  6. Chuck:

I have been with AlphaRacks for a long time.
    Basically the service is ok.
    It’s cheap.
But most of the time, their network is slow, maybe too many customers?
So if only for web page browsing, it’s ok.
Its AUP allows VPN use, but you maybe banned if you created too many connections.
I have no idea why too many web browsing connections trigger their ban policy.
I have 2TB bandwidth and have only used few hundred MB…
The good thing is you can submit a ticket, argue with admin, and if you win, they will remove the ban. Otherwise you lose your VPS for 24 hours.
Only one bad experience is, if unfortunately your assigned IP was banned by some countries, their admin won’t give you a new IP unless you beg them.
While other VPS providers immediately give you a new IP if you submit a ticket.
I hope AlphaRacks can do better though your price is lower than other provides.

      • Not trying to play devil’s advocate here (and I can assure you we are not writing any reviews ourselves), but it can also go the other way around. In my defense I have not received a single email from someone who reported a complaint here, no one is responding or contacting me with a ticket number and their names are not even existent in our client list.

We do have some of the lowest and unprecedented prices in the market, so it makes me believe that there may be a upset competitor out there who isn’t playing fair.

    • Julian is a very tactical marketer. Just look at his posts in blackhatworld forums and the way he wrote posts just to get attention or ranking and observe the names and writing style of some of the reviewers here. They were also quick to comment. He may also be the sole tech support responding in different names himself. Just observe the style and the response time.
Now the real review: Alpharacks is good if you want it cheap and for testing non critical data. Don’t expect to utilize even much of allocated bandwidth. It’s impossible due to their firewall banning and throttling rules and overselling of their servers that bog down to crawl speed. It may gets better intermittently and most of the time more issues will arise after months of usage when you are more or less settled as a client. Don’t get me wrong. AR is definitely still a good option if you only want to use it for really low end crap and wouldn’t be bothered by occasional technical hiccups.

I am also one who had a bad experience with alpharacks.

I had a vps with for 4 months and it was quite good, so i hired another one. This was a bad move. less than one month after i hired the second one, i started having issues the whole time. My VPS are shut down at least one every 2 months for no reason. Disk is reeeeeaaaally slow. And sometimes load goes to 5 or 6 for no reason at all. Most of the time its impossible simply to log into it.

Network OTH seams to not have been a problem. All else (cpu, load, disk, random shutdowns) is.

    • Farhang, please attempt to update the repo servers to something other than the default. Through customer reports and through testing, the slow speeds you’re seeing through apt-get or through yum are due to the remote repository servers (nothing to do with AlphaRacks’ side). If you update it to a repo server that is less popular/common/used you should be seeing faster transactions on there.

    • Tobing, please attempt to update the repo servers to something other than the default. Through customer reports and through testing, the slow speeds you’re seeing through apt-get or through yum are due to the remote repository servers that are included with the operating system by default (nothing to do with AlphaRacks’ side). If you update it to another repo server that is less popular/common/used you should be seeing faster transactions on there.

    I ordered a Linux VPS Special 640MB
It is pretty slow. I ran my LAMP script with normally takes about 2 1/2 minutes to install, but it took 24 minutes to run here.

Support was quick thought. They moved me to another server, but it was still slow there. It’s not the fastest, but it works and support was quick. It would be fine for tinkering and testing stuff. I will probably just use it as a VPN.

I have been using my VPS from Alpharacks and currently heres what I can say so far… (If Alphabox wants to check my username is chiachichang on the box)

Currently using this as a Developmental Server/Backup Developmental

    Pros:
Server isnt AS BAD as most people say it is.
    Insanely cheap cost

    Cons:
Server is down sometimes. It goes offline suddenly and its impossible to access (This occurred for about 1 ish hour yesterday at 2AM EST)
Support is either incredibly helpful quick/utterly hopeless. On one ticket they performed exceptionally, on the other, it seemed like they didnt even read the ticket..

I was INCREDIBLY skeptical at first, however, It seems to have worked out.

Is it an ideal server? No. It is a cheap server and I never expected it to perform 100% flawlessly. But for its cost its already performing beyond exceptionally.

