LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

30mb.co.uk - $3 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Netherlands

Updated July 2011 — Website has not been resolving since 4 July, where the service has been inactive since February. Dead pool.

30MB.co.uk 30mb.co.uk specialises in free cPanel shared hosting and free OpenVZ VPS — however after more than 480 free VPS they are now closing down the sign ups, according to an email from Danny. Instead, they are now offering cheap VPS for $3/month with the following spec:

  • 256MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 250GB/month data transfer on 10Mbps
  • OpenVZ

Servers will be in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and this package can be ordered with this link. 30mb was funded by Danny from UK back in early 2008, and their website is hosted on a cPanel box which also hosts both name servers. There are much to say about this “provider”, Jason S (whose previous “business” also got featured on LowEndBox a few times), and any possible conflict with SimplexWebs (who was featured here a few days ago but I had to pull the post). Anyway. I will leave you with this forum thread on ClubHabbo Forum instead.

  1. I don’t think the comments you have made are fair LEA, at all.

We are the hottest active thread on lowendtalk for our free vps and people are loving them. The link to a gaming forum – pointless, if they want to play hell, let them. It doesn’t portray the way 30mb conducts itself or operates, at all.

    • Huh? Which comment did I make that you think is unfair? I have already left out all the “opinions” and merely linked to a popular forum with an “interesting” culture.

I hate when American kids talk in ub3rw3bz talk and think they are better then everyone else. Referencing to that awful post. I also hate when people post MSN logs, because other members don’t know the previous ‘environment’ between the two chatting, and the OP usually did something to wind the other participant up way before. Plus it’s an invasion of privacy.

    • Just because you offer a free service doesn’t mean much.

If Quickweb/buyvm/ramhost all started offering offering free VPS’s, LEA would need an actual dedicated server to host the site :P

by the way, I did sign up when they offered free VPS. but i never get any VPS from them, not even an explanation why, and I don’t know why. and i don’t really care actually, But until now, they still send me emails regarding unrelated things about their service. I am saying unrelated because I don’t even have an active service from them.

they are wasting their time and resource (bandwidth etc) sending emails to people who are not even their customer.

        • You have no clue who ‘we folk’ are. Just look in LowEndTalk – we’ve been supplying almost 500 free VPS since the start of December with great success.

This is actually (with thanks to LEA) tarnishing the reputation of a project which I sponsor/co-fund which Dan has built up for 2 years now. It’s unfair on Dan – say what you want to me, but don’t drag his project in to this.

I’m rereading the thread right now yet again. May I suggest that you do as well?

I pointed out how your policies and actions violate your own ToS. You may have also missed the folks posting in there about getting ToS’ed without any notice. Granted they may have been doing something wrong but not telling them what the issue is but the way you do it isn’t ethical. And not to follow up to public complaints tarnishes your own reputation.

Any host that doesn’t follow it’s own policies really can’t be trusted.

        • In the event of an account suspension – we send notices with reasons included – that’s for existing services setup and suspended/declined. Reasons are always outlined.

It is however, not always possible for us to notify users (especially with the free VPS) about order declination. If someone is failing to read and apply themselves to our ToS – it adds burden to the project.

30mb is about delivering completely non-for-profit service (same with this – we make no profit and we don’t intend to). It’s very difficult for the people involved to contact every individual order when we are receiving between 250 and 500 signups per day, each of which need manually verifying.

In the instance of a paid service, more discretion will be taken, for sure. With our free services, it’s very hard to meet the demand and contact every declined signup. Sure, we’re working on that fact and we’re bringing in volunteers to assist with those signups.

We are here to deliver a non-for-profit, top quality and high uptime service. Not many paid hosts invest the same in to their setups as we are right now. With the support of users, we can continue to do so.

          Thanks.

      Arguments, etc most likely.

Well, Jason has owned many other VPS services in the past and I have to say I’d be very wary of this service. Many of his past projects have followed the path of “make money as fast as possible and then sell up”.

Supporting 500 FREE VPS’ must cost a lot of money and I can’t see the company being able to support them no matter what Jason counters with.

As far as I remember, Jason tried to offer good services. However, after a few months, he turned around and sold his business.
Because of that free vps offering from him looks to me like a marketing.

    • Once again – let me clear this up. 30mb IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN / WILL BE a non-for-profit operation.

To add to this – PLEASE stop tying me directly to this. I am involved with the sponsorship and funding of 30mb – but not the ownership. Please remember this.

The free VPS is not ‘marketing’ – it’s just 30mb doing what it does best (giving free hosting products) but going that little step further. The reason behind these $3 VPS (which are 100% non-for-profit) is this – 30mb set a cap of 500 free VPS’ and we’ve filled them and we will only continue to offer them if someone cancels theirs. But the demand is still there and rather than shutting off the ability to offer free VPS – we figured we can still offer these, but at a non-for-profit level and continue to operate in the way that we do.

Please understand this. No marketing ploys, no business mechanisms – the ‘business model’ is all about being non-for-profit. 30mb does and probably always will make a ‘loss’, which is subsidized by funding via sponsorships and user donations.

      Thanks.

Why don’t you just slap donate button if you really want to be non-profit therefore people will stop accusing the free vps as a marketing ploy :)

What if I could get a “Free” VPS?
        1. I would not have hosted my site beacuse –
        a. it is going to expire in 6 months (paid-service=more-alternatives)
        b. Stability and uptime has never been into focus -> Issue for serious use
        c. OpenVZ in a unreliable server with 0 background is a potential risk.
        2. I could use it for experimenting and possible I could “waste” the resource for most of the time (idle not experimenting time)
        3. DDoS? Not for me. May be good for some ppl to try out.
        4. Proxy? yes. I could misuse it.

