EDIS - €3.99 256MB KVM VPS in Austria

EDIS William from EDIS emailed me quite a while ago about KVM VPS availability in their Austria data center, which was also announced here in their previous post. Yes, KVM again. I asked last November that why don’t we have KVM low end providers, but we seem to have so many of them these days. EDIS’s KVM offers are relatively more expensive than their Linux-vserver based plans, starting at €1.99 for 128MB but with only 1GB of disk space. Even the Debian 5 VPS hosting nothing but this very blog uses more space. €3.99/month KVM Smart gives you double — at 2GB which is more usable. Use coupon code BESMART would get you another upgrade to 5GB space.

• 256MB memory
• 5GB storage
• 100GB/month data transfer on 1Gbps
• KVM

Servers in Graz, Austria (test IP: 91.227.205.2). Check my previous posts about them on their background and people’s general comments about EDIS’s services. Also check these benchmarks posted by SwordfishBE on their KVM Smart VPS. They have been around for 12 years, and provide great connectivity if you are from that part of Europe.

Nice offer for people that are in Australia, few of my clan members are in Australia, but still traffic is expensive, and you don’t see alot of hosts that have 100GB Transfer

Maybe going to buy this for a TS3 server in australia

As usual thanks for listing!

As future things:
Italy VRS/Hosting will be available in some days/weeks – I delivered the server yesterday at the provider.
Own image upload for KVM will be done soon.
USA (east) VRS/Hosting will also be available in some time, but dont quote me on that – Finding good US colocation providers is not easy…

So far this is all, maybe some other locations will follow – i have quite a bit in my mind but sadly we cannot realise all of them since it should be profitable too ;-)

Would anyone be interested in some combination packages?
I.e. get 1 VRS in Austria, Switzerland, UK, Italy and USA and pay a lower fee than for each alone normally
Or take 3 from any location and get them cheaper.

As usual you can reach us over support @ edis.at or by Phone (0043 316 827 500 300) (however not me, i’m on vacation til Thursday :p)

Greetings

@Preetam: KVM is only available on HDD (SAS), VRS are available on both depending on location but never at the same time.

Great that they are now offering KVM aswell, I’m having a really good austian v-server box with them, which has 100% uptime so far and performs in general quite well. I’m also interested at their swiss and italian location, maybe I will get some new KVM boxes there. :)

I’d like to sort out one thing about William and EDIS and hope that there will be no more reason for any rumors:

Will started working for EDIS in April 2011 … after the following happened:

March 2011: Suddenly an unexpected growth in vps sales occurred … we were looking for a reason.
One of our customers mentioned a posting on lowendbox .. we had no clue what that was.
We figured out that somebody was promoting our products on that particular forum and was helping people to sign up (with screenshots and detailed descriptions, … the signup process was in German language only by that time and actually really crappy I must say ;- )
After that I tried to figure out who this person was and tried to get in touch with him. Obviously he must have been a customer of ours to be able to post detailed reviews and all of that … well, … caught him!
After a couple of long and late emails … some conversations on the phone … we finally hired him … he moved to Graz and is working for EDIS since that.
And we are very happy to have him in our team!

And once again a huge thank you to lowendbox.com and the whole crowd here for being the driving force behind our vps
AND … without all of you, William would not be working for us now ;-)

Cheers,
Gerhard

@ville:
Yes, i was living near Vienna (Lower Austria) and working as a freelancer at this time for mostly Asia based companys due to my family background ;-)

So it was not a very big move, just some hours – needless to say it was still not easy to get everything going here but it worked out quiet well with all the help i recieved :)

If a customer minds about personal data non-disclosure, (customer name, ip, payment information, etc) is there a data center better than another (where local law would protect such information) or are they all the same?

(Is there a country where the law protects more the privacy of a user than another one or do you apply the same rules in all locations)

• Hi Bob! apologies to you as well for the late reply. EDIS is still in the launch-phase of KVM (we started KVM about 3 weeks ago) – additional services are being developed (eg. upload of custom images) … Looking at the KVM sales-curve of the last 3 weeks I would absolutely say that KVM will become available on multiple locations soon. We were thinking about KVM in Switzerland as the next step, but will start a quick poll to see what our customers really need.

