)

You basically told that someone that they were wrong.

That someone proved you to be incorrect and gave specifics.

          You insulted them.

          Nice customer service skills.

What’s sad is that the quote in question is dead center on the front of their website, above the fold in fact, and they were unaware of it. I wonder what else they’ve not noticed or have missed. Maybe they were blinded by the tits as well.

It caught my eye too. Seemed kind of presumptuous and silly after claiming only just 4 years “experience” in the “industry”. I mean, I’m used to seeing marketing speak all over pages for hosts but that just caught my eye and seemed over the top, for some reason.

@garry If people are not happy with Bass Host’s service Bass Host will give them a refund as long as they have a cause behind it(examples server sucks, support sucks). Nameservers … we have other nameservers under a different name. A SSL certificate is not required because payment is done via paypal’s site. We have a SSL certificate on hold because we are considering to offer Google Checkout and also Credit/Debit card payments.
About the Paypal Tax I have to agree with you guys we messed up. We will credit everyone’s account with the correct amount over the next week.

@drmike I know you and the others are just pointing things out. And I am sorry if I insulted you and the others. The “best host” was not on my mind. I did not have the time to look over what you said … sorry that was my fault.

Our webhosting is awesome because other people think it is awesome. Because despite the fact that we have messed up with a couple things, We are continually working to improve our service.

Personally…. I don’t think LowEndBox is a place to trash a host. No matter who it is. I do think though that it should be used to point out some issues and to point out the good about the company.

Just because BassHost has messed up in some areas, does not mean that it is a bad host or run by people that don’t know what they are doing.

If anyone has issues with the service that we provide, then feel free to bring it to our attention. You are able to contact us using numerous methods… Those methods are where you should be directing your questions…. not trashing us on LEB just because you don’t think we are cut out for it or don’t think we know what we are doing.

    • I don’t think anyone trashes a host here unless they suddenly die in the deadpools.
I always see some very constructive critical key points for their websites and VPS loading such as Disk IO and Network problems.

However not many of those hosting companies follow the response said in LEB. In the end, many customers go unhappy. Tis what happen to ipap here.

But as I said before… If ANYONE has any concerns about our company, then please FEEL FREE to email us, open a support ticket, etc…. But please bring it to OUR attention FIRST so as to give us a chance to help satisfy your needs and requests….

There isn’t much we can do within a thread like this because there are so many people that are making complaints and accusations without giving us a chance to fix the issues.

Just contact us and we WILL help out in every way we can. Our support staff always try to help, no matter what the hosting needs. :)

Totally agree. Really tacky and sexist, and about as appropriate as a photo of a web server on the cover of FHM Magazine. One of the (numerous) reasons I despise Godaddy is because of this kind of pathetic, dated, brain-dead marketing.

It’s really easy to get ideas for a “shared hosting” image by typing the words “shared hosting” into Google images. You’ll see that no other host thought using a dolly bird showing off her rack was a good idea.

Unfortunately it actually works for many :(

I much prefer no-frills plain looking website that’s filled with correct information and relevant specification so I can understand exactly what they are selling. I often need to do quite a bit of email relays with the provider who sent me their offers — these are completely unnecessary if they can just put all the info on their website.

Coca Cola invented the marketing technique of using a beautiful girl. I guess it is more than a girl it really is a screen shot of 3 sites with a girl added to get extra attention. I honestly don’t find this sexist nor do any of my “girl” friends do.

I just wanted to display what shared hosting is in an unique way and get some attention. That is it. And we are not being sexist. We just appreciate beautiful women.

Imagine that this woman photo is in the front page, what do they put in the admin area :D

    August 15, 2011 @ 10:06 am | Reply
  7. Todd:

So what if we have a woman on the front page… It’s attractive…and it works. Plain. And. Simple.

If you have an issue with us, or the picture, then don’t use us…

Our company is not based on a woman being the centerpiece of business. We don’t stereotype women or anything like that. The picture is what it is.

And quite honestly… whether it be another “web host” or some other technology company…. there are others that use pictures MUCH worse than ours. It’s not like it’s inappropriate… There is no 18+ content on the website… there are no nude photos or advertisements like GoDaddy does (as mentioned earlier) that allude to us having “unrated” web content/videos….

