BuyVM - $15/Year 128MB VPS Coming on Monday 18 April!

BuyVM “Do BuyVM have any stock?” seems to be one of the most frequently asked questions here. And behold! Pony the Almighty has spoken. Jay wrote in to point me to this announcement on FranTech:

Francisco went to bzImage and said, “Thus says The Pony, the God of Frantech, ‘Let My people go, that they may purchase VPS goodness.” But bzImage said, “Not until Monday April 18th at 12:00pm GMT-7”

New Clients: Please remember to register with accurate account details as the red sea shall not be parted for fraud.

Not too sure whether there will be 10 plagues, and the last one kills bzImage’s first born process (die, init(1) die!) but at least the date/time is clear. Monday. April 18th at lunch time. BuyVM will have stock (yes Francisco — don’t make us disappointed). Including their popular $15/year offer.

  • 128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • 1x IPv4 + lots of IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Their servers are with Hurricane Electric in Fremont CA, and BuyVM were voted the #1 in 2011 Q1 by the LowEndTalk community. Get your world clock ready if you are not in US :)

With the sale a bunch of torrent people slammed in so we’ve been having to cleanup some of the nodes and either force speed caps on people or tell them to get lost – sorry.

          Thanks,

        • Some boxes will be around the 60 – 90MB/sec range as they’re on smaller arrays (just 4 disks) while others will get 100 – 200MB/sec :)

As I said, we’re just cleaning up the last of this mess. We took the rest of our 512MB plans out of stock for now while we finish this.

        • It has been about a half dozen nodes that have been going a bit crazy. We had a fellow move in and had an lighttpd blasting away 60MB/sec constantly. It ramped up node02 pretty badly and we had to have a chat with him.

We suspended him and told him he had to cap/address it or he’d have to look elsewhere. He told us he would so we unsuspended them. 2 hours later he was back steam rolling the poor thing :P

Either way, there’s anther 6+ users we’ve had to have chats with and we’re considering a TOS/AUP adjustment to deal with these.

I am also getting “meh-grade” performance at times on 28 and 31.
So, here are some ideas for you, how to improve it ‘for free’.
          – is the host filesystem mounted with “noatime” (well I think you already do this);
          – how about setting up some test nodes with JFS or XFS instead of ext3 – those can be massively faster on certain scenarios, also cut down on fsck times by a factor of 10-100;
          – rolling out new kernels – between 2.6.27/2.6.32 and 2.6.18 there’s a whole eon in terms of kernel evolution – maybe I/O performance and ‘fairness’ will also be improved with those;

          April 24, 2011 @ 11:33 am | Reply
        • – The .32 kernels don’t have proper –cpus limiting which can end up with a single user blasting at CPU. Yes, there are cpuunits that should stop this, key word is should.

          – noatime works fine and most of our nodes are carrying that. noatime breaks some legacy systems as well as cpanel so we’re likely going to do some testing with relatime and see if it’s a good compromise.

          – XFS/JFS don’t support 2nd level quotas which countless users need for cpanel and general accounting withing their VPS’s. Our new setups are less likely to get beat up by FSCK’s.

We’re well aware of where the issue is on some of the nodes, it isn’t actual user abuse or anything. The changes have already been applied to 06, 07 & the bastard child 27. IOWait for instance has dropped down to sub 1% the majority of the time and CPU spikes have gone away because of this as well.

While it may seem that we’re off sitting on our thumbs I can assure you that my lack of presence on IRC is because i’m on a break of sorts. Right now i’d rather focus on any final changes we need to make sure everyone is performing tip/top without causing anymore headaches.

Anthony is already scheduling some quick reboots for Monday/Tuesday to address some early kernel bugs that existed in the first roll outs of pony4-1. This was fixed in many later nodes once it was more apparent where the flaw was.

On the 5420 nodes we’re going to be likely ordering them bigger RAID cards so we can make people stop asking to be ‘sent to a node that will get them 150MB/sec+ constantly to the disk’. I’m not entirely sure why people insist on being able to beatup the drives and seem saddened by their 80 – 90MB/sec on a $15/y VPS.