This is not mentioned to critize EDIS and their otherwise excellent service however even with IT stated in some maxmind (which means same as nothing) and in RIPE stated as austian IP routed to IT it is and it will be always recognized for most of the internet as IP from austrian IP address pool and internet services which from some reason require italian IP wont work. Same as buyVM canadian IPs which are used in States can’t access HULU TV or FDC american IPs which are used in their czech DC can’t access czech IRCnet servers, etc…
So if you think that you will be abled to use this vps from italy with some service which require italian IP as example IRCnet IT servers you’re wrong. It won’t work.
If you require IT vps with proper italian IP this maybe isn’t option for you. I would like to have IT vps however I think that I will pass this offer and wait some proper low end IT vps.

Just tryed and you’re incorrect William :) IRCnet recognize them as IPs from .at IP pool and they cannot be connected to any italian IRCnet server while austrian IRC server recognize and accept connection as “local”. But I have your good .at VPS for this already and there’s no sense to have two vpses from different locations connected to same austrian IPv4 IRCnet server.
For the sake of bouncher stability it would be great to have italian vps connected to their local servers but as this isn’t possible sadly all rest isn’t really interesting for me here so I will keep most likely only austrian vps and let this one unused to expire next year.

With EFnet is different – they mostly don’t limit connections to local users and everyone can connect to (mostly?) any server anyway (but that’s not network for us europeans ;-)

• @Spirit: maybe they are using maximind geoIP database – the updated was made at the beginning of September and they might not have the update yet. as far as I know some versions of geoIP are only updated once per month (this means, the update will follow in the first days of October and this might solve this issue).
best … Gerhard

• *grr* 2 typos within 3 lines is not good – sorry for that. I wanted to say that we updated the country flag after the last update was released – some versions of geoIP will then receive the updated DB in the first days of October and this should fix your issues.
Once again sorry for the typos (its already late here …)
cheers, Gerhard

Sadly things don’t work that way and maxmind isn’t authoritative. It’s only one commercial service from plenty and means a little..

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate your service and kindness and don’t take this as complain but this /21 is assigned to Austria and it will be always that way even if small part of IPs from this block is temporarly routed to Italy and this noted in RIPE database.

You can see country IP blocks here http://www.countryipblocks.net/

IP Address assigned to: AUSTRIA

IP Address: 178.255.155.79 is located within the following Network:

Network: 178.255.152.0
CIDR: 178.255.152.0/21
Mask: 178.255.152.0/255.255.248.0
Network Range: 178.255.152.0 – 178.255.159.255
Total addresses: 2,048
Registrar: RIPENCC

Some individual services like maxmind might recognize it as italian IP but for bigger part of the internet it will be always austrian IP.
As I said, I appreciate your service (i.e. austrian vps) and this isn’t complain neither negative critic (you provide too good service to be negative about) but I would like to make you to understand that relying on some maxmind in this case have very little weight and most internet won’t work they way some commercial service wants. /21 IP range is assigned to Austria.

September 19, 2011 @ 7:36 pm | Reply
• @Spirit: thank you very much for your explanations. This issue can be solved. We will request a /24 from RIPE assigned to the Italian IP space and immediately roll out new IP addresses.
Cheers, Gerhard

I am not sure what your problem with ircnet is…

Also we dont want to use local IPs since we have no portability then when the ISP goes out of business or something else – In future we will try to use our own Subnets everywhere.
Maxmind and WorldIP are by far the most used GeoDBs and i never even heard about yours before (and i use Geodbs for anything, from my DNS to my websites and my IRC…)

As example: Big ISPs like UPC or Deutsche Telekom have their /15s registered to “DE” or “AT” and still have subnets in /22, /21 or even /24 sizes in their other presences which works fine.
Example: UPC Ireland users get their IPs from UPC Austrias /15 network and still have no problems connecting to IRC Networks and Irish limited websites.

We have this IPs since a merely 3 weeks and of course not all (not even most, just some) GeoDBs are updated now – This will take time.

The pros outweight the cons in this case in my opinion.

