LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

GigaTux - £3.99 128MB Xen VPS in Fremont

GigaTux While few US-based companies have crossed the pond to sell UK-based low end VPS, many have came from the other side — GigaTux in this case. Marc emailed me that they have now started offering Hurricane Electric Fremont-2 based Xen VPS, and use promo code LOWENDBOX-0211M to bring the price of “Uno L” package down to £3.99/month (~USD$6.48). Here is what you will get

  • 128MB memory
  • 5GB storage
  • 125GB/month data transfer
  • Xen

The above promo code is available only to Fremont-based services and not their UK and Germany based VPS. GigaTux has been in business since February 2007 (makes them 4 year old this month). HE.com’s Fremont DC seems to be pretty popular because of its connectivity to Asia Pacific. There might be better deals, although currently neither BuyVM nor NeoSurge has any stock there.

Just because buyvm and neosurge are cheaper doesn’t make them better deals.

I was unimpressed with neosurge’s performance after 2 months of trialing a Fremont VPS from them. Also, the performance of a buyvm 128M vps can leave a lot to be desired (although it is good value for the money!).

Of course, to be fair we need to know if GigaTux provides more performance for the higher price tag.

Anyone actually use one of these things from GigaTux?

    • Hi Joe,

Although it’s always hard to quantify the performance of a VPS (as it ultimately depends on who else is on the server), we do proactively monitor the servers to ensure that CPU and disk IO is always acceptable to all users.

The Fremont server is indeed very speedy, so let me know if there are any specific tests you like me to run.

I’ve just ran hdparm from inside one of our pretty busy, internal VPSs, and get:

      -bash-3.2# hdparm -t /dev/xvda

      /dev/xvda:
      Timing buffered disk reads: 264 MB in 3.02 seconds = 87.52 MB/sec

Additionally, download links are available at:

      http://node01001.gigatux.com/zero-10MB.bin
      http://node01001.gigatux.com/zero-100MB.bin

      Thanks,

  4. Well, that’s a pretty interesting offer. I’m already a user, so won’t benefit that much. But for you guys, if you need a cheap, stable, fast, and supported VPS, then go for it, I’ve been hosting on Gigatux since a while and I have no complains, which is weird because I tend to complain about pretty much everything ;)

I don’t see the point of going with GigaTux, you could get a better deal then this 3 years ago, with Xen

    • I don’t recall seeing many deals this cheap three years ago, but perhaps you’re right. Either way, we don’t compete just on price, but provide a good service and performance.

  7. Ooh, pretty interesting deal here! Definitely good value for money and excellent service in the time I’ve used GigaTux. I’m going to note this for the next time I need such a VPS.