With that being said, thanks for the additional ideas. Depending on how things go we’ll likely roll relatime out in the coming few days. Depending on when Anthony schedules the work he wants to get done we’ll reload some of the last stock we got on hand and I’ll arrange with Matt the last of the 128MB nodes :)

May the pony be with you,

        • I probably should clarify a bit more. Users on the L5420’s didn’t really have much in the way of user abuse, we actually had way more on the 5520’s. Nodes 06, 07, 27 and a few others (30, 31?) are hardware related and will be addressed pretty quick.

We did have an interesting case on node02 the other day where a user went torrenting a bluray rip of some super popular movie series and left it in a crawlable folder. Within about 4 hours he was ripping out a good 60MB/sec and got to have a nice chat with Aldryic & Anthony about ‘resource abuse’. Since then the client cleaned up his act and may have landed himself a speed cap even.

These large sales rounds do draw in abuse at times but we’re generally quite quick at catching it or spotting it before it even gets provisioned. Cases do slip by, it’s hard to do full checks on around 600 orders in a few days.

Either way, it’ll be fixed up :)

I had the chance to pick even 100 of their VPSs, at the time they started! And it was the time I was hardly researching a VPS too. But I did one prediction of my ultra-genius predictions, that guided me to believe their service isn’t going to be fine. It’s indeed sad, seeing some companies which I predicted good future for them proved fail service, and are no exist now.

      April 18, 2011 @ 3:47 am | Reply
      • The sad part is that for many people we’re a far more stable version of the ‘stock market’ :)

There was a few people that picked up a half dozen this last round just to resell them at a much higher price (at least $10 profit off each for just being awake to snag it).

  8. We’ll have something like 200 – 300 128’s this round as well as a bunch of other stock.

With the reorganizing and performing tuning we’ve been working at we have been able to re-purpose a lot of gear. This may very well be the last sales round we do for this year, it really depends how exhausted we are :)

Since our last sales round we did get ipv6 RDNS in place for those interested in that.

Thanks for the quick posting LEA!

    • Usually we require people stay on the same payment periods due to WHMCS being annoying.

      Eg.

      – You buy a $15/y
      – later you want a 256MB which is $35.90/year
      – You’ll have to pay around $20 as a pro-rate for the rest of your year.

Should you happen to see a `Down for Maintenance` message on the site, don’t panic! We’ve merely disabled public access temporarily so that we can process orders and make sure everything’s working as it should. If you get that message, just check back at the next 15 minute interval (xx:00, xx:15, xx:30, xx:45).

Really rm. Stock was delayed until all current customers were fixed up. New clients/vpses are put on whatever nodes have slots available, and it’s likely to see “some” slow down whilst all the people decide it’s a “good idea” idea to run massive amounts of benchmarks on a VPS. There was a recent SolusVM issue which is likely the cause for the incorrect node numbers. Why would FT suddenly migrate people from ~30 nodes to 1?

      Anyways…

Sorry for sounding negative — but the most frustrating part for me was that the slow I/O (?) is somehow making Lighttpd “give up” on page generation, and it was just throwing “500 Internal Server Error” on all requests.
Then I see nodes renamed in Solus (and both VPSes shown offline), then a login takes minutes because I/O is so slow, then unable to join #frantech to ask what’s going on (it was +i, invite-only), then no one of the staff is actually on the channel.
So I feel generally left in the dark a bit. :/

        • I apologize as I said RM.

node28 took a dive into swap for no reason even though the node had well over 50% of its RAM spare so you get a combo of that with users provisioning and you got a painful IO mix there.

We’ve been turning off swap on more and more of our nodes these days as these boxes have NO reason to even be in it (99% of our nodes are almost always at around ~50% RAM usage).

It’ll be back to normal once my ‘get out of swap’ scripts are done. I apologize if you’ve been getting ignored at all, but we literally got the roof ripped off the place :/

      April 19, 2011 @ 1:57 am | Reply
      • dd:

Hardly, It uses more RAM ONLY where pointers are involved. It is also faster than 32 bit because:

        1. It does 64 bit integer math in hardware which is 1000 times faster than doing it in software. This is very useful for https as SSL encryption depends on 64 bit math.
        2. It has lot more general purpose registers so more data is kept around in registers by the compiler so it is faster.
        3. Its general purpose registers are 64 bit wide so more data is kept around in registers by the compiler so it is faster.

It can cause cache miss only for pointer data which will jump around in memory anyway as pointers can point anywhere. For all other data there will be no extra cache use.