@Swordfish:
We now assign /122 subnets in IPv6 of 65000 IPs size ;-)
@Dennis:
Yes at KVM, you can request it over support – it is BETA though.

I don’t have any problem with IRCnet. Did I said something like that? Don’t add to my writings something what isn’t said.

But about all rest.. how you’re not sure as I wrote very clear and simple – this IP allocated to austria can’t be connected to any Italian IRCnet server but it can be to Austrian. IRCnet recognize it as IP from IP block allocated to Austria. What isn’t clear here? Feel free to try it by yourself.

Maxmind and WorldIP are by far the most used GeoDBs…

Completely irrelevant if some commercial service cover huge part, lets say… 20% of market and all others together cover 80% of it. 80% of internet will still treat it as austrian IP.

…and i never even heard about yours before…

Irrelevant again. It’s not mine. It’s just one from many helpful online tools.. in this case “IP blocks allocated to countries”, which I used to tell you something which you fail to undrestand. It’s very helpful sometimes, but nothing more than that.

And if you wanna stick with that… lets try 50 random IP-to-country tools. 3% of them will maybe show you Italian location. Do you consider this as helpful? Wanna take a bet that next month wont be much different? And so what if this number increase from 5% to 20%.. or even to 90% (which is not going to happen) – big part of the internet will still treat it as IP from .at IP block. What is so hard for you to understand here?
Your argument regarding maxmind is like “sudo apt-get should work with your linux because Ubuntu is most popular linux distro”. (but I use centos)

You don’t need to be defensive. I didn’t attack edis.at, I just posted how things regarding this little part of AUSTRIAN IP block temporary routed to Italy are and if you accept it or not. And I agree that this have also some advantages. As example in case of DC migration user would be able to keep same edis.at IP even after migration – that’s something good for sure.

I am sorry to make this post to look like arguing because I have very high opinion regarding edis.at host (otherwise I wouldn’t have two vpses here and recommend your service also to others) however I can’t accept your defending of interests of company as fact which can apply for whole internet. Those IPs from Austrian /21 blocks are recognized by most of the internet as Austrian not Italian. Period.

I think that I said what I had to say and to prevent further my posts regarding this which might look like critizing edis.at which as excellent hosting provider don’t deserve that for sure I will rather mail Will… to see what’s the difference between my and his IP from same range.

September 20, 2011 @ 3:53 pm | Reply
• @Spirit: Thank you very much for your long reply. It obviously sounds a bit defensive, but that’s ok. We don’t have to quarrel about anything. We clearly understand your opinion and highly value you as our customer.

What William tried to underline in his last posting was: The IP-addresses we use in Italy have been re-delegated 3 weeks ago. RIPE WHOIS records have been updated 3 weeks ago. This means, that not all databases (neither commercial nor any other public databases) have been synced with the right country-flag yet – only some. To us, the only database authoritative is RIPE itself – this is where the ip-addresses have been assigned to. We don’t know exactly about the update-policies of all of these ip-database-providers. The only thing we wanted to say was: please allow some more time for the databases to sync – this will maybe take some more weeks and the “problem” will disappear by itself.

Kind regards,

if everything goes well, native IPv6 should become available with additional bandwidth we ordered through a new, high performance carrier.
Additional fiber connections will be installed in around 4 weeks timeframe, new routing infrastructure will be delivered in 3 to 5 weeks from now.
I personally would assume, that native IPv6 will be available in less than 8 weeks from now.

• Hello Miguel,

I think that this is not the right place to discuss payment issues, but thank you for your friendly feedback regarding our products!

Let’s put it that way: we are a bit old-fashioned here and and deliver products right after the order was placed. The invoice is sent a couple of days later. We also give our clients the chance to try out our products 4 hours free of charge.

BUT …

we assume, that “placing an order” in an online-shop is a common task and a person should be aware of that he/she is about to purchase or rent something after several confirmations and there will be invoices to be payed. EDIS starts rendering services to this person immediately. Not to use provided infrastructure is not a valid cancellation! We do not check if somebody is logging-in his/her vps regularly or not. If you – for any reason – would like to get rid of your product, PLEASE LET US KNOW by simply sending an email to support@edis.at – mentioning your client-id, product name (preferably with ip-address) and your wish to cancel. If you do that, the contract(s) will be terminated and the machines recycled.

