LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

NewHOST - €3 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Romania Exclusive Offer

NewHost Mihai, system administrator at NewHOST.ro emailed me their exclusive offers for LowEndBox readers — this package would not be found on their website. For €3/month (+ VAT if you are in the area that requires paying it) you can get the following VPS (UpdatedDirect order link here, sorry I forgot to include it in the first place):

  • 256MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer on 10Mbps
  • 600MHz CPU limit
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Thanks to Google Translate, I found that NewHOST runs runs their own data center in Bucharest, Romania with pretty good domestic connectivity — I guess any Romanian friend here can probably testify that. They were founded 2005 according to their Facebook page, and looks like an established company. Maybe a good company to look into if you are in the East/South East Europe area.

Attractive-looking offer, from a host with redundant DNS, in a country you don’t see a lot of hosting offers from, at least on the English-language WWW.

Reading their site (in Romanian, apparently; odd how intelligible it is, given that I don’t actually technically understand the language) it looks like they’re connected to the ‘net via Frankfurt. Not sure how useful that makes this for those of us West of Germany. For that matter, if connections to Moscow and places East backtrack through Frankfurt…

    Hello,

Feel free to read this report and pay special attention to page 10.

    http://wwwfp.akamai.com/dl/whitepapers/akamai_state_of_the_internet_q2_2010.pdf

The explanation is simple, the internet here is cheap, the labor cost is low, this is why we can afford going this low. There are however many “apartment” companies in Romania because of the same reason, however with us there is a different situation, we were one of the few companies that were able to raise during the economic crisis because of good management and good professionals.

You can test the speed here:
    http://lowendbox.newhost.ro

The TUN interface is disabled by default and is activated free of charge for customers that require it.

    Thank you.

And some other clarifications just to get a more clear picture (this is for geeks like me).

We don’t do our routing using an old Pentium 4 machine, we have our border router (Cisco 6509) in a neutral colocation datacenter and the core router (Cisco 6509) in their secondary location. We only use Cisco 3560 and FTP Cat6 cabling with patch panels in each rack with a central rack that does nothing but housing the passive networking components.

Our clients can create their custom reverse DNS entries on the fly, not like other companies where you have to open a ticket just for that, we have a backup server that is ready to handle manual backups initiated by the VPS users.

The only limitation with our VPS services is that upgrades must be activated manually (extra IPs, extra bandwidth, traffic limit waiver, enable TUN/TAP, WHM license issuing).

With my question to the price i dont meant your prices compared to other companys prices.
I meant you prices for english speaking customers and for romanian speaking.
VPS ONE on romanian language site 6€/ month
VPS ONE on after switching to english as language 14,99€/ month

  16. Mihai:

Now I know what you mean. Simply because we generaly don’t have english speaking customers, generating an english version of the website was done only for a plus in our image as a hosting company. This version however remained unchanged after moving to OpenVZ, what you’re seeing on the English version of the VPS service page is the old prices that were not updated. I will ask the devel team to change this today.
    Sorry about that.

    • That’s just how almost every other VPS providers configured their WHMCS.

I normally just put in provider’s own domain name :)

  19. Mihai:

Yes, either request a new domain or just fill in an existing domain of yours.
It is necessary in order to maintain an easy to understand VPS list.

Everything seems good after a few days. They have quite a few distros available, notably Arch, which surprisingly works great with the “old” OpenVZ EL5 kernel. The speed is great, and the latency to the US is almost unnoticeable even in an SSH session (around 100ms ping).

The customer area (not SolusVM, but NewHOST’s billing/services/etc. area) is a bit weak in terms of functionality. On a somewhat worrying note, it operates entirely over http with no https ability, sending the member password that can do all sorts of things to your VPS in the clear. It also sends you the password via email, so it’s sitting around in plain text somewhere. On the plus side, the SolusVM interface is separate and behind https, and you can set a different password there.

    • Mihai:

As mentioned before, this low latency is possible because of two of our providers: Global Crossing and Level 3 which minimize the numbers of hops to the USA.
Regarding the fact that we are not running over HTTPS I want to let you know that we are working on that but it’s kind of difficult to move about 20 subdomains, all of them having web apps installed and almost all of them being commercial licensed products that. It takes a lot of planning to do this. After we will move newHOST.ro on a dedicated IP (right now is running on the main server IP address) we will be able to install a SSL certificate.
We are sending the passwords directly to the client’s emails account simply because not all of them are very familiar with stuff like SolusVM and it’s capabilities and most of them appreciate the ease of access rather than having security in mind. For the tech savvies of you out there, there’s always the option of changing the root password after logging in to the SolusVM client interface.

Very good speeds from Romania to Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.
I asked for a not so common module to be loaded on my openvz, so that I could set up IPv6 via Hurricane Electric’s, Zurich PoP. This was not a problem for them.

      Hello Evgeniy,

Your ticket was send to the sales team outside the business hours. Our sales team does not work on weekends, only the tech team does.
Asking a memory upgrade from the sales team during the weekend (when you had the option to upgrade it yourself from the client panel without asking someone to do it for you) only to send a refund request 26 hours later because of your non-critical ticket was not addressed in a timely manner does make you look like a very picky client.
Nevertheless we have granted your refund.

      Thank you.
