LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

2Host - $4.04 128MB Xen VPS with 2nd Month Free

2Host Tom from 2Host emailed me to about their current special promo on WHT, as well as their previous exclusive offer for LowEndBox readers. Same deal — use promo code LEB10TB to get 10% off recurring discount on their Xen SATA VPS. You can get their A-Class (ordering link) for $4.04/month after the discount, and you get

  • 128MB memory/256MB swap
  • 5GB storage
  • 10TB/month data transfer on Gbit
  • Xen/SolusVM

Asheville NC servers as usual. And read our previous post for discussions on what you can do with this stupid large amount of data transfer quota. Moreover, Tom is willing to offer LowEndBox readers 2nd month free — just contact them via support ticket, and mention their promotion here.

My Xen VPS with 2Host from their old offer must have been the low end box that I have kept for the longest time (since May 2009), and currently generating all the screenshots you see here (via a modified version of PyWebShot) and a few other things. Uptime 115 days. Maybe I am just lucky :)

It isn’t their best price for this VPS.

They had a 128mb VPS for $3.50 half a year ago.

    This deal isn’t as good.

They seem to like to increase the bandwidth knowing that nobody will use it and use that as an excuse to jack their prices.

Also, none of their IPs resolve to Asheville anymore. They started resolving to St Louis or Netherlands a couple of months ago. They say their servers are still in Asheville but haven’t explained why the IPs won’t resolve to Asheville anymore.

Just dropped my account because of weird things happening with my Debian server – Midnight Commander commands functioned inconsistently, could not run orphaner. Now with newly launched VPS plans from IGXHost.com, another Asheville “ubercenter” provider.

Been using 2Host for several months now and while the uptime is great, the network fluctuates too much for my liking. Its very annoying to SSH in because commands lag up to several minutes every so often. I have another box in Chicago which is further from my location that is a lot more stable.
Not sure if the poor network is a result from their insane bandwidth overselling or netriplex just simply sucks. Any other Xen providers for $10 ? =D

They’d probably find an excuse to cut you off/slow you down if you used anywhere near 10TB, regardless of how legitimate it may be. I’d rather a provider be honest with their allowances rather than exaggerate or, at times, outright lie about them.

But that’s just MY opinion. I could be wrong.

    @ A.

Have you tried them?? You can reach 400Mbps easily!

You can try their cheapest package @ $4 to test it out and use all the 10TB and post your review.

I’ve used up over 8TB traffic last month (private torrents) without issues!

I’m already a client for a long time.. Tim & John are great people to deal with!

I signed up about a month ago for the $4.04 deal, my first VPS, and I’m very happy so far.

They really need to work on the website and the initial signup process though. After I ordered, I was kind of “OK, now what”. Until I checked my email, and all the details are in there – but there’s nothing to indicate that is the case, and nothing on the website to tell you what the process is going to be before the fact. Even so, my VPS was ready just a minute or two after completing the purchase.

Also the whole payment thing could be smoother. It goes month by month, and you get an invoice in advance which you have to pay, though I’m not quite sure how yet, as I haven’t paid one yet. It would be better to have a paypal subscription or something.

I haven’t needed support yet, so can’t comment on that.

One question I might bother them with, but perhaps people here know; If I get a VPS with double the RAM, is this likely to mean double the CPU as well? Indeed, how do I measure current CPU utilization, since ‘top’ just shows 0% for everything. And how to I measure absolute performance, to compare difference sized VPS?

    August 16, 2010 @ 11:36 am | Reply
  19. Jack, 99% of the web hosts utilize WHMCS, a web hosting management software. Hence its not 2Host’s fault but the software itself.

The only point of measuring performance I have is unix-benchmark
Here is a tutorial I wrote on how to do that. But remember, your VPS should have no additional software installed to measure performance.

  20. Jack:

Thanks Asim, your tutorial looks very useful.
I’m also interested in measuring my current utilization, ie is my app cpu-bound at the moment, and would it benefit from a bigger VPS (even though I don’t need any more memory of disk space). ‘top’ shows 0% for everything.

    August 16, 2010 @ 12:39 pm | Reply
  21. Jack:

On closer inspection, ‘top’ shows 100% idle, by a combination of my crap testing and assumtions, and my app being much more efficient than I credited. I’m guessing you get the full crack at the cpu if no-one else is using it.
So, another gold star for 2host, as my machine seems much faster than I would expect a 128mb system to be.

Been with them for a couple months now since the last promo was offered. Support has been pretty good considering the price of the VPS, but there have been a couple outages both of which were due to a hardware failure on my box. The outage that was due to a failed network card lasted nearly 6 hours and it was only after opening a ticket that I knew what had happened. Tom is pretty good about answering all tickets (3 in my case so far) quickly. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the network quality sorta sucks. ssh can be very unresponsive at times and latency is all over the place. And no, it is not my side. For what I am paying it is a so-so deal since I don’t even begin to scratch the 10TB bandwidth allowance.

  23. 1. Price: best, considering the config of my VPS

    2. Network: high latency in some places with high packet loss. It really depends on the location and your network provider.

    3. Support: excellent. They reply my tickets within a few hours.

    4. Complaint: 2host charge me about $2 for simply requesting to change payment interval from monthly to quarterly.

Summery: Good and recommendable. Would be divine if it can improve its network speed and stability.

They hardly have any 32 bit distributions available and the one that is available — Debian 32 bit, won’t let me log in after the rebuild. I have no such issues when using the Debian 64 or Ubuntu 64 bit.

After I created a ticket to resolve this issue, I was ultimately ‘forced’ to choose 64 bit as they keep telling me 32 bit distributions have ‘compatibility issues’.

Correction: I should have said hardly have any 32 bit images for Debian or Debian-based distributions.

the networks maximum speed is 100-300K/s (4mbps) really slow.
    Support is horrible.
I cant even run a backup or move to another server cause network is so slow.
the technical support dont know anything, they are not linux experts.

Right now as I type this my server is down. waiting for the ticket reply.

my biggest mistake signing up with them.

    really regret.