To be completely honest, if the fixed the quirks Id be willing to buy a couple more.. But at this point I am already a happy customer.

I’ve never had a vps so slow, really too frustrating it looks like the uplink is less than 1 Megabyte.

    March 26, 2017 @ 7:04 am | Reply
    • Hi Pedro,

Where are you seeing this? If this is through apt-get or yum, it is not reflective of the network speed of the AlphaRacks VPS but rather the remote repository servers, which are out of our control. If you update it to a repo server that is less popular/common/used you should be seeing faster transactions on there. Hosting our own local repository servers is on the road map for the near future as well.

You can test your network speed by running this command in SSH:
      wget -O /dev/null http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.tes

    • It is indeed a spectacular price, and we provide unprecedented prices in the hosting market. These are limited time promotions exclusively for LowEndBox. On the $8/year plans, we don’t exactly make a profit on them, but we engross the cost through our marketing budget (no worries we NEVER increase prices on renewal, your price will stay the same for as long as you keep the service).

As demand continues to rise and we are reaching the quantities we wish to sell, we will be disabling new orders for the $8/year plans soon. If you are interested, it’s not too late to order one and lock in your low price :-).

I’ve been using AlphaRacks for a few days. Support for me has been quick. They immediately upgraded the bandwidth and port speed after a ticket. I realized about a day in that I was going to need something more powerful than the 640MB. That ticket was replied to quickly and my upgrade was then processed.

The network speeds aren’t as bad as people make it out to be. For the price, this service is absolutely worth it. I use Debian for everything and one of the first things I do is change the repo using netselect. Keep in mind, Debian’s default repo is in Europe and it definitely sucks. At the very least, you should be using httpredir.debian.org to automatically pick a closer mirror.

    • Erik, thanks for the tip. That is also what we recommend, netselect is a great tool for determining the best repo servers geographically and latency wise.

Our host kernels are maintained and kept up to date with the latest RHEL6 kernel versions with KernelCare. If you are looking to run your own kernel, you can look into a KVM VPS plan at https://www.alpharacks.com/kvm

    • Most of the complaints you see regarding speed are due to the default Debian/Ubuntu repo servers being based out of Europe, if you scroll up and see above comment, Erik has pointed out using netselect as a quick workaround to adjust the repo servers to something more close geographically which will yield faster transactions with apt-get.

I am glad to hear that you are seeing great network speeds, of course network speeds will vary based on the remote server’s geographic location, network connectivity, peering, etc

I ordered the VPS on 4/01/2017 (email timestamp: Sat, Apr 1, 2017 at 12:48 AM)

I was not able to connect to the VPS to do anything even up until it was cancelled.
That is what they call services not rendered.

Please refund this, and save me a call to my credit provider to explain why it’s being reversed.

Please see our refund policy – we provide no refunds past three days.

I can only issue credit here!

@jcn50, I took screencaps of all my support staff dealings, including the refund requests and my account being removed.

I also have made a case file with all the refund and bitcoin shadiness they’ve been doing. I’ve lodged complaints with a few bitcoin establishments as well as paypal against their accounts including the 100’s of complaints and refund issues they’ve had against them over the last 18 months.

Hopefully it’ll help someone down the road.

    • exaraxe, I tried running a search for tickets of similar content however was unable to find the ticket, nor locate your account by searching your name. I also attempted to ask you to contact me in an above comment, but did not hear anything back from you.

Please send me an email at julian @ alpharacks.com with your account number/email so I can firstly validate your account and look it up. After looking it up, I will investigate the situation and provide a resolution to make both parties happy.

Either you have someone working for you who you don’t realizing is making your business terrible, or you have people working for you intentionally running the business terribly.

Either way, Joshua Collishaw was the person I was speaking to before my account mysteriously disappeared.

I’m more frustrated with the fact that I didn’t further research your company beyond the social profiles. If I would’ve looked back at LEB and WebHostTalk for the last 18 months, I would’ve seen the numerous “refund” problems (meaning, refunding people fraudulently), and overselling services that will never provide what you offer.

I sincerely hope that one or all of my complaints does something to hinder your business.
Because either you’re encouraging people to do this at your company or you’re facilitating the people who are doing this without your knowing.

