AmeriNOC - $6.75 256MB Xen HVM VPS in San Diego

AmeriNOC Mike from AmeriNOC emailed me their special coupon code to get 25% off recurring discount on their unmanaged Xen VPS range. 25OFF256 is the code, and the lowest spec one would be $6.75/month after the discount. Here is the sign up link, and it has

  • 256MB memory
  • 25GB storage (Hybrid HDD in RAID10)
  • 2TB/month data transfer on 1Gbps
  • Xen HVM/SolusVM

Here are some info on Hybrid drives, although I am not sure how much performance can be gained on a server hosting virtualized environment. Lots of payment methods are supported — QG (credit cards), PayPal, LinkPoint (credit cards), AlertPay, CashX.com, OKPAY, etc. Servers in AIS Data Center in San Diego CA — see their datacenter page for details and speed test page for test download files. According to Mike, AmeriNOC has been around for more than 10 years. Indeed their IP address is delegated to “A1COLO.COM”, which redirects to AmeriNOC’s website, and A1COLO.COM was registered in July 2002.

FreeBSD 8.2 is also a configurable option for operating system.

  3. No Windows. CentOS 6 appears to have x86 option. However if it’s Xen HVM, wouldn’t you have option to upload your own ISO image?

  5. Hi,

These unmanaged plans are new to the site and the page needs more info added still, so my apologies for any confusion on this, we have only offered fully managed hybrid VPS plans with Directadmin in the past. Yes, you can install Windows on these, they are Xen-HVM plans and we have an ISO for Windows 7 Professional x86_64, but it is a BYOL situation with Windows.

As to 32-bit / 64-bit, we do have both for FreeBSD already inside the SolusVM panel as well as for CentOS 6 / CentOS 5.6 and we are happy to create ISO’s on request if you find it isn’t already listed as an option in the SolusVM panel.

    Regards,
    Matt

    • Hi Tom,

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of that option or had it requested. It looks to be UK based, but I see they have an API so it might be an option we can add at some point, we will put it on the list to research. Paxum is another option we accept now that wasn’t listed above.

    • Hi, I meant to look into the a few other times after I saw this post and kept getting sidetracked during the week. Here’s what we see from the server node you are on to that same file at Cacefly. As you can see, there’s a big difference, so if you are still having issues please contact us so we can look over your VPS/OS configuration.

We also ran a trace from us to cachefly, they appear to have some odd routing going on, assuming the hops are labeled correctly. If they are based in Chicago notice how the third hop hits Chicago and keeps on going. I just wanted to point this out since that cachefly download file seems to be the standard used here after reading through the other posts.

While this next file is closer to us, here’s another sample, please feel free to send us links to other test files if you want to see additional results.

      • There was a major power outage in Southern California starting yesterday afternoon that spread from Orange County down to Mexico and east to Yuma, Arizona and parts of Pheonix. The estimates I’ve seen are as many as 6 million people were without power, with the vast majority still without service. That said, at no point during this outage were we or the DC ever offline as backup generator power kicked in immediately.

Maybe your LA ISP was effected by this outage somehow?

      • Hi,

No, the 256 Xen-HVM plans are not set up automatically as most of the installers require 512 MB RAM to run, so we have to manually run the order to create the VPS, then upgrade it to 512 MB, we install the OS and then activate the order which sends the new account email is sent out. That said, I’m not showing any pending orders at this time. Please check your spam folder for the new account email and if you don’t see it please contact us at support at amerinoc dot com using the email assigned to your account so we can get the new account details to you. BTW, our help desk is staffed 24/7 and I’m not seeing any open tickets regarding this either, please correct me if there is one.

        Thanks,

  12. We have clearly stated that we restrict SSH access to our network with a firewall. If you have a service where the IP changes you should have received instructions on what needs to be done to resolve this, we will be happy to work with you to resolve this. If you feel it’s a waste of money we will be happy to refund you, we aren’t some fly by night operation out to scam anyone, but we do protect our network, which I’m sure can be frustrating for some that are ordering these unmanaged plans. Please note, for over 10 years our standard hosting packages have all been based on managed service, targeting clients that want us to do everything, so SSH access for them is never a concern. Do we have some kinks to work out with these unmanaged plans, certainly… and we will.

      • I would venture to guess most companies posting VPS offers here may not be running their own network and aren’t responsible for the overall network security, but I could be wrong. Regardless, yes, we do block SSH access by default on Port 22 at the network level on the core router. As mentioned in another response, most of our plans are managed and the clients never need SSH access. For those that do, we add their IP(s) to the whitelist.

For these plans, as Jim has been so kind to point out, it’s unmanaged and the user expects to get going and have SSH access. We agree, the mistake here on our part was not being as clear in our welcome email explaining the network setup and assuming those who were ordering these plans would understand that once they were set up, if they didn’t want to run SSH on port 22 and send us their IP they could easily use the VNC client to change the SSH port to whatever they wanted to use which would allow them unrestricted SSH access.

