LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

AvailableVPS - $14/Year 128MB OpenVZ VPS Exclusive Offer

Updated August 2011 — AvailableVPS.com has not been resolving since 21 July. They have also tried to sell their domain.

AvailableVPS Daniel from AvailableVPS emailed me yesterday (and chased up again today) about their special offer to LowEndBox readers. Here are the deals:

  • 128MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer on 20Mbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • $14/Year (Order Link)
  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 25GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer on 50Mbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • $30/Year (Order Link)

I know the first offer when you click through it actually says $12/year but 14 bucks is what I got in the email so I’ll stick that — just in case it is changed later. German servers with Hetzner, and according to previous post they are a sub-company of SetupLink. Domain registered for 3 months. Israeli operation.

UPDATES: As some might have voiced out in the comments, Available VPS might not have actual servers when they take your orders. The practise here seems to be getting all the pre-orders in first (which is never spelt out in the order form), before AvailableVPS order a dedicated server. IMHO in theory it is not too bad if the turn around is short, i.e. getting all the orders in, placing an order for dedicated server, getting everyone deployed in under 24 hours. However this can appear to be deceitful as most people would assume the provider already have the servers ready before taking orders. There is also no guarantee on the definite timeline when the order will be fulfilled — if ever at all.

  12. @Tom — ha. I think I read their website wrong because 20MB network port just does not make sense to me :) It is talking about the size (megabytes) or throughput/bandwidth (megabits per second)?!

Sarcasm from my end :), clearly the owner has problems not only with English (if you see he’s replies), but also problems with simple math. That’s why even deal with this host, no matter how good the offer would be.

  20. @Beny – My Kloxo only consume around 59MB-200MB, with tinydns, Apache, mod_php, perl, MySql, qmail with spamassassin. It serves 1 site with MySql and more than 10 low traffic sites using Sqlite2. If you use lighttpd, then it will reduce the memory consumption.

Kloxo runs well with 32bit OS, while the 64bit OS might need several manual tweaking and recompiling.

  29. i got this email:
A vulnerability has been found in the Linux kernel, which unfortunately is just about every system running 64-bit Linux.

This vulnerability was introduced into the linux kernel in April 2008, and so essentially every distribution is affected, including RHEL (CentOS).

For the full story, follow these links:

    http://blog.ksplice.com/2010/09/cve-2010-3081/

    http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2010-3081

    How to protect yourself

We suggest you upgrade your system kernels as soon as possible, putting a higher priority on shared hosting servers is advised.

Most systems will simply upgrade via yum, however your datacentre may have a local yum repository, so the new kernels may not be available yet (This has been reported by a few users already). We suggest you add a standard CentOS mirror to your yum configuration file to overcome this situation.

OpenVZ have a patched kernel available in there yum repository (2.6.18-194.8.1.el5.028stab070.5) so a yum update should allow you to install the new kernel, if not, the kernel is available for download here: http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/kernel/rhel5/028stab070.5

CentOS also have a new kernel release that patches the vulnerability in the standard and Xen kernels (2.6.18-194.11.4.el5), which is available via yum also.

Please do not submit tickets about kernel upgrades. Use this following forum thread for help http://forum.soluslabs.com/showthread.php/1898-Please-Read!!-Linux-Kernel-Vulnerability

    Regards

    Soluslabs Ltd

So we will do update then restart to the servers today at GMT +2 00:00 night we also emalied all clients

I don’t mind people who aren’t native English speakers having dodgy grammar or spelling, as long as I can understand what they’re trying to say.

I do wish more companies would get someone to check over their T&C though, some are painful to read, and really not clear about some things.

  32. Some people are asking why we sell 20mbits or 50 mbits. This 20mbits and 50mbits is a dedicated line to your vps. The server has a 1GBPS line. we are carefully allocating this bandwidth to each client to keep the line from getting oversold.

Also, AvailableVPS works closely with hosting companies in the USA. As a result, we can provide English support to all of our clients. If you open a support ticket, or contact us on live chat – you will talk with our english speaking support staff.