We are a professional web host. We do what works. What brings in clients and profit so we can offer clients better web hosting than they have had in the past.

We have messed up with some different things. Admitted.

We are fixing everything based on user (and audience/onlooker) suggestions.

We are just trying to offer better services and support compared to some other web hosts out there that have limited support (if any at all).

We are making sure that our company stays on track for making the services we provide, even better…. every. single. day.

I’m sure if you Google other images for technology websites, you are bound to find numerous other companies throughout the world that have pictures more conservative (and MUCH LESS conservative) than our picture.

Again… it is NOT inappropriate. If you think it is tacky, then don’t go to the front page…. or just click away from it. (Captain Obvious to the rescue)

Again… don’t trash a host just because you don’t think a single image, or a few words aren’t appropriate based on your morals and ethics.

If you are offended by the images (or, for some odd reason, the word selection) then feel free to email us and let us know. But there is no need to trash us in public for something literally so small and insignificant that it does not affect you (mentally, physically, or otherwise).

It pisses me off. We have many happy clients that don’t have any issues. And most of the people on here aren’t even clients. So what I don’t get is why if they haven’t had any experience with us, then why do they have a right to trash us if they haven’t experienced our hosting services.

So to blow up. But people are really starting to piss me off with this shit.

    Wow. Did not expect this.

LEA: I agree, I also prefer sites to stick to the point and have accurate, informative content. I think for the kind of tech-savvy people who want a (usually unmanaged) VPS, most other people would agree.

Sam: I’m just giving my opinion/advice, which is to get rid such obviously sexist imagery and replace it with an image relevant to what you’re selling (clue: you’re not selling lingerie). You call it attention grabbing, I think it’s just a silly distraction that makes you look unprofessional and/or immature. If you don’t accept that advice, fair enough, it’s your site and your choice.

Todd: You’re not the first VPS representative to have a meltdown here over what people say and you won’t be the last. If you don’t like it here, take your own charming advice and “click away”. Captain Obvious is having a busy day, isn’t he?

FWIW, what I said wasn’t meant as a ‘personal’ attack on you or BassHost, I just think there’s better pics to use, but that’s been said and just my opinion. As for what other people said, probably best to take it all as advice or opinion, which it usually is, rather than attacks. Tough crowd here though. :)

I mean you have point. But, this is in no way sexist … sexist is known as gender discrimination or sex discrimination. We at Bass Host do not discriminate anyone. I think Todd got pissed because you called us out for being sexist and that is not true. We take things like this seriously and we look at and treat everyone equally.

Also it is not just a picture of a girl if you look at the image. It really is a screen shot of 3 sites with the girl being the center for attention. This does not show that we are “unprofessional and/or immature.”

Randomly got on facebook and asked a someone … “it isn’t trashy but it definitely provocative but i’ve definitely seen similar picture on a filesharing site so i dont see it as inappropriate it isn’t trashy but it definitely prococative but i’ve definitely seen similar picture on a filesharing site so i dont see it as inappropriate”

      • Jim:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not claiming the image is pornographic or any way “morally” inappropriate, I just think it’s “inappropriate” for a VPS/hosting site.

I actually thought when I first saw your site that the pic was an example website that you hosted – a lingerie site called Black Label. For which it would make perfect sense. But as it stands, it has no context and nothing to do with what you’re selling, so to me… well I just don’t get it.

Anyway that’s just me, and you should stick with what you’re happy with.

Like stated above I am sorry if I insulted you. I also know that you don’t like us and would not recommend anyone to BassHost.

Same things stated above where true and thanks for the advice. And not only did we listen to what people had to suggest we actually did that.

Also just because you have 10 years of experience does not mean anything. The advice which you had given early was great so we took care of it.

I never lied to you. I admit the fact I was wrong. And I will admit it again I was wrong and over looked it.

  12. If you are interested in considering buying from them, here is a review to take a look at:

Unfortunately I think there is an issue with their memory settings, which, at least on the VPS .5 ones, make it less useful than a box with comparable memory amount.
