LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

CityNetHost - $3 OpenVZ/Xen VPS with 128MB in Egypt

CityNetHost Mohamed from CityNetHost emailed me about their previous OpenVZ offer to LowEndBox is now also available in Xen (many readers’ preferred virtualization here). Same promo code LEB50. Here is the order link. $3/month (or $30/year) gives you

  • 128MB memory
  • 20GB storage (from 10GB, upgraded with promo code)
  • 200GB/month data transfer
  • Xen/OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers in Egypt. Good if you are looking for a cheap Xen box around the Middle East area. From previous discussions the connectivity and bandwidth seems to be their weak point, although they do have good latency to East/South European countries. Moreover Mtalaat is also around this blog much answering questions. Good idea to read through previous discussions and use their help system if you have any concern.

PayPal is also now available as a payment method.

  2. They always offering a nice price.
But I wonder, when I make an order and completed the payment for their promotion VPS ( http://www.citynethost.com/vps104offer.asp), my money suddenly being refunded without any explanation.

So, I guess, I will not try to purchase any of them anymore.

My transaction is not fraud, altough it is high risk to accept order from Indonesia, I can guarantee that any payment I made is using my own Paypal ballance / my Credit Card.

I’ve purchasing VPS’es from QuickWeb, 123System, 2Host, Nordic, NewWebsite, etc, and altough my order were marked asfraud, they still process it.

But, maybe I will contact your billing departement later :)
Since I don’t have much time for managing my VPS’es at this moment

I have a better experience with openVZ ( with good hosts atleast ) than with XEN.

  10. It is possible to use IPv6 tunnel on OpenVZ.
If SIT is not available you can use http://code.google.com/p/tb-tun/

  13. that’s a speed test done on my VPS from CityNetHost (it’s 512Mb OpenVZ one):

    ksx4system@ramses:~$ wget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
    --2010-09-23 02:33:04-- http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
    Resolving cachefly.cachefly.net... 140.99.94.175
    Connecting to cachefly.cachefly.net|140.99.94.175|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
    Saving to: `100mb.test'

    100%[=====================================>] 104,857,600 2.48M/s   in 41s

    2010-09-23 02:33:46 (2.44 MB/s) - `100mb.test' saved [104857600/104857600]

imvho it performs *really* well for its price… I got it from a few days, without problems (running it as a 2nd VPS, 1st one is a “low end box” too but located in USA, ramhost.us).

  14. Another speed test of my CityNetHost OpenVZ 512Mb VPS (may be very important for users in Poland, GTS Energis is best businness ISP here):

    ksx4system@ramses:~$ wget http://noc.gts.pl/100mb.gts
    --2010-09-23 04:28:46-- http://noc.gts.pl/100mb.gts
    Resolving noc.gts.pl... 217.153.108.10
    Connecting to noc.gts.pl|217.153.108.10|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: 102400100 (98M) [text/plain]
    Saving to: `100mb.gts'

    100%[=====================================>] 102,400,100 1.05M/s   in 92s

    2010-09-23 04:30:18 (1.06 MB/s) - `100mb.gts' saved [102400100/102400100]

it’s of course outside Poland but result is good too.

ping stats to my VPS from home (northern Poland):

20 packets transmitted, 20 received, 0% packet loss, time 19006ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 93.420/97.199/113.601/4.068 ms

and from my other VPS (USA, Kansas City – ramhost.us):

20 packets transmitted, 20 received, 0% packet loss, time 19084ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 172.782/187.491/196.389/7.902 ms

for its price – their VPSes are just cool. :)

Well i signed up for their previous offer. And after one month i can easily say that they dont offer what they commit. Their boxes are overloaded. Processes get killed even before limit of guaranteed ram , what to talk of Burst Ram. In short you get what you pay for. So if you want something even remotely serious to host , they are not advisable.

I just canceled my Xen account with this provider. I had ordered a Debian system. It took a couple of days for them to install an actual debian system on the node (before I was provided twice with CentOS and a Debian system that would not boot). Finally, the debian system proved to be not very usable. The installed kernel could not be changed and would only load modules signed by the provider. However, the /lib/modules directory was missing, so there was no loop module and no iptables. The provider didn’t want to provide me with a signed set of standard modules, so for every module I would have to open a support ticket. Besides they refused to provide a loop module at all. They would not explain the reason for that (on Xen I don’t see a possible reason, but maybe I’m mistaken here).
Finally I decided to invoke their 30 days money back program and they paid back the 3 USD immediately.
