Servers with Data Shack/Wholesale Internet in Kansas City (test IP: 74.91.27.90). Anyone knows why Data Shack seems to be a popular choice in Kansas City MO? Another Australia-based provider, GetMyVPS, also uses them for their Xen HVM VPS. Yes, the “Adelaide” in AdelaideHOST refers to this Australian city where Josh is based in. Domain was created in April 2011. Prior to that, according to posts against his account on WHT, Josh used to run “ceaserhosting.com” back in 2009, which has since “ceased”. Let’s hope AdelaideHOST would stick around for a bit longer.

Does Kansas City only have one public datacenter? I know here in Charlotte, NC, we have 9 datacenters last time I knew but really only one is “public” where anyone can rent space from. Most of the rest, you have to be one of the larger corporations here in town for them to pay any attention to.

In my mind, that’s leased space and not a datacenter. I know in the building I’m in, at least one floor is rented out to another company and they lease out as well.
When I see the word datacenter, I;m thinking an actual building, not space in one.
It’s another one of those words that get misused in this industry. Like bandwidth. And refunds and customer service. 🙂

Actually someone about a decade ago enclosed their back porch and made it into a small datacenter for about 100 servers. Took pictures and everything. I swore I bookmarked it but I’ve never been able to find it again. I remember the yellowish paint with white trim on the house.
Wish I could. He had some problem with the electric company over the amperage being hooked up and would love to know the reference he used to get them to pay attention and get it wired correctly.
No, but the 2 biggest (Wholesale Internet and Joes DC) are both in the same building (and just some floors beneath) – both have cheap power and BW, and sort of cheap space which makes them attractive.

Hardly. Probably one of the best in US but for customers outside it wont be so good.
HE’s really good :p Well I’m really biased, in that my ISP directly peers with them, from AUS to US excellent routes.
HE have excellent routes in various regions. here in Singapore (South East Asia) we have good routes to US via Equinix Data Center where HE have a good/consistent peering. And thanks to HE, even though our national ISP ceased providing free IPV6, HE continue providing them via the local datacenter here (Equinix) making it a good place to test and use IPV6.

First of all, thanks for the post Admin!
I believe DataShack either had their own DC or colocated in another one and now colocate partially at the old one and partially with Wholesale Internet. I’m not 100% on this but I believe I read something about that on WHT. All I know is that they are now mainly at Wholesale Internet and the connectivity is very good.
Also, CeaserHosting was a project I was running with a couple of other people about 2 years ago. AdelaideHOST is my own project so I’m not at the mercy of anyone else (and it’s definitely a long-term project).
It’s been a while since there’s been a low end Aussie VPS offer. :'( Totally understand why though, but still.
SO why do they not offer Australian based VPS to LEB readers? It may have good connectivity to Asia

Yeah, that’s a big issue. Another issue is the price of bandwidth and servers in Australia. Unless you’re a major company with a massive amount of buying power you’ll pay around $250AUD for a mid-range server (which wouldn’t comfortably run many VPS’). Add to that $1 per GB for anything over the very small bandwidth allotment and it’s impossible.
I’d love to offer an Aussie VPS but it’s not a good business decision at the moment.
No Cogent or HE in aussie land? They are usualy fairly cheap.
(This is supposed to be a reply to Daniel but it won’t let me go that deep) Nothing like that yet. There was a company called PIPE Networks here who were discussing a low-cost pipe recently but I’m not sure what’s happening with that now. Just have to wait and see, I think.