I use 64 bit on all my VPS except where VPS providers believe the myth that 64 bit uses double memory than 32 bit and don’t provide 64 bit templates at all. 64 bit usually uses about 10% more memory than 32 bit but that hardly counts these days. In return your VPS will perform significantly faster than 32 bit.

        April 19, 2011 @ 2:29 am | Reply
    • cd is correct, the 64bit templates use double the RAM in OVZ. Since we’ve had so many complaints, and even payment disputes, from people claiming we were ripping them off, we have disabled 64bit templates completely for the time being.

        • rm:

It is a terrible decision to remove 64-bit templates.
A user PAYS for his allocation of the RAM resource. It should be completely his call, how he/she uses it. If some prefer a bit larger RAM footprint (and it’s nowhere near 2x) to gain improved performance in SSL and the like (see comment by dd above) then you should allow them this choice.

          April 19, 2011 @ 11:19 am | Reply
        • @rm – 64bit is possible just for 99% of our users they don’t need it.

If you have a need for it you’re more than welcome to log a ticket and have it installed for no additional cost :) We get many users that will install cPanel or different applications and then log a ticket calling us a scam because a ton of RAM disappeared. A swap to 32bit and they were fine.

Is this perfect for everyone? No but we do leave the option open for those that want it. We don’t list the templates by default, though, because people will run into a configuration error on their part and rush off reinstalling to 64bit thinking that will fix it. THEN rush back to complain to us.

We’re simply cutting our own ticket volume down with it :)

          YMMV.

          If you see: http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/wordpress-cheap-vps-lowendscript/
64 bit uses only 39% more.

To scare up some numbers for my own VPS, I just ran these and was surprised to find that 64 bit does not use 1M more than 32 bit.

For 32 bit VPS at dallas:

          Also in this script:

          http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/wordpress-cheap-vps-lowendscript/

In the 64 bit stack cron is running but it is not running in the 32 bit stack, so if you subtract that the 64 bit uses 35% extra I think.

“to gain improved performance in SSL and the like”

Not only for SSL, the most commonly used functions like memcpy, memset and memcmp all are faster on 64 bit.

On 64 bit we have the movsq, stosq, cmpsq commands that move, zero and compare 8 bytes at a time whereas on 32 bit movsd, stosd, cmpsd operate on 4 bytes at a time. So any program that copies, zeros and sorts (compares) memory (that probably includes every program out there) is faster in 64 bit.

This is seriously disappointing. I’ve been waiting for two rounds of stock to be able to get another vps with buyvm, but it seems it’s not meant to happen. I had a 512 in my cart and when I clicked submit, the website was down for maintenance and then the stock was gone (I understand they removed it to work through the ones bought, but I was in the middle of submitting it -_-). It’s now 8-9 hours later and no stock has been added back. While this wouldn’t normally be an issue, I have work and class and am not able to stay up refreshing their page in the hopes that stock shows up. They have given no idea except “soon” which can be taken to mean anywhere from 1 minute to the 9+ hours it has been. They have also not given any specifics about the “second wave” that is meant for those residing in Asia.

Just to be clear, this has nothing to do with their service, as it is fantastic (the one I actually managed to get), but the fact that this round of stock was only open for merely a few minutes.

All that waiting for nothing. I really wanted to get one to see what all the hype is about, and to finally get a West Coast VPS.

Can LEA add stock availability as a criteria when conducting a top provider survey?

At 10:30PM PDT there are 130 more units of 128s. Stock doesn’t break the fact that BuyVM is an awesome provider. Sorry.

      • jojit:

I’m not saying that BuyVM is bad, I’m just saying that stock availability should be considered when voting. Why would you promote something if people cannot get it?

Correction, people can get it for about 3 minutes every two months.

Anyway, no need for people here to react. I’m just venting. I’m allowed to do that am I?

        April 19, 2011 @ 5:18 am | Reply
        • I believe BuyVM already owns all their equipment on the rack and are deploying probably a lot more VPS than many other shops featured here. Having no stock does not mean that they don’t have sizable setup — it just means they are containing their growth.

So would you prefer a company that *always* have stock, because (1) they lease new servers from random places (2) they are happy to squeeze more VPS onto the servers to cater for extra customers, or (3) no one buys from them anyway?

