LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Nominate and Vote for Your Favorite VPS Provider on LowEndTalk!

abdelhalim asked this question on LowEndTalk beta:

I’m interested to get a VPS box to host some git repos + probably mail server in future, and I was looking for ranking for the VPS providers mentioned on lowendtalk, but I couldn’t find any.

Can someone points me to that if it exist, or just give me recommendation for something that is reliable and not expensive?

Sorry for taking your genuine question and making it into something else, Abdel! Instead of people suggesting a VPS provider to suit his need, how about we use the voting feature on OSQA to have regular Low End VPS provider recommendations? Instead of me creating a big table and listing out hosting providers that pays me the most (hey I can see GoDaddy, BlueHost and HostGator there!) It is your turn to recommend your fellow community members a fast, stable and cheap VPS.

I am planning to run it regularly but not as often as once per month — maybe once per quarter. For now, head down to the current recommendation discussion topic, and

  • Check whether the provider has already been nominated. If it hasn’t…
  • Each individual can nominate ONE provider. Make it an “Answer” to this discussion topic. Please include
    • The name of the provider on the first line + their “low end VPS package” that you recommend (optional)
    • The reason why you wish to nominate this provider and its VPS package.
  • Discussion of that provider can be added as comments to that Answer.
  • If your preferred provider has already been nominated, then VOTE IT UP!
  • As the Answers are sorted by votes by default, the winner (most recommended provider) will stay at top.

Let’s just give this model a try first and see how it works out.

Also please DO NOT post referral/affiliation links (which is the main thing that ruins all these web hosting review sites).

You may want to make it more explicit that this is – as I infer from your words – *low end* providers/offers only. I mean, I (heart) hostingincanada.com, but they’re… pricier than Linode, actually. Which is saying something. :)

    • Oh yes. All nominations **MUST** fit into the criteria of $7/month VPS package plans, and are usually the one listed on this blog.

I nominate Hostrail, $1.20 for 128/256MB with 30G HD, can’t beat that anywhere.

Considering most providers will charge you more or less that for a single IP, $1.20 a month for that VPS isn’t bad. (Yes, there are others who charge more or less that pro-rated, but you usually have to pay a year up front – never clever with things this low-end).

Even at that price though, I couldn’t call it my favourite. Performance is awful, they barely work at all.

Sincerely, I considered my hostrail VPS, maybe not for the performance, (you can use that machine for other purposes) but their support is REALLY good, they always answer my tickets really fast, and never had a problem when activating some additional drivers/modules for iptables and tun. They are really good. I have 2 power units xD

Yes, hostrail support is fast and the attitude is very good. Considering the vps is only $1.2.

i think everyone who want to vote, needed to clarification their ip(s) atleast for admin.

maybe we need to add some question :
    – how long they hosted with them?
    – vps benchmark (something like wht benchmark)
    – speedtest (for US to cachefly, EU idk, Asia idk)
    – test I/O

    • That would just be “too much work”. Have fun. Put down your votes, and then I’ll sort out the mess later if there’s any suspicious activity.

    • Snape:

Benchmarks and transfer/speed/io tests are completely irrelevant to VPSes (*doubly* irrelevant to OpenVZ ones), and mostly irrelevant in general. But thanks for playing.

    • Gary:

Cachefly redirect you to the nearest server, so it’d work for EU and Asia too.

Not the fastest box I’ve been on but the most reliable. TUN/TAP was enabled on a Sunday morning at 8am Eastern time within 10 minutes of a submission of a support ticket on my other Enotch VPS.

I second the vote for Enotch — I signed up with them and another VPS a few months ago, and Enotch has been fantastic, while the other has been less so.

      Hmmm

“Each individual can nominate ONE provider”..

Well, LEA has the last word…but I learned…if someone got an extra privilege, everyone wants that extra privilege. (In any situation in the world…) =P
