Virpus - $4 512MB OpenVZ VPS in Kansas City

Virpus Via this WHT offer (which Kenneth has also sent me a reminding email). Virpus has restructured their plans. Their Budget VPS plans now start at $4/month for “VM512”, or $36/year for annual payments. Here is the sign up link, and this plan comes with

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 40GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • 2 IP addresses
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers in Kansas City MO (test IP: 208.89.210.1). Comparing to their previous offer postde here, you get less burstable memory, smaller disk space but save $1/month. Virpus has been in VPS business for a while, but you’ll find people quite opinionated about Virpus here on LowEndBox (also on WHT). Comments ranging from “okay” to “definitely avoid”. They might not be in dead pool in the near future, but performance might be mediocre. I can’t back that up myself though, as last time I’ve been their customer is over a year ago.

When you open a support ticket they get back to you with “We will look in to this for you and will update you shortly.” and later ticket is closed without resolution. Definitely avoid.

      Hello,

I was able to find out your account, and can confirm that there was a lack of following up on this issue, and I do apologize for this. I will address this with our support staff to avoid this from reoccurring in the future. And just an FYI, you could always send an e-mail to the escalation email found at the bottom of any ticket to send it to an admin.

      • iKocka:

When there is an issue customer should open a support ticket, right? You always reply with initial reply such as “We will look in to this for you and will update you shortly.” and then you simply forget it. It’s not my problem that your staff is not capable of handling the support requests and I won’t be sending email to your management to get every issue resolved.

That is definitely your right as well. My response was not to argue with you… my response was to enlighten you, whether it was what you wanted to hear or not. While, yes obviously I agree that you should not have to send an e-mail for escalation, and it should just be resolved within your ticket, I am informing you that yes it is possible for a ticket to go overlooked. We have quite a few customers, and depending on what is going on, a ticket can slip under the cracks.

And I’m not sure what is meant by every issue, but you’ve only had 2 tickets opened. One handled by the billing department, and another which is the ticket in question. I don’t see how this constitutes or paints a picture that every ticket should be escalated.

  2. im sorry to say but i still have a virpus account from their last yearly promotion (it finishes around the end of this summer i think), and there isnt a day that its not down, no point using it even for a test box, also there is a difference between unmanaged and no-managed being virpus the latter, when you get hosting with virpus you are on your own, good luck! >_<

I have seen some reviews similar to ‘I need a VPS after deadly experience with Virpus’, and the likes. I stayed away at the last second. But I still think it’s useful for some tasks…. Especially at $ 4 a month means I can test with minimal loose… But still, network quality and stability of nodes isn’t proven, that’s why I’m wondering which data center they use current;y? or if they own the data center!

They are colocating at Whosaleinternet. The quality and stability of their nodes and is proven to be horrible, so why to test? Not to mention their non-existing support.

      • Virpus Networks:

Support is not ‘non-existing’ – you yourself received a response within 10 minutes, however as said above, there was a lack of followup. Frankly, we are a very large VPS provider, so sometimes these things do happen. We try to monitor tickets as much as possible to ensure it doesn’t and we have also setup escalation channels for instances such as these.

“We will look in to this for you and will update you shortly.” is not a proper reply on support request. In fact, even a kid can do this. Maybe you realized or not, but these things do happen too often. Just take a look at all unsatisfied customers spreading bad karma about your services.

        • Virpus Networks:

It is a proper reply to a ticket initially to let you know we are looking into it, however the follow ups are what matter, which I’ve already stated to you several times now that we messed up here. You’re going to have to accept this, because there is nothing more that I can tell you other than I am speaking with our support manager regarding this to prevent it from happening to another customer.

I have had a VPS through virpus for 8 months and have the old “Semi-Managed – U-Basic VPS” plan for $5 a month which had 50GB storage and 1.5 TB transfer. They have had major outages and customer data losses while I have had the service.

My real problem with the service is that they claim support for Arch Linux and they let you install it into your VPS but it does not work. As soon as you update the Arch install the VPS will not boot or allow login. I have contacted support multiple times and they always just say reinstall your VPS. That is not a fix. Every time you reinstall and update it bricks the VPS. The reinstall your VPS email seems to be the extent of their service. They need to stop saying they support this distro if it does not work!

I am on lowendbox to find a new VPS

Had a VPS with them last year for like 6 months. It wasn’t that good, although my node wasn’t down as much as others, the support sucked. As others said, they would be like “We’re looking into this” in like the first hour of ticket submission and the “answer” to the ticket will come like 7-8 hours later!

This happened even when they offer first month free management!

I’ve had a virpus box since December of last year. Never really had problems with it except maybe once or twice someone killing I/O. dd results are around ~40 MB/s and it’s quite consistent, just about what I need and nothing more.

I never really liked their automated backups that would kill the node at midnight for two or three hours but now that’s been resolved (or so it appears).

Their network blend is quite good, and most files download at more than 9 MB/sec.

Currently, I have 99.95% uptime for the past 30 days (according to pingdom) and 63 days of uptime on the VM itself.

Finally, their support does take a day to get a response, or at least the last time I opened a ticket which was over 3 months ago.

    Thank you,

I responded to my own ticket once and got this message… Auto response is not a real response. I have yet to get an answer to the speed problem… oh, asked them why it wasnt setup in SanJose and they said it was full. Thanks for letting me know before I paid you. aaaand I am unable to login to SolusVM, the login info I got in the welcome email isnt right, the account name doesnt even exist.