  16. its really a shame, I was not able to sign-up with my gmail address while I could use a fake Email ? pretty strange why they 30mb.co.uk do not allow GMAIL account who created this garbage rule, anyways this is about web hosting.

” We are the hottest active thread on lowendtalk ” that is true but its also true on the 30mb forums you have very little active discussions about the services you provide. I’m level3 on the 30mb forums. from what i can tell not many users are even bothered to have discussion on the forums, they say 500 VPS are provided for free and are all taken, but the most interesting thing about this is that not a single user are on the official forums, how can that be ? over 500 active users of free vps, but none are having discussions. ?

so i’m forced to say, this is just hyper active talk, its probably around 2 to 3 users whom actually are getting a free vps, i say this mainly because of the missing users on the forums under VPS thread.

i can’t say much about 30mb VPS hosting or their actual hosting service such as speed ping etc, because i never had a chance to experience it yet. but anyways

just thought ill share my opinion, because this is democracy lol

Really fast for me (i live in europe) and great disk speed. The free package was a 128MB, but it’s fast and stable, lots better than the 2PU node from hostrail i have. So I suppose this offer with 256MB will perform even better.

Seems poor to me to do that, but in general, speed is orite, setup was a good days wait though, which I did not like.

Their cancelling ALL their VPSs in March for everyone, another one going in the dead pool. I wouldn’t even mind paying to keep my free VPS going, but they said it will still be canceled.

I just knew this would be the outcome that’s why I didn’t pay much attention towards them in the forums, because this is the final outcome when profiteering comes into force, they were just promoting and now all those 500 so called free users will be kicked out, I would not be surprised if they started charging in the coming weeks.

we gave to much attention to another over selling company, i will be reporting this to webhostingtalk

    • Then you really don’t know what’s going on. We are getting rid of PAID and FREE VPS. There is no profiteering what so ever.

      • @Jason ” There is no profiteering what so ever.”

you can always clear the misunderstanding with us here, or was 30mb.co.uk a front in promoting services from netdepot.com ? which now is not making zero profit so has to be killed off.

        i do love conspiracy’s :-)

        • This is nothing to do with ND? It’s just my pre-approved details on here so I post with my work e-mail.

30mb was *never* designed to make profit. There was never any bias advertising on 30mb.co.uk – only Google AdSense (at the footer of the website) and we don’t mail-blast users with any promotions for anything other than our own.

30mb.co.uk is discontinuing VPS because of the sheer levels of admin time it is requirement to deal with and handle such large quantities. I personally sponsor the website and this move was not financially in any way – this was simply so we could bring our focus back to what we’re all about – top quality free cPanel hosting.

This isn’t being killed off. 30mb.co.uk has been providing free hosting for a long time and will continue to do so.

          Thanks.

really ? It look like you’re just trying to convert FREE VPS to payed: “We regret to inform you that we must cut our free VPS for 6 months shorter than we had planned. The free VPS will now end in March as opposed to June of this year if you registered in January. You may continue to use the VPS after March 2011 if you make a contribution.

just got this in my email:
30mb has seen some dramatic changes recently which some are still ongoing and may concern you. We really do need your support during these troubled times. Please remain patient and understanding, we really do appreciate it.
    […]
    VPS End Date
The virtual private servers (VPS) are going to be ending mid March 2011 for all clients, including premium. After a recent audit, we don’t think offering this server is beneficial to 30mb for the long run. We’ve had a great 4 months offering this service but unfortunately it is time to bring it to a close.

    VPS Set Ups
Our main sponsor that provides the free vps is currently having some issues with the nodes they will be hosted on. As soon as they are made secure and up to date we will process the free vps orders. We don’t want to put virtual machines on unsecured servers!

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

  28. ” Our main sponsor ” netdepot probably is the sponsor now that they can not find any profiteering by giving free VPS servers, they will shutdown the services.

” After a recent audit, we don’t think offering this server is beneficial to 30mb ”

I don’t think 30mb had any choice because the sponsor pulled the plug its just not making any money.

am i right or what lol

  29. Good evening all

The reason behind the termination of both free and premium (take note marrco) virtual servers is I don’t see it beneficial to 30mb for the long run. 30mb was set up to provide free cPanel hosting for a wide variety of needs.

This was a joint decision by 30mb and the sponsorship, not a “pull the plug, loosing money” decision. I didn’t feel this was 30mb’s aim and it was distracting our free cPanel hosting service.

I felt the virtual servers scheme was a success for the short term. Having been introduced in December we did quite well. The scheme put 30mb ‘on the web’. For the long run, it won’t be stable and 30mb services will suffer from the virtual server popularity.

30mb is aiming for the future and to stabilise our selves we have to let the virtual servers go. Again, both free and premium. We are about to introduce our new services: forum, image and blog web hosting.

Hope this has cleared things up a bit. Feel free to pop onto our live chat and ask for Danny Johnson if you would like to discuss this further.

    Kind regards
    Danny J

  30. marrco:

all services down for 2 days now, i fired a ticket, but since i use a ‘sponsored’ VPS they answered that don’t provide support. They even said that maybe i should talk with the ‘sponsor’ (i think jason, but i don’t know who, my service, welcome mail, account etc are with 30mb.co.uk) because maybe they ‘terminated’ (all ? some?) VPS.

so this is already in the deadpool. Jan 11 – Feb 25. A quick death for 30mb.co.uk VPS service.
