Via this WHT offer. Virpus, with its new motto “We virtualize servers. It’s what we do. =)”, is offering 15% off recurring discount on annual payments of their Basic and Enhanced VPS, from their Budget VPS line of products. Use GreenMarch2011 as coupon code and set the Billing Cycle to 12 months to get the discount. You don’t really get 50% off as the WHT post has claimed though. You get 15% off on top of 35% off from annual payments, but rather 44.75% off. At the end you pay $46.41/year (~$3.72/month) for the following VPS:
- 512MB guaranteed/2048MB burstable memory
- 50GB storage
- 1000GB/month data transfer
- 2 IP addresses
- OpenVZ/SolusVM
- Free DirectAdmin (when you put “FREE DA” in the comment of order form)
Virpus have servers with Wholesale Internet in Kansas City MO, utilizing Level3, Cogent and Hurricane Electric networks (from Infrastructure page). They have been around for a while with mixed review. Although you’ll probably see all the negative feedbacks here on LowEndBox (from their previous offers here for example). They also have their share of security issues earlier this year. Has anything changed over the last 3 months? Anyone care to share?

Wrong information, lowendboxadmin. You can just choose DirectAdmin from the control panel option without additional charge
When prepaying 6 months on any of our plans, you get DirectAdmin free of charge. When prepaying on our Elite or Advanced plans (both budget and premium), you can get cPanel free of charge.
No promotion code needed. However, if prepaying and wanting cPanel, select “No Thanks” for your control panel and note in the order comments that you want cPanel. If wanting DirectAdmin, select DirectAdmin from the control panel options.
Alright. Thanks. I was simply quoting what was in the WHT offer, which says
I’m hosting some websites on their 512MB VPS with free DirectAdmin. Nothing special.
good speed…
and good I/O :shakehand
Mediocre I/O I’d say.
They only have “good speed and good I/O” because they lost a bunch of customers due to the data-loss and thus audience due to over a week in downtime for most people.
Is there any file that i could download to test their network speed on my area ?
Looks like they lost hell of a customers because of their problems with security and now trying to get some quick $$
I wouldn’t host with them looking at their hopeless support and rudeness answering threads on WHT
I agree on being rude. I asked couple of questions and at the end, Ken refused to offer me services because I asked questions regarding their data center, backups, support SLA etc
To date, I cannot place an order with Virpus, glad to be banned :D
Sounds like the typical case of verpes. :)
I agree on support…I just asked a few times to fix that damn CentOS 32bit Minimal template that doesn’t works…and after months it still there…
That is not why you got banned. You got banned because you were being impatient, expecting responses in 10 minutes before you ask for updates. We find this unreasonable, and decided that long term, it will not be in our best interest to do business with you.
Ken, I have all the threads with my in my email, you want me to post it somewhere online for others to view?
I never complained about your reply time / support-response.
You are free to do as you please, just like we have the right to deny your order. If we feel (for any reason) it is not in our best to do business with someone, that is our right to deny that business. Regardless of what you post, it wouldn’t matter. If anything it would prove our point of you 1. Not reading our website or ticket confirmation e-mails, in which you kept updating the ticket asking for an update, even though it was the weekend and 2. During business hours, asking for an update within 10 minutes of your last post, which is not reasonable, and is not our ideal customer we’d like to have. And for the sake of clarifying, this was not a VPS that was in production. We denied the order before the customer could pay.
Wow, that clearly tell that I was wrong when I posted this on WHT
“…nice to know that Virpus is trying to improve themselves”

FAIL
Yes, yes, fail… now move on.
LOL, I already moved on. See, this is the kind of attitude that the poster “flapjack” talked about and countless other have the same opinion.
All the best for the future of your company
I’m sorry but I’m not sure what you want me to say… if I continue to respond to each and everything you post, we’ll be going forever, so the best advise I can give you is… move on.
Wish you the best as well :)
Virpus? No thanks…
Ken says the support is in house or something, when someone mentioned it was outsourced to India. I have no problems with India but I think it is outsourced there! Would make sense, due to the low quality of support response and the support barley having much power.
After making the mistake of signing up for one of their Xen plans a few months ago I browsed the web and comments after not receiving any service and found they are known to take people’s money and to provide horrible service. I never experienced their service so I can’t confirm that part, but they did take my money and had the nerve to lie about it to PayPal.
My initial payment was refunded after days of not receiving the VPS, but two subscription payments went through and I only received notification after the second one. They ignored the requests in the ticket and by e-mail for a refund and even escalated the PayPal dispute that “we’re assuming this is for a service that was provided” (when they obviously know otherwise by their own system).
