There are plenty of reviews out there explaining the details, but in short, I was 0 for 3 on stable nodes with virpus, and others have reported similar results. Might be good for backup storage or something, but don’t run anything here if you need decent uptime.
That’s what I am thinking. With 50GB those are probably good as a rsync box, which you only care whether it is up when you perform the backup and when you need to do a restore.
Personally I wouldn’t even use it as a backup.
When you have IO at less than 1 mb/s, even connecting through ssh will take several seconds. And would you really trust your backup to a host where hard drive corruption is frequent?
Is that 1 MB or 1Mb? And what plan are you on? A lot of customers get the units mixed up. And we were having some connection issues with some nodes on a particular switch that has been resolved.
We are a fairly large VPS hosting provider, quite possibly one of the top 5. We manage 4 cabinets (which are pretty much full atm) worth of servers, so yes, unfortunately sever failures do happen. We provide our customers with the Central Backup tool which allows them to take their backups and have it stores on our SAN, offsite of any VPS node.
Does it really matter whether it is 1 MB/s or 1 mb/s at that point (it is whatever unit shows up on dd). At that point you have cut down a regular SATA hard drive to 1/50 of it’s original speed. This is completely unusable for any purpose other than a TCP relay.
I was also on your U-Enhanced plan, prepaid for a year, so I was not your bottom of line customer. For your information, I was on nodes ovz-mccoy, ovz-luxor, ovz-stanley. It is not a good indication if I asked to be switched for poor hard drive performance and encounter 2 nodes with sub megabyte speeds, and 1 node that had a complete hard drive failure.
Your records here http://virpus.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=3 also indicate many downtime causing problems such as blown power strips every month. You can also find angry customers on google complaining about complete hard drive failures that go beyond the timeframe of the forum.
And about the backup, I have no idea if it is working yet because it has been broken for over a month being permanently “queued”.
For almost the whole month and a half I was with virpus (recently) the backup server was offline and no backups were possible (even the OpenVZ quick backup option was disabled for no good reason).
Additionally, the support was two tiered: The first line of defense was an obvious outsourced support solution that could only do small things (boot a stuck VM, put in a RDNS entry, etc) and would ignore any questions you asked. The next level of support is best described as “please be patient” followed by a few days of frustration.
It’s a pity, that this time they do not include DirectAdmin :S
@Christian – Keep an eye out for our Christmas specials ;)
Sounds like something we’re all waiting for ;)
Thanks for your suggestion, I will keep my eyes on virpus :)
I have been a customer for other 6 months (in fact I’ve nearly made a year) on their 7 dollar a month package
My likes:
Uptime seems fair on most occassions…
My dislikes:
– Recently my ping times are >800ms from my ISP to Virpus. Ticket submitted, forward to network support and no feedback from network support as yet
– I still pay 7 dollars for the same package that is now 5 dollars. Asked Ken if I could get it for the 5 dollars – apparently I can’t, so much for loyal customer rewards.
– I find they have a lot of maintenance and server problems which you can see on their blog area. Though it has not affected me, I worry alot that one day something bad will happen.
– Never got the central backup to work for me. Got tired and never checked back.
Hi,
is that a Life Time promotion?
Virpus is a really bad company. They take a minimum of 2 days to reply to tickets and their VPSes are very slow.
Bought VPS from them like 7 days ago and connection speed was like 24kb/s when installing packages with apt-get and yum or when fetching packages with wget.
They are probably overselling like crazy.
IMO Virpus should just close down but anyway, if you wanna take the risk….
Ordered one, and, it was online in 30 minutes. Added a support ticket to setup up reverse DNS, and was done in 30 minutes. Added one more support ticket with a time question, resolved in 45 minutes. Loaded some software on the machine (actually, a LOT of software, probably, 50+ packages via an installer), network speed was very fast. So, was easily able to get my machine all set up same day. Very good experience thus far. Ping times from me to my VPS average < 30ms. Just for fun, used wget to get a centos iso file and speed averaged 2.6M/s, took 4 minutes to download a cd.
I’m glad with Virpus. The speed is just by apt-get slow but the websites come with 5 or 100Mbit (which option you choose).
Support: The technical support is very fast. I got the answer in 1-2 hour.
Billing support: I wrote a Question yesterday but I haven’t got an answer jet.
Quality: it was a damage on my VPS and all my data was lost. I make every day backup so it wasn’t problem for me. You can see in the forum how often are they have a big technical problem. So once in 4 year at a cloud. For this price with this conditions are they very-very good. Citynethost.com is maybe better but the speed is there 7-8Mbit/s.
I pretty much have similar experience to Josh, I’m glad Steve and Matthias are having good experiences. All I can say is I wish mine was the same. One thing Virpus has to its benefit is the number of years they’ve been offering VPS services.
After the end of the contract with Virpus Networks, I started receiving huge loads of spam on the e-mail I sent them… any thoughts?
Note: the e-mail is not published anywhere on the net. I don’t use it everywhere. And before the contract ended I only had 1-2 spam e-mails per day.
I’ve been using vps with different company in past 3 years.Virpus is the worst vps provider ever. stay away from them.
Why do you think they are the worst VPS provider ever?
Obviously you haven’t used RackVM :)
I was used virpus but bad service..server AMD..often died
VPS is not good, do not buy there
I went for the October offer (512mb with DirectAdmin for $36/year). At first I did have some down times.
But since almost 2 months I have no problems with them at all.
[root@host02 ~]# uptime
01:19:59 up 52 days, 11:24, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.00
On every week they restart/maintenance the servers and for hours it isn’t reacheable. DO NOT buy your vps!
The uptime maximum 10 days.
See my post above yours, I do have an uptime of more then 50 days….so stating they can’t have more then 10 days is not correct at all.
You are lucky. I’m not. My vps isn’t reacheable now again since hours. :(
We regret to inform you that Virpus has had a security breach in our network, which has caused ~19 servers to have complete or partial data loss. There is only one server that has had partial data loss.
The list of nodes is as follows:
masi
hale
anderson
george
murphy
gemini
glacier
titan
willett (partial - VM's are still running)
capricorn
clix
valarius
barksdale
robles
goss
olsen
wright
lang
royal
We know how the culprit(s) gained access and have recorded their IP's. The point of attack has been cured. Virpus will be undergoing a complete security revamp in every aspect and will bring in a third party security expert to assist.
19 servers compromised. all data lost. they’re a joke not a company.