          April 19, 2011 @ 7:30 am | Reply
        • Thanks LEA :)

LEA is right, we work on the principle of a very controlled growth pattern. We own all of our equipment & IP space so we’re making sure that we can keep providing these plans at the price they’re at without fear of a sudden spike because someone upstream wants a nicer car.

I’d always be fearful of any site/company pushing similar plans out the door w/o any sort of stock limit. These plans are fine for some quick upfront cash but unless you’re looking to scam your clients you’re going to run into funding issues quickly if you aren’t settled in properly.

          Thanks again for the listing,

          Francisco

Well I finally got a VPS at 1:40 AM local time, after watching the stock for nearly 12 hours straight. I appreciate the great deal, but this is a seriously poor method of distributing VPSs. It wastes a whole lot of everyone’s time. I do think that stock availability should be a criterion for the Best LEP survey.

Obviously the definition of Soon(tm) at Frantech is similar to that of Valve (yet both have desirable products in their favor).

“Thus says The Pony, the God of Frantech, ‘Let My people go, that they may sit by their computers all day and all night furiously refreshing cart.php?a=add&pid=67′”

    • As I said, I apologize if it comes off a little pompus but we try to fit everyones demand. Many have spent months waiting on these plans to come up, the least we can do is give them a concrete time. This is the first time we’ve ever segmented our stock to better service users in the Asia region, usually it’s just a big lump of stock at once.

I complain about it, but I’d be hard pressed to find a better distribution method than the one you have for your product, and I’m sure you’ve been working far harder than me these past 12 hours.

Given that you mention a possible distribution method, wouldn’t a simple ‘queue of interested customers’ fit the need of those waiting eagerly for a VPS and yet avoid the massive load of people rushing to grab a deal? You could simply sign up and once the pony decides that it’s time to fire up some more stock, 50% of that is distributed via the ‘old method’ of ‘first come first serve’. The other half would be issued to the people on the waiting list though (in chronological order), with an electronic mail notifying of the deal and two days time to issue a payment. After these two days, the chance/ticket is discarded and the offer handed to the next person on the list. Though a simple place number, one could evaluate the chance of consideration sooner (or later ;)). Just an idea though (and I’d say it shouldn’t take much resource wise to implement).

If you have an order marked as fraud just log a ticket with billing and they can look it over and set your order by to pending if it proves to be OK :)

I certainly question that fraud policy too.

I can certainly put in a address that match the country of my IP and it will pass maxmind easily, but will fail paypal. Or I could put in my billing address in paypal which will fail maxmind. Just because I’m out of the origin country, which is quite normal typical for students who studied overseas.

And I wonder what does maxmind really check? Marking orders from certain countries as possible fraud is one thing, but it can’t really verify exact address.

      • I had no problems paying with a UK paypal account and a US address and IP.

        April 19, 2011 @ 3:50 pm | Reply
        • Arthur:

Only if I could enter a non-UK address in Paypal, which doesn’t seems possible in the Paypal profile. Nor I can do that with my Bank.

I stick to the details that Paypal have on me which is legit. I’m afraid giving the “right” address just to get past maxmind might cause my paypal account to freeze, now or later on, because that address is “wrong” in Paypal’s fraud detection.

I highly doubt that the benefit of a $15 VPS would cover my potential risk.

If anyone in BuyVM see my message, feel free to remove my account and release the $15 vps slot that is held in my account. And, you might as well just say you don’t want to do business with whoever that failed the maxmind fraud test. Since your products get sold out quick every time you might as well save your trouble, and the trouble of that someone who got flagged.

I don’t blame BuyVM for the fraud check, everyone have their own circumstances, however it raised a red flag this time (first ever in fact), in contrast with a dozen other VPS/dedicated that I ordered with other companies before.

I don’t understand what the fuss is all about. Apart from their lucrative 15 bucks per year vps, the other plans are at par or higher than the rates of other budget providers. From LEB itself I can list about dozen of “good” and stable providers with equally attracive prices and similar or better support. The 15/yr plan goes out of stock in couple of minutes and people end up buying the other plans. So marketting wise its working well for dem. But folks if u are in anyway ending up getting the 256 or 512 slices, why wait for weeks and days and bear the frustration when the VPS world has plenty of choices for you ??

    • We provide more features than any of the rest so I guess they want that :) We have a strong reputation and are seen as far more financially sound than many of these other deadpool candidates.