If it wasn’t a trend from 2015 till now, I’d say maybe it was circumstantial. But it is not.

Well I don’t know what some of y’all are argueing about, but my alpharacks server has been pretty damn solid for the past 3 months I have been using it. May I point out an observation. It just seems a bit funny how y’all complain but don’t respond when alpharacks come and try to help you out.

I haven’t used AlphaRacks for what seems a couple of years. It was a great experience. I think i had a $15 a year server in LA and would stream video to Australia with no issue. I’ll be getting one shortly as soon as i can think of something to put on it!

Alpharacks honestly isn’t bad for what it is. Obviously you aren’t going to get a fully loaded Mercedes Benz at Honda Civic pricing but at least your getting something that is reliable, works well and for a cheap price. Don’t expect the world and just know you aren’t paying for that either. I am a very happy customer. There support always responds within 1 hr, which is more than OK. I’m not here to expect instant response times for 8 dollars a year.

I feel obligated to give AlphaRacks a good word here, as I feel like I am practically stealing from them with how cheap the VPS are, so this is the least I could do. What really shocked me is the responsiveness and the technical support they provide even for the cheap tier VPS like I have. Their support team spent a good few hours answering with my newbie questions last night, which I appreciated since I’m still learning the ins and outs of Linux.

One of the best providers I’ve ever used. Keep doing what you’re doing guys!

I would strongly recommend this if you’re looking for a cheap server that will get the job done. Been using them since they bought out Rijx, and i can’t remember the last time I even had an issue. At under 10 bucks annually, I have no complaints.

Hi! Can I install docker on the Linux VPS Special 2GB? I would like to use a newer Ubuntu version (at least 16.04, or Arch Linux)

Thanks in advance for your answer.

    April 29, 2017 @ 11:52 pm | Reply
    • To run Docker, you need to order a KVM VPS, it does not run on OpenVZ servers. (https://www.alpharacks.com/kvm)

We do offer the latest versions of Ubuntu on both OpenVZ and KVM, you can reinstall your VPS in the SolusVM control panel at anytime.

Tried the $5/mo Windows VPS — it is so slow it is unusable. You can’t even browse the web w/out pegging the cpu at 100% … dare not try to run any applications. I mean I expected it to be a little trouble with only 1024 RAM on a Win box, but goodness. That 1x vCPU is a killer — you shouldn’t offer a package that has no practical use.

I’m asking to upgrade to the $10/mo package, and hoping for better.

    • you should check you I/O Speed. Because mine is 5MB/s (Even USB 2.0 is faster than this). I can’t install anything without taking hours to complete.

      • Hi Yoko, our servers are running on enterprise drives with Hardware RAID 10 arrays, and we also have caching mechanism in place to provide great disk performance – you should only be receiving fantastic speeds!

Please send over a support ticket if you’re still seeing any issues, we will make sure to take care of this.

    • D Kelly, please send over a support ticket and we’ll be happy to investigate and tell you where the bottleneck appears to be.

I agree with you that Windows is a little on the higher side when it comes to resource consumption, especially when compared to Linux, but our entry level Windows VPS plan should be sufficient for basic needs such as light web browsing. You can always upgrade to a higher plan later too.

*** Argh *** I tried to use AlphaRacks for Windows and Linux hosting. After too many emails yesterday asking why their Windows servers were only available through a Java browser console (in case you are not aware this is VERY insecure and you have to use an out of date browser to even run Java plugins now) I gave up and asked to cancel my subscription immediately and to refund my money. This was less than 12 hours after commencing the service and have sent numerous emails asking to cancel the service again today and I keep getting told that they have opened up VNC or that others are doing this (insecure practice) without a problem. If is not good enough that it takes customers leaving for the vendor to look at reasonable security measures and I want out.

Dont take my word for the issue, Oracle (who makes Java) announced in January 2016 that they are deprecating Java plug-ins for browser https://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/us/security/news/vulnerabilities-and-exploits/oracle-finally-kills-java-browser-plugin. Or type Java browser exploit into Google and find out for yourself.

    Love, peace and good vibes!