Is the 20mbit a hard limit, or is it the minimum you’re allocated? Can a VPS burst to gbit assuming the others aren’t using it?

looking at Sei Kan’s wget test it looks like it’s burstable.

Your website confuses me a little. There seems to be confusion between bit and byte, b and B, eg:

    50MB dedicated – that’s megaByte, but there’s no way you’re doing 50MB dedicated for $5/month.

Also on another package you offer 500MB connections. I doubt you have a 10gbit server with only two VPS on it. :)

It’s more likely that it’s 50mbit dedicated (which is still very nice considering the cost).

You also offer daily payments. What is the minimum contract time on these packages? Could I pay 50c and try one of your servers out for a day?

Plan I-IIII – where are these servers located?

    September 23, 2010 @ 4:47 pm | Reply
  34. ok lets start :)
    vps128 has limit 20mbits vps256 has 50 mbits
i know that its need to be fixed its mbits not MB also the packge you saw for 500MB its 500 mbits this wean the server has 1GBPS so tis mean as its say ther 2 clients per server

daily and weekly not have contracrt but you have to add 5$ credit as its say on website in big red letters

Plan I-IIII same in germany but another server they dont limited to mbits you get shared 100mbits for all clients on server the server has 100mbits dedicated

Sei Kan’s was order vps256 you can do upgraed in panel and get this if you use 128 :)

  37. Here is a clarification:

    20mbit (2560 kb/s) 50mbit (6400 kb/s)

the line is limited, but can still fluctuate by small amounts +-5mbits

this is 2 pictures from solusvm:
    http://tinyurl.com/2une6h2
    http://tinyurl.com/32fxfgb
    we limit this in solusvm

  38. Gary:

Sorry, you’re still wrong. 2560kb/s (kilobits/second) is 2.5mbit/second (megabits/second) and your quoted numbers for 50mbit is way off too. 20mbit is 20480kb/s.

Even if it fluctuates by 5mbit either way, it doesn’t explain Sei Kan’s 400mbit+ wget.

  40. Gary:

I should clarify: I’m not nit-picking for the sake of it. I’m considering becoming a customer but right now all I see is a confusing website, a company run by someone who doesn’t know the difference between bits and bytes, and customer testimony (Sei Kan’s wget) that doesn’t tally with what the owner of the company says.

I’m not interested in fixed 20mbit or 50mbit, but if it’s burstable like Sei Kan says, that’s fine. If it’s not, how did he get that wget speed?

Gary, well if its what you see good for you “a company run by someone who doesn’t know the difference between bits and bytes”
Well i will tell you few words about me, im in hosting from 13 years old today im 19 years old, im not some noob that dont know anything i was owner of big company in israel for 3 years but after that i closed becosue problem with israel clients that pay few dollars and want get all the world.

so i hope this answerd the 350k speed that sei got

I think you want too much for the price you pay, you dont want limit of port? for this price? you want 1GBPS? or 100Mbits? port no one will do this for you for this price unless he oversell

also some clients say that my price not nake sense that im overselling well im not 1 reason i dont do this for money! im doing this becosue i like this

  42. Gary:

Why does it matter from your point of view what speed a VPS can burst to if there is a monthly transfer limit?

Once your 1TB/month is used up, your VPS gets suspended whether that’s on the first day or the 30th day of the month.

Moving on from that, I see no reason why a VPS shouldn’t be able to burst to the full capacity of the connection, assuming none of the other VPS are using it.

I’m sure most providers do a certain amount of overselling, that’s fine with me. Not many people use the full capacity of their VPS 24/7. As long as it’s possible for me to use what I’ve paid for (in this case 128MB ram, 15GB drivespace and 1TB transfer) that’s fine with me. I can’t imagine how you can give 1TB of bandwidth a month for a little over $1, but maybe you know something I don’t.