Virpus is known to take money from customers by also falsely claiming TOS violations, and aside from that is known to lose customer data and be extremely unreliable.
I would not recommend Virpus see this link with full proof: Virpus Steals Money From Customers
Stay away from Virpus :)
Virpus said they support PPTP VPN on their OpenVZ VPS on WHT but when I request to enable PPTP and got reply that PPTP is not supported on OpenVZ box. Virpus is lier.
I quited after their data loss accident.
this is the thread, they replied that PPTP is OK.
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1001005#post7140178
That was in November of last year when we stated that. After realizing the customizations that have to be made to accommodate it, we decided to not allow it any longer.
PPTP does not work on OpenVZ. It’s clearly stated in the OpenVZ documentation.
You would need to use OpenVPN.
I’m sure there are ways around it, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend going with a host that uses “hacks” to enable PPTP or other services that OpenVZ clearly does not support.
Wikipedia says otherwise
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenVZ#Limitations
I guess we must enable nothing but hacks to get all of the features we offer :)

I am writing in German now.
I used their vps last year for about 2 or 3 months and Virpus is the WORST VPS provider that i ever seen. You only get SPEC for what you paid but never get any service like uptime, support, security etc. I lost all my customers and all my data. DON’T USE THEM!!!
I apologize you got caught up in the hacking a few months back. We’ve since made changes in our network setup, which has been working excellent. Such problems will not occur in the future.
I signed up and started using my VPS, about 5 min into using it it turned off. Then I have to wait 5 min for it to come back online. Then 15 min later it goes down again! I try to get help form tech support but they only tell me they can login when I asked them to fix the downtime issue. They didn;t even try and clarify the problem they just assumed I meant login. The hardware wa great for the 15 mins at a time I could use it but servers should not be up only at 15 min intervals! So I got a refund which they seemed to nto want to do until I issued a claim with paypal. My advice is to stay away from virpus, they constantly have issues.
Do they have a firewall installed by default? If they do, you might be getting temp-banned for whatever reason.
This hoster is a deseaster. First my VPS was deleted, then I had to wait 4 weeks until it was available again, of course, without data. The support is incapable and the performance is extremely bad. Minutes long dead times are not unusual, reboots are often.
I apologize you got caught up in the hacking a few months back. We’ve since made changes in our network setup, which has been working excellent. Such problems will NOT occur again in the future.
This host looks scary when I read the comments.
Virpus is the worst host I have ever used. Stay far far away and don’t waste your cash.
I used to resell their servers. They aren’t that bad. I mean sure, they oversell sometimes but in the end, you get for what you pay for.
It’s a budget brand, pay for premium if you want premium.
I entered GreenMarch2011 code and seems expired.
Yes, it expired Friday I believe. It was a limited promotion.
I entered the code today and it accept after a few minutes it expired.
I’ve been with Virpus for quite a while. In my opinion they are an acceptable low-cost provider. As someone else mentioned, if you want premium, you’re probably looking to pay a significantly higher price. On the low end of the spectrum, Virpus works fine.
Chief complaints are the inability to contact them via phone, and the only reason that would be important is that they don’t appear to effectively monitor their servers. Typically the first notice they seem to have of a server going down is when I submit a ticket to them.
Also, make sure you size your VPS appropriately from the beginning, as Virpus is unable to upgrade your VPS after the initial installation.
Over all, uptime is pretty good, and service is good.
For the record, the server I am on was not affected by the hack attack earlier this year…I’m sure that would have flavored my opinion somewhat!
Hi all,
I have been with Virpus for awhile now. I was affected during the time they got hacked. Pretty much lost everything but i have strongly believed that it is not entirely their fault. Being an admin myself, i believe hacking can happen even to the best.
Overall, support and uptime have been good. I have little problem running my stuffs on their vps. Consistent network connection too.
I am a user from Singapore, have friends who ordered VPS somewhere else, yes they are getting good bandwidth for the first month but subsequent it was throttled down pretty bad, that somewhat did not happened with my virpus VPS which made me still recommend them to my friends.
However, it would probably take awhile for Virpus to recover their reputation. Even my friends knew about the event where data is loss.
Keep up the good work Virpus and all the best. Keep it cool too =). It will take awhile for those affected to cool down.
I’ve been with virpus for about 6 months now and while it started off a bit rocky, it’s now very stable and fast. My vps is hosting 3 websites and I am just about to pay for another month.
I had bad service, bad connection , and bad support.
But on a plus note, when it worked it worked fine.
