LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Jones IT - $5 384MB OpenVZ VPS

Updated May 2011 — Looks like Jones ITC is no longer doing hosting. Their website is now just a contact page with no mention on VPS hosting.

Jones IT Consultant Justin from Jones IT Consulting emailed me that he too also has a low end box offer. Being “burnt by RackVM” last year, Justin is branching out his IT consultancy business to also provide cheap VPS hosting starting at $5/month.

  • 384MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 5GB storage
  • 50GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers are in Kansas City MO and likely to be with Joe’s Data Center. Justin himself is based in Texas if the WHOIS contact information is correct — and the domain has only been registered since last July. TUN/TAP interface is supported, and there’s maximum 6 hours lag on setting up new orders, which currently is PayPal only.

  1. If they are with Joe’s, is it safe to assume that since their colo offers 1500GB/month traffic, and this package offers 50GB/month traffic that they will be putting approximately 1500/50 = 30 VPS nodes on the machine?

30 VPS nodes at 384MB guaranteed per node comes out at exactly 11GB of RAM, so can we also assume that the machine hosting these nodes has 12GB RAM?

Might be some useful foresight for potential customers? Do we this this would cause an overloaded server? Seems like the type of IO used would be the key factor on such a machine.

50 Gb BW what for ???

    January 10, 2011 @ 4:25 am | Reply
    • For websites. Yes I know 50GB/month is less than useful to run VPN/anonymouse proxy service, BitTorrent sites or to run scrappers for splog sites — but I usually don’t prefer to have these neighbours on the same box as my VPS anyway.

Amen. Sometimes less is quite a bit more. :)

        • It still does not mean that I will buy from Jones ITC — too new a company I think.

However these days I’ve learnt that I should just get the smallest package that I need at a price that I am willing to pay. Monthly data is actually smaller the better if you are just making “normal websites”. A typical text-intensive blog does not use more than 100GB/month — if you do then you have a different problem than juggling $7/month on VPS. A business website that gets a few hundred visitors per day probably uses even less.

I am at a stage that I am no longer interested in getting ridiculously large bandwidth, huge amount of storage space, or memory that I would never use, and then fight with all the bozos there on those over-subscribed resource.

        • What’s with the flood of 384mb offers?

        • *shrug* Half way between 256 and 512.

It’s interesting that he’s running this off of his consulting site and didn’t spin the hosting off onto a new domain. Although then you wonder, as LEA mentions, how much experience the company has, how many folks are working there, etc.

Their IP address reverts back to Joe’s DC. I;m wondering if their site and support mechanism exists within the same space as their hosting servers. That would be a concern, if something were to happen.

Yeah, I wouldn’t buy from him either, because I’ve got servers in the same DC with Wholesaleinternet. Single point of failure, and so on.

But for hosting websites or mailservers or DNS, I’d *so* much rather wind up on a server that wasn’t hosting five bittorrent trackers, three seedboxes, and a dozen rapidleech sites… which seems to be what you get at providers offering terabytes of transfer per month. “I can haz reasonable i/o performance nao, pls?”

512k smallest vps at linode cost about 20usd per month, and they setup 40 vps per server. (i think i read this info on their site)

Now you do the math. My guess is (generally speaking, i don’t knwow Jones It) you share the host with about 100 other vps, or 150 on a 256k offer. Even more on a oversold node.

  4. Thanks LEB for posting my offer.

I want to let you guys know that I have built my services around the knowledge I’ve built being a VPS customer myself. I believe in customer service and go above and beyond to support my clients. My business is not marketed as a larger hosting provider and I do not intend to go that route.

Hughesey – Joes DC offers 2TB on each node. They haven’t updated there website. I monitor my servers bandwidth and disk IO closely to ensure enough resources for all clients.

I am completely open about my hardware. I have 4 nodes all identical. They are Dell PE1950 with Xeon 5110 CPUs. Each node has 16GB of memory. For disks i have 2 500GB WD RE3 in RAID 1 on each node. Again if disk IO is high and performance is taking a hit I will add new nodes. These are great systems for LEB hosting.

I strongly believe on starting small and upgrading my servers as I add new clients. I believe this is were many company’s fail.

If you guys have any questions shoot me an email inquire@jonesitc.com

  5. I have had one of his VPSs for about 2 months. (when he gave out 3 free on lowendtalk)

I never saw vzfree say I had stuff swapped out and never noticed any downtime except for the one which was planned. (I don’t monitor it as it’s just used for one of the 4 nameservers in my DNS cluster.)

I have one core of a:
    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5110 @ 1.60GHz
    cpu MHz : 557.990

wget from my friend’s dedicated server:
    2011-01-12 03:02:18 (1.03 MB/s) – `freevps.us-backup.tar.gz’ saved [236485665/236485665]

    Uncompressing a 225mb tar.gz took 0m15.691s.

My forum which it’s index page takes at least 0.04 seconds to generate on every other VPS I tried and my friend’s dedi (no RAID) takes 0.0287399 seconds on this VPS. I might move that forum over to this VPS along with my other sites.

    Hello,

I’m also having 1 of the free vps from Justin and must say it is performing really well and Justin is doing a good job here.
Currenly I’m using it as a munin server to gather stats from my other vps machines.
The plan is also to put backup dns on it. At the moment I’m happily testing my drupal sites on it.

Here are some specs and benchmarks:

  8. It has been showing “Services will be restored shortly. Thank you for your patience.” for a week already. If I am a customer my patience would have run out by now.

  9. Im still here. Im going to have services restored at the end of the week. I had to move my servers out of Joes DC. Joe decided that he would block a large subnet of IPs and prevent all access to my servers. He said that one of my IPs were getting DDos. He then refused to communicate with me. I even offered to pay him to give me a new subnet of IPs. Im setting my servers up in the Level 3 datacenter here in Houston on Friday.

My customers have been understanding in this process.