I think I’m going to give it a try anyway. I’m sure I’ll be able to find a use for it, and it’s cheap enough that if it ends up to be awful I won’t lose any sleep over it. :)

  43. i will explane you again image this ok
you buy vps with ni limit of speed but you not only one on the server right? so some one buy vps like you and use it for shoutcast or what every all the line for few minuts so if 1GBPS used all other vps servers are stuck right? in this case you open ticket and cry why the server slow or not working and if you do research oin WHT forum some times you see ppl open posts and say the server wasent down but the line wasnt working some times this happen becosue the reason i provided you here
Im sorry for my bad english here i writed this fast and didnt check for fix it but you will understand the catch and dont tell me that im wrong becouse i think now you will say im right

I understand why you’d ensure people get a minimum speed, but not why you’d impose an artificial maximum. I have several VPS where I can burst to 1gbps. Most virtualisation technologies ensure that no one VM can monopolise the host’s resources.

“English speaking customers” doesn’t mean native English speakers.
So excuse us, if a person isn’t native English speaker, like some of his potential clients (LEB readers), doesn’t mean he can’t make offers here and doing business.
Remember RackVM and Ben Harper’s beautiful speech?

    @GARY:
Let’s say, your box has 1gbps link, and you have 100 clients with no restriction.
If some client constantly abuses this box with some high traffic app, others may be in trouble.
That’s why Daniel gives everyone 20mbps guaranteed, but not burstable.
I assume Daniel’s boxes have 1gbps speed, and average of 50 clients in a box, so that makes the “20mbps” clear.

    @PASCAL:
That was offensive, why so serious? :)
    It’s a bad language IMAO.

    @DANIEL (avaliablevps):
How can you guarantee the “1000GB/month data transfer”?
    Sounds strange for me.

  49. with 1GBPS link we have a large Bandwidth package from our datacenter.

I do this because servers are my life, :) money is not the problem here.

We can pay for more bw if need

  50. Gary:

I understand the concept of it, simplyfast, I’d just rather it was burstable. 20mbps is fine for what I’m going to use it for, I’d just have bought a few more if it were burstable. The virtualisation technology should ensure everyone gets their 20mbit as a minimum, even if someone else wants to use all the rest of the unused bandwidth available to the server.

If there are 50 clients on a box, and 49 of them are using 10mbit between them currently, the other customer should be able to burst to the full potential of the box. It’s not a problem for me, I’ll just keep my VPS where I need good speed with other providers.

“If there are 50 clients on a box, and 49 of them are using 10mbit between them currently, the other customer should be able to burst to the full potential of the box” – You’re right, but what if “the other customer” doing this all the time?
I’ve also said “may” have troubles.

  54. Gary:

I’ve been a customer for around an hour now, so it’s a little early for me to be reviewing them. Slight hiccup in the setup, but it was fixed very quickly. If all support tickets are sorted this quickly I’ll be a happy customer. Hopefully I won’t have to open any, but things go wrong with any host. How quickly they sort the problems is what matters.

To your previous point, if the 1 customer out of 50 does this all the time the virtualisation tech should start to throttle them, the same as it would with CPU usage or drive IO. Maybe a rolling window of an average of 20mbit. Use an average of more than 20mbit for an hour, and you’re throttled back to 20mbit or less for the rest of the 1 hour window.

So in an hour you can do, in theory, 421GB with a gbit port. Averaging 20mbit for an hour would give you 9GB. You could burst to full speed and use your 9GB in a few minutes, then be forced down to a normal speed, until the hour has rolled past.

On another VPS I burst to 200mbit/sec for a few times a day, but in the last 6 months I’ve used between 87GB and 119GB of transfer per month. I average around 0.3mbit/s on that box – it sits idle for most of the day – but the ability to burst to a few hundred mbit/sec is what made me choose that box for that job.

On this VPS I could average 10x that speed, but I wouldn’t be able to burst to 200mbit+ so it’s no good for that purpose.

I’m looking for another box to replace it though, since I use a quarter of the monthly transfer, 5% of the allotted ram and a third of the hard drive space I’m paying for. I got it half price for the first year, but when faced with the full yearly price, it’s nowhere near the bargain it was a year ago. The VPS market has become a lot more competitive.

Pay for what? You don’t have server.
Aren’t people supposed to wait for the server-ready, then pay for it?
Or you just want to collect the money first and pay for dedicated server and then
provision the vps? If that’s the case, what a business!

