Dead Pool March 2011 - JBoost.com

There hasn’t been a month without VPS providers going under, since I first posted about the dead pool in May last year. There is only one in March 2011.

JBoost

Current Status: Home page showing directory index

I first posted about JBoost back in November 2010, who are the reseller of BurstNet at discounted price ($1 cheaper than Burst retail). I guess reselling VPS packages does not really put you in any advantage in this cut-throat market, and selling it cheaper than Burst just cuts the profit margin even deeper. See this WHT thread about what happened, but it’s good that all clients are transferred over to Burst so I guess no one has lost a server. “Personal reason” was stated for the exit, although I wondered what happened to their 15 in-house employees and office.

Others

Okay. There was only one whose home page cease to work (my definition of in the dead pool). However AFAIK there might be others who have gone out of business or got acquired. For example

  • HazeNet — they surely look dead from comments in their last post. Then they got acquired by Thrust::VPS. Still running on their old server so I won’t mark them as dead yet.
  • VPSTree — they have been like a ghost ship for several months. Home page and the servers are still up, but no one responds to anything. Even cancelled VPS still gets going and going. However it looks like it’s gradually falling apart. Maybe we’ll pronounce it dead soon.

That’s it for this month :)

VPSTree could well be personal issues – seems strange that things keep going. Must still be paying their bills on auto credit card or subscriptions mab?

    Nice easy month anyway!

I’ve never received anything from setuplink , my VPS is just gone , that’s freaking nuts.

JBoost gave all their clients to BurstNET due to personal reasons, so no real harm done. We had a few servers with them and things were cleared up nicely (BurstNET honored the same price).

Sad to see companies closing, though.

LOL @ VPSTree! They reminds me of TeamVPS, once died Virpus claimed they acquired TeamVPS, but I don’t know the reality behind this story, I even doubt Virpus where the people behind TeamVPS from first place. Anyway, their VPSs too remained running for several months for free and at excellent performance (even better than b4 death!).

Ah, yes, TeamVPS and Virpus. The months (under TeamVPS) of zero support and okay performance. The months (under Virpus) of decent performance. Then the hardware failure, the repeated insistences by support staff that I wasn’t a customer, Ken’s repeated promises that a new VM would be provisioned, the e-mails and tickets that have gone unanswered for nine months, the VM that still hasn’t been provisioned, the endless waiting…

Not the best service I’ve ever received from Mr. Lee’s Greater Hong Kong.

Opps!!! you had much worse experince than I had. Support tickets with no any signs of life, sure worst part ever till now.

Thought Virpus might have improve too by joining the dead pool at LEB, and announcing start of death state :D

I think you should put enotch networks on that list.

I ordered a Xen from them back in Feb and it wasn’t provisioned in over a month so I did a successful paypal reversal. I called their 1-800 number and no one picks up. I also called their domain phone number and their voice mail was full…

Yes, I filed a dispute and it was successful. I got my money back, and now enotch continues to send me bills these past 2 months.

Was JBoost even a big reseller of Burst in the first place for Burst to want to acquire them… ?

    April 9, 2011 @ 6:58 am | Reply
    • Hello,

I don’t think they where that big. Even if they are not Burst would have no issues on just picking up them clients. More for Burst! Even tho they keep resell price’s they still make money…. Burst is just good host when it comes down to it.

Thanks for your reply. You’d think a big host wouldn’t care because it’s simply not worth their time…

        • Hi,

          Your welcome.

Even tho Burst is big they still think about the clients and not how much they pay. I have been with them for years and yet to have a bad time. Yes i do get upset with the replys and stuff but you can’t beat the team work they put in to help!

          -Michael.

          April 10, 2011 @ 5:43 am | Reply
    • Because JBoost is just a reseller, so their clients are still Burst’s clients. I would imagine that it is a lot more trivial to migrate failed resellers’ clients over to your own accounts.

If you knew more about what actually happened, I’m sure you wouldn’t be posting that. Nonetheless, all JBoost clients are safe with BurstNET unlike many other hosts that decide to close and jump ship with everyone’s data.

    • Not going to say who but I just got an email from one of those folks asking me if I wanted to buy them out.

The price they quoted me was something like 70x monthly price for the number of clients they said they had. Had a chuckle at that.

      April 22, 2011 @ 12:56 am | Reply
      • $50k? xD
        Just guessing :P

        April 22, 2011 @ 12:58 am | Reply
        • Not going to say the total as that may give them away. I was quoted $500 per client. I;ve bought out a few hosts, even 1 or 2 unsolicited like this, but the most i ever paid was like 14x monthly price.

Might have been worth it if the hardware was included. I don;t think it is as they would have said so. Probably leased.

I don’t know this regarding NordicVPS.. he seems stubborn and simpy don’t want to die yet. With his lack of skills, lack of responsability, constant failures, etc.. dead seems inevitable, but I wondering.. will this happens in our 15$/year period or some short time later. Not that it makes some difference…