We get a lot of Asia / Pacific business that love the ping times and extra features.

We’re not the best priced anymore but we’re not going to drop our prices to compete on price alone :) We compete on features and generally just a fantastic community.

@Josh – To expand on my original thought, the budget market is going to shrink very soon as IPv4 costs go up for everyone. Companies like burst & myself, though, have our own allocations from ARIN so we don’t “have” to raise prices.

Francisco, I appreciate your services and I am myself having a BuyVM’s cheapest slice which is working quite well for past several months. Probably I am not apt enough to understand the crazyness. In terms of IP space, you do have a edge over other providers who have to depend on their DC. But I don’t think it is correct to calculate the stability of a provider based on his IP allocation. I don’t like your service because you own 9000 or so IPs. I like it because it simply is working for me. The day it stops doing that, I or anyone else would want to switch. So again I am unable to digest the IP alloc = stable host notion (pardon me for that).

          April 20, 2011 @ 1:47 am | Reply
        • I guess it came off wrong. The judge of a host isn’t that but it should be of how well they’ve planned ahead for the future to grow/stabilize their brand. :)

There are many listings on here that are at prices that aren’t sustainable and likely just a ‘boost our market share’, but what happens when IP costs come and bite them? They may offer an OK service but that won’t help when they can’t cover their costs no?

That doesn’t say there isn’t great brands that don’t just rent their IP space. RamHost & Quickweb both get their allocations from their providers and provide a great service.

But, people selling 512MB for $24/y and things like that are going to have a serious reality check when they get kicked in the teeth when their costs go up, or maybe even worse, their providers start capping their allocations.

Suddenly that great deal is going to tank or:

          – They have to suddenly move DC’s to try to shed costs/get a large allocation per node
          — Merge nodes together to handle costs

Everything is relative and no one is going to give away free IP space for much longer with Microsoft willing to fork out $11 each.

If you requested a different (US) IP, it might have gotten added after the private IP (e.g. venet0:17 vs. venet0:0), at least that’s what happened to me. If that’s the case, your server is defaulting to using the 172.16 private IP (since it sees it first) as its outgoing IP, and everyone’s ignoring you / can’t route back to it.

You can either kill the 172.16 ip/interface (no good if you have other BuyVM servers you want to talk to), or change your outgoing IP. Using the new iproute2 interfaces that are apparently the “proper” way to do things now, the command is:

/sbin/ip route change default dev venet0 src

you can put that in your /etc/rc.local so you don’t have to do it manually all the time, though that might be too late in the boot process if you have daemons which need to do network as part of their startup (DNS lookups, etc). Then you’ll need to edit your network script, I guess.

      • We actually added some more scripts to resolve this on reboot thankfully :)

As stated a reboot will make our scripts force the 172 IP into the correct position (at the end).

We’re doing an initial check on 27 tomorrow to see if we have multiple bad disks in this set of gear. We should have a good idea by tomorrow. While adaptec has some good monitoring programs like arcconf we’ve had drives report 100% fine until a reboot happens – suddenly the drive kicks out.

The majority of the nodes are fairly good (70MB/sec+ the majority of the time), but I’m thinking there’s a collection of bad ones in the L5420 nodes.

We’ll know soon and roll replacements if that’s the case :) We have a batch of spare drives on site so we don’t have to wait on newegg/etc.

  125. Yay! I finally got one!

One question, though: I was pleasantly surprised by the abundance of IPv6 addresses, but a bit puzzled by how the node doesn’t seem to have the ip6tables modules loaded. Really, if I can’t set up a firewall for the IPv6 addresses, then I’d rather have the addresses disabled. Am I missing something here?

Also, there was a slight hic-up during setup. Apparently passwords can only be alpha-numeric, or it screws up their setup script. I had to submit a ticket to get it straightened out. So, watch out for that.

Otherwise, I can’t wait to get started! I’ve heard nothing but good things about these guys, and it’s not a minute too late, as I’ve been having issues with my previous provider.

Yes, the apt-get upgrade seems has no problem now after replacing the tar binary.

But touch a dir still shows the issue.

        root@u4:~# mkdir abc
        root@u4:~# touch abc
touch: setting times of `abc’: Bad file descriptor

That is one reason I don’t want to replace the tar binary, since there may be so many other bins need to be replaced.