    3) Wait 0-12 hours (I dunno how fast they provision)
    4) Get the VPS

  79. Gary:

It’s a fairly sensible way to do it really. Rather than run at a loss and hoping he gets customers, he makes sure the boxes are paying for themselves before he orders them. That way the business doesn’t collapse in 3 months because a server’s income only covers a quarter of its costs.

Playing devil’s advocate, it could also be one big ponzi scheme. Not saying AVPS are up to anything like that, of course. :)

  80. @ Gary thanks to explane them some one here was told that i will be in dead poll in few months so as he can see i dont do like regular companeis that buy server and hope get clients in this case you really 80% will be in dead poll
this why im not in dead poll becosue i do this diffrent i alredy have exprince as i told i was owner of company in israel for 3 years so i know how this is going and i dont get it what you care if i have server befoure or after you pay? alot companies do setup time 24h not everyone do instant

    September 25, 2010 @ 2:07 pm | Reply
  81. Gary:

Yeah, that’s a good point. A lot of resellers of dedicated servers don’t have the boxes in stock, they take your payment then order it from the datacentre. This isn’t all that different.

I guess a lot of people are wary of paying a year up front, but it’s the equivalent of 2 or 3 months with any other provider. I took a chance in ordering, knowing that I might not get the full year out of this VPS, and knowing that if I lose $14 I’m not going to be too bothered about it.

I’d rather a VPS provider was covering his costs than hoping to break even next month or the month after.

Where are you getting dedicated bandwidth at Heztner?

They write it on their site that each node only gets 5TB on a 100mbit port and 10TB on a 1Gbit port. I get the feeling that the reason you’re port locking is not to ‘garauntee’ anything, but because you know that Hetzner will cap your port to 10Mbit once you burn through that 5TB – 10TB/m.

I highly doubt you’ll be buying more BW on those once you run out since it costs around 5EUR/m per extra 1TB.

I paid for the 128MB deal and you told me that you do not have any slot for after I paid for it. If you didn’t have server available why did you took my order and the payment? It is just logical that if you cannot provide me with a server then should be returning my monies.

Why you are giving all the jazz about TOS, Sales department etc. Let’s face it is one man’s operation with few dedicated servers. You are the admin, sales, technical support person.

Would you please return my monies? I do not want to make any fuss with you, it is not worth the time and effort. Thank you!

I have to agree, if the customer decides he doesn’t want the service before it’s been provisioned there should be no problem refunding him.

It’d have been nice if he’d read the thread and understood the situation before paying, but being reasonable and giving him a refund voluntarily is better than him kicking up a fuss and initiating a paypal chargeback.

@ AVPS Admin – the bit in your T&C that says no refunds is most likely illegal in this context. In the UK, distance selling regulations give you a 7 days cooling off period in which the customer can cancel for a full refund for any reason whatsoever. I’d imagine most countries have similar legislation.

Having that clause in your T&C is meaningless, it doesn’t supercede law just because the customer agreed to the contract. Paypal will most likely side with the customer in this, so you’d be saving yourself hassle and bad publicity by refunding them.

@ Spirit – why not just be patient for a few days and get your VPS?

There is lots of provider giving budget deal in this site. If any provider out of stock they don’t take any further order. So, you are saying I should have read all the post in this site before I should have placed the order. With you malevolent attitude, I am not feeling good doing any business with you. So, your business model is, take order, collect payment, then buy a dedicated server and then allocate vps to the customer. I mean, you can take peoples monies today, not even decide to give them any server at all and show the customers your TOS –“no refund”.

    – I ask to Lowendbox’s adimn, why did you post his offer in your website – this person has some nasty attitude, bad business model and say the least is a crook. He is abusing and exploiting lowendbox’s readers. I will defiantly will escalate this to paypal claim.

From the UK User Agreement for PayPal Service

13.3 What type of payments are eligible for re-imbursement under PayPal Buyer Protection?

PayPal Buyer Protection only applies to PayPal payments for certain tangible, physical goods that can be posted. Payments for the following are not eligible for re-imbursement under PayPal Buyer Protection:

    intangible items
    services

Not the full list of exceptions, VPS’s will be in the exceptions.
Probably the same for all countries and apply to any VPS bought with Paypal.