Virpus? I actually think that this man IS the most brave provider on earth. As you see easily, going and coming through websites and forums, for nothing but stabbed with more and more and more knifes, no one-man company on earth can resist even quarter that much of pressure, he must be a unique man. And yeah, I too had a VPS with them, during first minutes of getting it I found the RAM showing -looks an error in Solus VM- like 7.99 GB out of 8 GB with red indicator, which is clearly the TOTAL node RAM, I was able to face that overselling-disaster in first minutes, thanks to SolousVM that showed for a while the whole node RAM usage, as my RAM, even Solous is playing against them, how bad. And yeah, I felt bad about the so called 2 GB brustable RAM at that point. Anyway, I continued with them for several months before leaving in the first chance I had, because I continued to feel bad, or at least it is coming in the way, all mostly out of the first minutes experience. Even though the VPS worked really OK as I remember, speed was normal, for some reason I didn’t monitor this VPS closely!! maybe I didn’t wanted to feel sick, and didn’t monitor downtime/lost packets as well, but I’m sure from many reviews that it must have been not that good during the 2 or 3 months I had VPS with them. And I hope this not by any how make you frustrated mr. KEN! All of best luck.
I can see the total RAM too…8gb…they can at least upgrade to 12gb or 16gb.
IMHO they will not upgrade their systems…
@Null,
Why upgrade the ram?
Less ram = less overall customers on the node, which means better overall experience for you.
IMHO i would not update the systems, and coming from the experience that i rarely run any of our Xen Nodes over 8-12gb of ram.
Those companies who boast that their servers have 32/64GB of RAM, it isn’t too long before they oversell CPU.
He must be meaning that they will oversell normally as if they have 16 or 24 GB of RAM, while still leaving it as low as 8 GB. If no overselling takes place and we are sure of it, we wouldn’t complain about a node with 8 GB.
I too have a vps with virpus. I was not on a node that was hacked.I have had a few tickets with them. Most of them were resolved withing 6 hours. Ken has escalated a ticket of mine once because of a high load issues. He has offered to run some diagnostics the next time this happens, I didn’t even have to ask. P.S I did solve the load issue myself, before the server was shut down again.
I would recommend virpus to anyone. Just remember that it is a budget service. But has been a solid service for the three months that I have used them.
When it’s running well it is very good, but I observed outage problems in the evening (typically in the 6 to 8 pm time range, pacific time). One outage was extended, perhaps 6 hours or so. I asked what was going on in a trouble ticket on two occasions but the replies were not responsive to my questions. He just said that it was running again.
I made one special request, which was to ask him to add a DNS zone to his BIND installation for my root domain. It wasn’t that big of a deal, it was just going to get me up and running a little faster. Unfortunately his reply was that he couldn’t do it, but he wasn’t clear why. Like I said, it wasn’t that big of a deal because I had my own BIND installation running before long, but I was puzzled as to why he couldn’t just add a zone for my domain.
I wasn’t completely happy with the billing arrangement either. I didn’t intend to renew after one month because of the reliability problems, but my card was charged 9 days before the renewal date without warning. There was no pre-billing invoice to let me know it was going to happen, they just did it.
It’s unfortunate that he has the reliability problems that he’s having. The equipment seems to be adequate, at least in regard to available memory and cpu when the system is up. I wish I knew more about his reliability problems and whether they are likely to be resolved eventually, but I’m completely in the dark about that because of the unresponsive ticket replies.
Just as a note though, Virpus should actually be credited for having DirectAdmin so cheap with totally affordable plans, and even Cpanel has a good offer too. So for anyone with limited/basic host needs, they can be even perfect to many!!! specially if planning to always use DirectAdmin, where it will be more than easy to have a DirectAdmin backup in Virpus and expand to another host in future, even though the advance payment rule associated with DirectAdmin offer can cause some lose when migration is needed. The uptime isn’t really a big/noticeable issue after all and a decent uptime can be achieved in many times I believe. And performance as I mentioned can satisfy at least basic/limited uses.
The support of this vps provider is poor.
I send a email and not reply, i contact by online chat and are slow to respond.
I had a good feeling with Virpus.
1) it’s the cheapest VPS i found on the Internet
2) When i set it up i had to configure openvpn (not working by default)
– i opened a ticket, 10 minutes after all the actions were realized!
After that i had an issue with the remote control, i asked them about it and the same day they provided me a solution.
To compare i am working for professionnal usage with company i paid 1500 EUR/month and don’t have that quality of service…
And there i pay 4USD/month!
3) The only “issue” i had with them was about the payment, i just wanted to do automatic renewal and they took 3 weeks to answer me that the renewal was automatic :)
To resume i don’t know what experience you had with them.
But actually they rock!
Virpus thank you for your job!