Some of the reboots that happened before todays lunch one were unplanned since the node simply went south. If we were prepped for it I could have had a tech at HE help me resolve it but that wasn’t the case.

Your spot is saved for you for now for another few days.

Hey macro, I’m sorry to hear that you aren’t satisfied with your BuyVM. I can assure you that this isn’t their normal level of service, as many of my containers do have a higher uptime/performance rating. (See: http://servers.cedricd.org ). BuyVM is one of the best providers I’ve ever seen, providing a great price with more features then most of the other VPS hosts. I hope you can find it to stay with them a while more, as I’m confident that the issues will be resolved. Be assured that they will take care of current clients, whereas some other hosts focus more and more on the newer clients and leave the older ones in the dust. I have notified the administration that there may be an issue with the mass announcements as I have also not been getting them which is understandably annoying at times.

Honestly It’s more important to me -by now- of a host to stay alive as long as it can, and be serious in this regard (staying alive). Whether they have 100 clients and giving them 5 star service, or 10000 clients and giving then 0 star care.

        • This was a triumph.
I’m making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS
It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction.

          Aperture Science:
We do what we must because we can
For the good of all of us
except for the ones who are dead

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying ’till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive

          I’m not even angry
I’m being so sincere right now
Even though you broke my heart and killed me
          And torn it pieces
And threw every piece into a fire
As they burned it hurt because I was so happy for you!
Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we’re out of beta, we’re releasing on time
So I’m glad I got burned
Think of all the things we learned
For the people that are still alive

          Go ahead and leave me
I think I prefer to stay inside
Maybe you’ll find someone else to help you
          Maybe Black Mesa
That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance
Anyway this cake is great, it’s so delicious and moist

Look at me still talking, when there’s science to do
When I look out there it makes me glad I’m not you
I’ve experiments to run, there is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

And believe me I am still alive
I’m doing science and I’m still alive
I feel FANTASTIC and I’m still alive
While you are dying I’ll be still alive
And when you’re dead I’ll be still alive
          STILL ALIVE
          still alive

Sorry, it was just way too tempting :D

I reinstalled with the debian6 template just now. I found that this template had the apache installed already. Why don’t you provide a pure system like the ubuntu 10.04? (I would like to ubuntu 10.04 but due to the futime issue I cannot use it until it is fixed)

I have talked to Anthony about the ubuntu 10.10. But I cannot choose 10.10 since its support will be ended next year.

I like ubuntu, but I would not use any ubuntu other than LTS version as the server’s system since the support period of non-LTS version of ubuntu is too short.

Finally, I chose debian 6. Because debian is like ubuntu and it has a longer support period than non-LTS versions of ubuntu.

The reason why I want long term support is that I want the security updates there even I have been using it for years. And I don’t want to upgrade or reinstall the system, since the upgrading and reinstallation will make my service down and I may have to reinstall many things.

With LTS, I only have to reinstall/upgrade operating system every 5 years, not every 2 years.

        • We’ve been reclaiming gear from our Frantech brand at this point to cover the last of our BuyVM sales :) There was some gear that I didn’t originally mark for reclaim but after a fairly lengthly audit/reorganization I was able to reclaim another 2 – 3 128MB nodes. They won’t last long as usual but that’s how it goes :)

          We’ll have:

          – 2 128MB nodes based on L5320 CPU’s
          – 1 128MB node based on L5420 CPU’s
          – Either 2 1024MB/2048MB nodes based on 5520’s
          – Around 50 – 70 512MB’s left over

The 128MB’s will have adaptec 2405 RAID cards and the 5520’s will have 5805 (8 disk) arrays.

At this point we’ll judge what would work best for the 1024’s. For all we know we’ll take one of them for 256’s.

          Thanks!

We do our best to keep things informed and minus the issues with the pony4 kernel we had fairly long periods of solid uptime on 95% of our nodes so I’m really not sure where your concerns are. If we were so terrible we’d not have the sales rushes we do.

Our 128MB plans make up a fairly small amount of our inventory so please, either take it up in a ticket as it’s non important or just request a refund because i’m about done.