Another thing that just crossed my mind so I place it here: our products are low-end-priced, but hosted on premium hardware with the best carriers available in certain locations. Please be fair and pay your bills!

Thank you very much!

Cheers,

BTW, is there a discount if we pay yearly?

33. >> BESMARTER gives you additional discount on SMART PLANS, but requires annual, non-redundable prepayment

with BESMARTER you pay EUR 42,– per annum instead of EUR 47,88 and you will get 5 GB instead of 2 GB

Allright, thanks!

Would it be possible to know a test IP of the new node?

Thanks :)

Hi.

Payment is paypal only or it’s possible to pay via ukash / paysafecard or anything else?

Thx

• Hi Jack!
sorry for the late reply. We offer credit card payments and paypal. For larger annual prepayments we provider Western Union and if you are based in Austria or Germany direct debit services from your bank account are offered.

So far there was no requirement for additional payment methods. paysafecard is way too expensive – they charge you FIFTEEN % disagio on every single purchase and ukash does not really seem to be “business-ready” (please correct me, I might be wrong). As far as I know, there is also an option to top-up your paypal account using paysafecard (isn’t it?) – maybe this would also give you the freedom you are looking for.

best wishes,
Gerhard

35. Hi guys!
Just in case you did not read it on twitter or facebook: EDIS >>DOUBLED<< included bandwidth on all VRS and KVM plans.
This also affects already existing contracts with immediate effect. Merry pre-Christmas ;-)

details you'll find here … http://en.edis.at/virtual-root-server_82.htm

cheers,

I was browsing edis.at and liked what I saw. What I couldn’t find, IPv6 support on KVM hosts and upgradability of KVM hosts. Say I start with a micro today, using the mentioned code above, ‘besmart’, i still get a ‘doucble’ of 2gb?

What if I want to upgrade later to kvm smart, is that even possible? Would the coupon still count? e.g. upgrade to 5g then?

Same if i then upgrade again to kvm starter, would the double still hold here?

Lastly, what about IPv6 support?

Sorry for ‘nagging’ but thinking long term here ;)

and sinds I can’t edit, as an AMD ‘fanboi’ do you have AMD kvm’s? Also, any plans for Linux Containers for VRS?

Linux Containers is quite new, VRS (Virtual Root Server) is what I understood is edis’s name for OpenVZ and KVM, if i understood correctly.

• Hi Oliver
EDIS VRS series are Linux vServer containers – no tun/tap device available, no vpn, shared 16 or 24 cpu cores (linux only)
EDIS KVM series are KVM servers – full hardware virtualization, tun/tap enabled, 1 shared 2,5 GHz CPU core (freeBSD, Windows, any ISO bootable)

EDIS does not use openVZ.

Cheers,
Gerhard

• Hi Oliver!
upgrades are possible any time, BUT you have to migrate your data to a new (larger) KVM, because the filesystem can not be enlarged easily. The coupon code “BESMART” is only valid on our SMART vps plans (KVM smart and VRS smart) – it gives you 5 GB instead of 2 GB HDD. IPv6 support is currently available on our Austrian KVM plans – the other locations will be enabled in Q1/Q2 2012.
… and we only work with Intel machines – no AMD CPUs here – on KVM it makes no difference at all, as you get a virtual KVM cpu anyway ;-)

Merry Christmas!

37. and here comes one side-note … we are currently working on a migration tool, to easily upgrade KVM machines automatically.
This tool will become available within 1 months timeframe. This tool upgrades RAM and HDD without having to re-install the server. A 5 to 10 minutes downtime applies while upgrade is in progress.

Cheers,
Gerhard

38. Hi guys!
Just in case you did not notice yet … we changed our VPS billing system to whmcs … this means: realtime invoicing, online paypal billing, no more stupid cancellation times, more convenience for you and for us … and, (I almost forgot the mention that) an easy to use shopping cart for our VPS ;-) YEAH!

Thank you very much to all of you – YOU are the driving force behind these developments ;-)