@ Keith – It’s still against UK DSRs, so quoting UK Paypal rules doesn’t matter. A Paypal rule doesn’t trump law. Likewise, other countries will have similar legislation.

I think Rabby should just be patient. The AVPS site does state instant setup, but when the owner has no server in stock there’s not much he can do. It’s Sunday, after all.

It’s not a scam as long as he delivers, but other providers already have servers and put ad here.

I just filed a claim with Paypal.

The guy pays for his dedicated server monthly but customers from Lowendbox have to pay for yearly plan. All you know he can stop paying for his dedicated server in 2 months and his servers goes offline. Customer can not file any dispute with paypal after 45 days.

He buys dedicated for $54- 120$/ month. Takes monies from 25 customers make $350 dollars at one time and then stop paying his provider in 2nd month — so his investment $54-120$ — profit $230 -296 / per server.

But you simply claims he *can* stop paying for his server after 2 months
You have no proof that he *did* stopped your VPS

For example, say if you’ve paid “Company ABC” for a year of “Premium Membership”, you can still claims that he *can* close his company – without proof.

This is the risk you take when you prepay. Any company can do this to you. If you have a reason to think he’s likely to do this, feel free to say why. I have one, it’s performing fine. There’s a possibility that what you’ve suggested will happen, but that’s why the sensible among us keep regular backups. ;)

Fist of all, this is not a ‘company’ to say. This is an one man operation. Not officially incorporated, does any body know their mailing address?? No provider in Lowendbox offers and takes monies knowingly that they can not provide the VPS.

The guy has some attitude problem. He was giving me his sales department, TOS etc B.S. when I asked my money back. I placed my order, paid his bill – if he could not give me the VPS, then he should be giving my money back. After filing dispute with Paypal and opening few tickets with him, he tells me that he will buy his sever in few days and then will set up the VPS.

If he didn’t have the server, he shouldn’t have taken my payment.

It is disgusting what Paypal is doing. We are paying this crooks and paypal is helping them to do this.

Nowhere does he prove AVPS are crooks. He doesn’t like their method of provisioning, which they’d been up front about, and which is no different to a lot of providers.

OVH will take your money even though there are no servers available, and make you wait for them. Sure, OVH are a more reliable bunch than a one-man show, but it doesn’t mean AVPS are crooks.

Bottom line is we’ve got nothing but a few maybes and one guy’s suspicions. So far I don’t see anyone posting here reporting having been ripped off by them. Maybe in future we will, but right now I know of no evidence that proves AVPS are crooked.

He either has evidence and should share it, or he doesn’t and should quit libelling AVPS.

This deal is probably no longer available but in case anyone is wondering how they did, my VPS is now offline and I cannot get it to boot from the control panel. Their site is unreachable. There doesn’t appear to be a DNS entry for it anymore.

You may notice that it has been just over 45 days so the window to dispute the transaction through PayPal has now closed.

    Coincidence?

Remember, pay with your credit card, kids.

You’d lose a Paypal dispute even if.in the time limit, It’s an intangible item which is in the exceptions.

      November 13, 2010 @ 10:27 am | Reply
      • Dick:

First of all, I’ve reversed many PayPal transactions from hosts that I’ve found on this site who shut down overnight with no notice. The only way it won’t work because it’s deemed intangible is when the vendor themselves contest your refund request with that reason. Any vendor that would do that after ceasing to provide you service is clearly crooked.

That being said, this scenario is the entire reason I say “pay with your credit card”. You can use funds from your bank account, funds received from other ppl or your credit card when you use PayPal. If you use either of the first two, the transaction is at the mercy of PayPal’s discretion. If you use your credit card, PayPal can deny your claim but then you can just call your bank and they fix it because credit card company policies are less draconian than PayPal.

That’s right. PayPal is worse than the credit card companies who congress (that group that can’t agree upon anything) recently took it upon themselves to legislate against their practices.

So, to recap, pay with your credit card.
