SetupLink - $4 128MB OpenVZ VPS in Germany

SetupLink Via this WHT offer. SetupLink is a “growing hosting company with amazing customer support and top quality servers” and with 8 years of experience — although domain was only registered in March last year and all contact details are hidden behind WHOIS privacy. They do have a very beautifully designed Joomla website though, and some nicely priced VPS. Starting from $4/month (Order link), you get

  • 128MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 1TB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers are with Hetzner in Germany, but their website is hosted with WebNX in Los Angeles. Support number on the page points to Towson Maryland — although it could just be a VoIP DID. Adjacent domain name servers (d’oh) + problematic DNS settings (fixed) + no MX record (fixed). Sounds like they still have a bit of work to do.

Update: Matt from SetupLink has informed me that some issues relating DNS have been fixed.

hello, i hope rapidleech is allowed
    is allowed?

  3. @Above – I doubt that RapidLeech is allowed as it can use a lot of resources, bandwidth can’t be tracked from it.

Of course rapidleech bandwidth can be tracked. Anything that consumes bandwidth can be tracked.

A lot of providers don’t touch rapidshare because there’s a lot of illegal content on Rapidshare.

The guy who asked could always just read the T&C on the website to find out though…

  5. If it can be tracked then the majority of hosts won’t have the software or systems in place to track bandwidth used by downloading the files via GET.

  6. I should also mention I am talking about the shared systems.

So first it can’t be tracked, then it can be tracked, now you say you were talking about shared hosting. On a VPS-centric site?

  8. Yes, most VPS providers allow for the majority of things, including RapidLeech. A comment was made regarding shared hosting and then RapidLeech – I assumed the commenter was on about shared hosting. I am unsure if there is a method to track bandwidth used by GET/WGET on cPanel based systems, the majority of shared servers won’t have this installed.

    Thanks,
    Jack.

I assume ikr. was pointing out that they’re one of the hosts who promise unlimited everything, which of course isn’t possible. Sure, that’s their shared hosting, but if they oversell so badly (potentially infinitely, if you take their offer at face value) in that side of the business, how many people are they cramming onto a VPS node? :/

Any type of traffic can be tracked. Using MRTG in combination with iptables rules it’s easy to track HTTP traffic and to my knowledge the GET/WGET you’re pointing too is basicly HTTP traffic.

  11. Yes but that will track it for the whole server and not a single account.

@Jackk: this can be done per VPS

  13. we do not allow torrents or rapidleech.

We rent servers from datacenters around the world. We have a specific way we are setting up our MX records and DNS on this LA server right now. The server we are selling from in Germany has everything working correctly.
WE host alot of large clients from the USA, so it makes sense for us to be hosted in the US.

Yes the support number is in towson maryland, this is where I am working from.

And yes we are selling unlimited shared hosting, but this does not mean you can abuse our resources.

  17. setuplink:

SetupLink stopped accepting payments and the servers were canceled and shut down. Before your services went offline, you were provided with 3-4 months of free hosting. During this time you could have made a backup of your site or transferred to a different host.
