AlienVPS - $29/Year 192MB Xen VPS in Las Vegas or New York

AlienVPS Russell from AlienVPS emailed me their latest offers, which is also listed on WHT here. Probably not as good in terms of discount as last time, you get 20% off monthly plans using promo code 20off. However the redemption here is the varieties. They now not only sell OpenVZ plans in Las Vegas (with their popular $19/year OpenVZ VPS with 192MB memory, 19GB storage and 190GB/month data), but also OpenVZ in New York with the same price, KVM in New York, and Xen VPS in both Las Vegas and New York. Their “Abduction” low end plan for Xen is $29/year, which comes with

  • 192MB memory/220MB swap
  • 9GB storage
  • 190GB/month data transfer on 5Mbps
  • Xen/SolusVM

Las Vegas test IP: 208.93.153.101. New York test IP: 173.208.58.101. Payment with credit card or your PayPal account. No refund according to their ToS, which also forbids the usual illegal stuff. IRC and game servers are permitted.

AlienVPS was started in July last year and was sold to Russell of webRulon in November last year. New York based webRulon has a small team providing Internet solutions. Non-redundant NS though on their alienvps.com domain.

  1. I signed up for AlienVPS after people appreciated their $19/mo OpenVZ plans, thought why not try the XEN yearly offer.

    • Just a piece of advice, if you want to run Ubuntu on it, try the 11.04 32bit template instead of the 10.04 LTS template. Its more stable and does not randomly eat your CPU/Memory

    Also have my NY openvz, strangely it gets some node restarts here and there, but overall performance is better then what I had with buyvm. Also have 5mbps capped pipe, so no use from testing speed :)

    Here’s the DD test.

    dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync

    16384+0 records out

    I’ve had their $19/year VPS from the previous offer for a few months. So far, so good.

    $ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync && rm -f test
    16384+0 records in
    16384+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 9.86165 s, 109 MB/s

    Speeds are great as well:

      Someone should really go after them for this, they post a New York test ip which looks to be from a really nice host with tons of providers and then you end up with a almost purely Cogent inbound/outbound budget network.

      • I’d just like to clarify that we are not trying to deceive anyone. We have two New York Datacenters, the new location went live after this post was made. Our website and all new advertisements contain both NY Test IPs. Any users with an OpenVZ plan who was setup in NY2 (non test IP) may request to be moved to NY1 (test ip).

          The offer featured at LowEndBox refers to XEN VPS:

          [Their “Abduction” low end plan for Xen is $29/year, which comes with

          192MB memory/220MB swap
          9GB storage

          Las Vegas test IP: 208.93.153.101. New York test IP: 173.208.58.101
          ]

          Your offer to move the OpenVZ VPS is nice but not related to the topic.

          Hi,

          Any clients on server-node (NY1/NY2/NY3) there will be down time tonight while we migrate the nodes to our second New York facility.

          That is correct, we are moving these server-nodes to the second New York facility.

          If you have any question’s or concerns about this please submit a ticket by logging into your client area and submitting a ticket to Customer relations.

          You can find out what server-node your VPS is on by logging into your VPS Control Panel and logging in and in the control panel you will be able to find what node each of the Virtual Servers assigned to your account are on.