        September 11, 2011 @ 8:59 pm | Reply
  13. Jim Snow:

So I have an Update for All

The port 22 is blocked you need to go to your Control panel and use the VNC console and change the port to a Port of your choice first you have to install The Image of your choice and then restart the SSH daemon and u are ready 2 go

    September 11, 2011 @ 7:51 pm | Reply
    • Thanks for all your feedback Jim, both here and through the ticket system. This should be more clear for people that order in the future as we have expanded on the notation in the new account welcome email to include the following information.

** READ ME ** The default SSH port during install is port 22. By default, we block access to port 22 at the core router for our network. If you choose to keep the default of port 22 for SSH access you will need to provide your IP to us to have it added to our firewall. If you wish to bypass this to have unrestricted SSH access on your VPS we suggest you use the VNC client after your VPS has been created to switch to the port of your choice.

Keep all the feedback coming. How’s the new custom ISO you requested working out?

      • paul:

Why on earth do you block port 22 (it won’t really slow down port scanners) and is your VNC port secured somehow? I asked this further up, but Yomero referred me to down here.

  14. One more thing I want to point out to everyone as many do not seem to understand this, we are offering Xen-HVM, not Xen-PV. Several of you have “nicely” informed us that this VPS doesn’t work the same way your other VPS does or X,Y and Z show differently compared to your other Xen VPS plans and there fore quick to point out what you feel are our short comings every step of the way.

For those that aren’t aware, Xen-PV (Paravirtualization) is software virtualization, Xen-HVM (Hardware Virtual Machine) is fully virtualized at the hardware level. You can read up on the differences at http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/XenOverview.

While they are both Xen, it’s like comparing a green apple and a red apple, they are both apples, but they are different, so you should know the differences before you order instead of going back to the fruit stand and yelling at the farmer because the green apple was tart and you feel it should of been sweet like the red apple.

    ;-)

      • Yeah, that’s what I ended up doing; I just didn’t see any reason for it since it’s *unmanaged* and I have my own DNS to point at it.

standart whmcs template. It will be concatenated with your hostname. I usually use example.org in case I don’t want to show my top-secret domain name

  17. If anyone’s interested in a review:

I’ve found the service to be very well-run, but a little rough around the edges. I have two control panels — one for my server, one for billing & support. This seems redundant, but acceptable.

I had to contact support about an incorrect gateway IP address. I got it working with their help, however, a couple of weeks later the incorrect address is still visible on the SolusVM control panel.

My VPS performance has been a little below where I expected it, though I wonder if perhaps that has to do with the network.

The network is the reason I am writing this review; this server is noticeably laggy, something I would not expect from a data center located in California (I’m in the Midwest). A traceroute reveals that the last three hops are all within AmeriNOC’s internal network and I suspect network filtering and firewalls are slowing things down. After all, this is their first foray into unmanaged VPS hosting; they’re probably not designed for SSH connections from the outside world (except malicious ones!).

The cause of my lag could be network, yes, however I also suspect that they may have over-provisioned their servers; my performance feels vaguely sub-par and seems to vary frequently.

Hopefully they will iron out these wrinkles in the coming months; however at this rate I will be switching to RamHOST (where I maintain my other servers; the one in London is more responsive than the the one I have with AmeriNOC, and it has even fewer resources) and relegating this server to a backup server I keep my interaction with it to a minimum.

In conclusion; I love the FreeBSD support (hard to find!), the full-stack emulation and the RAID 10 (also hard to find!). The support is polite, competent and responsive. I just feel like this “apple” hasn’t quite finished ripening yet.

Yeah, the network performance is poor.

    • After I posted this, I fired off a quick support request (via my second control panel!) and Mike has just replied (very quickly, I may add).

He states that they are aware of the problem; it’s specific to the server I’m running on. He’s moving me to a new one, so hopefully that will ameliorate the problem.

  18. Ia your first vps? Because is completely normal to have two panels.

    • On the contrary, I’ve been running VPS’ on and off for years; I’m used to having integrated (often custom) control panels where you can do everything in one place.

I’m not saying it’s not normal, I’m saying it’s not normal for me and I would prefer to have just one. Also, it seems kind of silly.

To be fair, this is my first foray into the low-end; I’m *also* used to $20/month!

  19. Rami:

Reading almost all the comments, I felt that I have to say that it’s sad how people complain about the 22 port blocking, I always change the port number even if it wasn’t blocked, and I think many do the same.

But what is real funny, complaining about Xen HVM mode, and blaming the host company, well that’s just sad, HVM is the closet thing to a dedicated server, and they are complaining, funny and sad.

  20. I’ve actually tried finding these pencils in my area, and nothing. None of the places seems to have even heard of them. Thanks goodness for online shopping!