I am not griping about little things, guess I am just used to you being perfect, so little things like these do really stand out and surprise in a unpleasant way. I do not want refunds, on the contrary I was leaning towards prolonging both VPSes instead of just one, but when it’s almost every week either this or that, perhaps I’ll need to think twice, for example this is past 14 hours of node 28: http://ompldr.org/vOGo4dw/2011-05-03T101333Z-buyvm.png Posted a ticked, logged in to IRC, what else can I do to have this fixed?

        May 3, 2011 @ 10:19 am | Reply
        • node28 is pretty much the only node that didn’t take kindly to the pony5 kernel. For some stupid reason it just simply stopped routing packets at one point and was spiking like mad for really no reason. At this point the guys rolled it back to pony4 and it has been stable with minimal/no CPU spikes as far as i’ve seen.

It’s hard for me to diagnose any sort of lag since the line i’m on in Vegas is GARBAGE (a shared T1 for the entire Luxor as far as I can tell) but I’ve been keeping tabs with the guys to make sure i’m not being crazy.

We’ve worked hard to work out any last quirks and will continue to do so. We’re disappointed that the pony5 kernel didn’t take properly on 28 but at this point we’ll just leave 28 alone until we get more word from OVZ about the potential bug.

So a conversation with the BuyVM billing staff member ended in me receiving a complete refund for both of my VPSes. While it has been handled less than satisfactory in some aspects, I must say it is quite impressive that you can admit your problems and provide refund even in some circumstances where it is not per your written ToS.

Since I am in Russia and due to PayPal restrictions can not actually receive payments, I have chosen the refund amount to be directed as a donation to the Free Software Foundation (FSF.org) instead.

    Don’t you know their tactic?
If server goes down, before they tried to fix it, they write announcement first, as if it was scheduled, in order to cover their behind.
And if you complain, they point to the announcement, what a tactic!
Their mindset is weird, as long as there is announcement, server can go down one week.

Any sort of planned maintenance work gets announced 24 hours before it gets done, as per our SLA/FAQ page. You’re welcome to ask one of the 120+ clients in our IRC channel for logs of the bots announcing it showing that we’re not editing dates.

Like pretty much every colocation centre, they either failed when needed to deliver the goods, or some previous incident damaged part or all of all of the UPS system, and so the facility was running on street power whilst the UPS systems were being repaired, and then when street power goes, so do the servers.

I’m convinced the highly paid, highly qualified, highly regarded enginers who design these systems are morons, because they have failed to notice that the systems they design and specify fail time and time again.

This is why you test them once a month. I’m amazed that very few datacenters actually do this.

        • You can try adding “filesystem*” to an exempt line in your /etc/yum.conf :)

The tools it provides are useless on OpenVZ since there isn’t a real filesystem.

    • So — same BuyVM plan, 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable, and your friend is able to do `yum update` but you can’t?

What error message are you getting? Did you check your `/proc/user_beancounters` to see whether there’s a fail in trying to allocate memory (last column)? Maybe you are running some extra processes but your friend are not?

      • kevin:

oh no, this 128/256mb yearly plan. Also, there is no error, it just stuck and do nothing when I do ‘yum update’.
My friend can because he is on different node, but my node 27 is like ‘area 27’.
I just installed webmin barebone and trying to update from there, but not all of them
is updating. well lack of update won’t harm any, I’m just using it for my own small
        project.

        • Do as I said :)

exlude filesystem* and tzdata* in your yum.conf and it’ll update properly from now on.

webmin burns a fair bit of RAM, likely 1/4+ of what you have

    • @Kevin,

You have not disabled the filesystem package. Add the exclude clause to your /etc/yum.conf:

      [main]
      exclude=filesystem

Alternatively send in a ticket to request for a temporary RAM increase, that’s what I did. And, most importantly, you should feel lucky that you’re with Pony and not the give-me-more-money YardVPS.

    • kevin, add the following in the [main] section or you will break udev and pty/tty and need to log a ticket every time you reboot your VM

exclude=udev kernel* mkinitrd module-init-tools MAKEDEV filesystem* tzdata*

We’re likely going to roll out Ubuntu 11.04 & Scientific Linux 6 this weekend as well.

      • True, but many people need the high RAM in a single spot :)

People buying the 1G/2G plans are after the RAM and not the BW/space since those are cheap addons anyone can buy on other plans. Anyone using us for CDN like traffic patterns is using nginx/lighttpd which is low CPU/RAM and then just adding gobs of BW.