I have to say that Virpus is just hands-down the worst.

Given their prices, I was not expecting much, but they still managed to disappoint.

What really cheesed me is that at one point I wanted to test out DirectAdmin so I ordered it but Virpus never delivered it.

Virpus took my money sure enough and then never provided DirectAdmin.

I emailed a number of times and got the same baloney responses above.

After a number of lame responses (and no responses), I just walked away.

What was I going to do, hire a lawyer over $5.00?

I use low end VPS all of the time for development from places like thrustvps and they are decent enough. You get what you pay for…

Further the lies and information you left out further prove why we don’t want to d business with you.

Coming here and posting outright lies is not a good idea

      July 13, 2011 @ 11:18 pm | Reply
      • Okay, assuming you are right and this person lied, I might be out of place but just to give some further insight, the reason people get upset and threaten legal action is if you waste their time, claim something you cannot provide, aren’t responding to them in a manner they feel is deserving of them or something similar (I am not saying that this is exactly what you are doing but I’m giving reasonable answers for why people would behave “irate”). I don’t think people are out to buy VPS from you for the purpose of coming here to bash your company name and product. I said this before and I’ll say it again, its about the service and what people expect from you.

I trust that you will not take this post as an attack to your name and brand of which I am a customer of. I have seen that you guys have been making a better effort to respond to tickets more insightfully (sometimes) so I must give you kudos for that.

I just had a problem with my vps (not virpus fault but their job to fix it). Their max time reply after me messaging them was 1 ( one ) hour ( yes , it was required for me and virpus to communicate a few times to solve it ) and , including my 10 hours of not answering them the problem was fixed in about 24 hours from my opening ticket (and it was not one easy-to-solve-problem , at least in my opinion)

I am really happy with them and i do recommend virpus to everyone.

    As l already said before ( here ) :
Thank you Virpus!Thank you Virpus!Thank you Virpus!

Take virpus as a ”toy”, and to learn cpanel and test stuff. But dont use it for serious stuff..

Not sure where all these negative comments come from. Prolly other VPS providers hating on their steal of a deal at $4 a month. I have 6 VPS’s with them and am more than happy. Seriously at $4 a month why are you complaining if it’s a bit slow? A+ in my book.

    • Hehe. I actually have a Virpus VPS that I use for tracking the low end providers. 26 days of uptime so far. The only issue I had was with clock synchronization and it was resolved within a few hours. Performance is all over the place but it’s not an important node for me so I have no complain.

I am sure many others have very different experience (some might be caused by very different expectation).

Well down 13 hours, tickets are just being marked as “in progress” and no replies.

How long can these jokers go on ignoring their customers?

    August 15, 2011 @ 12:05 pm | Reply
  33. Really pleased with the VPS, however ticket replies are really bad. Especially asking for information about “downtime” and “compensation” for downtime. My ticket has been waiting 6 days to be answered. Also been blocked from Facebook wall, because I asked them to answer my ticket. Really bad customer service Virpus!!!!

    • Yes they really need to take things more seriously and it reflects badly on the management of Virpus but it seems they really don’t care. I think they really need to educate themselves by taking some business related courses like Marketing 101.

  34. Just brought this plan, first VPS so I can’t comment on anything really. But, it all seems pretty good. They seem to have more downtime than other providers according to reviews but they also have fast servers. You get what you pay for and this is value for money.

    • Sorry to say that I can confirm this and lower IO on my VPS as well… decided to turn the box into a secondary server due to the overall low performance especially from IO aspect :(

I wouldn’t purchase a VPS from Virpus again after feeling the sting of 20-90 second save times within my favorite console text editor ( 10KB file? REALLY? ), random network dropouts and stunning lack of IO.

They can’t be all bad, given the positive reviews. However, I have two friends who I recommended to Virpus due to how cheap they were ( given that they were willing to try and resolve the issues I had, even though they kept coming back ) who had identical results.

I’ve moved to another provider and I’m quite happy,
    Good Luck folks.

    • Unfortunately I have to agree with what you are saying here. It’s not rocket science though, if they provide better service, they’d probably have a better branded name, more pleased customers and therefore more recommended customers. I really cannot understand how they operate like this. At the same time, once in a while they do provide a meaningful answer to support tickets but I hate it (in general) when tickets are replied without an explanation of what caused the issue. After all, we are human beings and more human beings like closure.

I tried BuyVM, SolusVM, CHVPS but Virpus is the best for me. I have a VPS since 15 months. My uptime is very good (>99,6%) and the support is very fast. They has same security problems but the speed, price and services are the best for this price.

They are since 6 years on the market.

    • After much complaints and finally moving over to another VPS provider, this is the current IO on my no-traffic VPS at Virpus, the performance looks surprisingly good, I’ll keep monitoring it before I decide if I’m going to switch back over to this server as a live server.

Personally i have an awful service from virpus. I signed up to this offer only to find a VPS with massive connectivity issues. Their technical staff clearly didn’t understand the issue, and didn’t seem capable of reading the content of emails fully. They also seem to like sending you passwords in plain text. For these reasons i canceled my account within 24 hours of opening in, and will never go back. I recommended you DO NOT use virpus.
