Well known that ColoCrossing’s little two racks are the causes for 99% of their DoS attacks. Thanks for making Lowendbox just a little shittier. Bunch of shitty chinese spam links, same shell companies selling the same shitty ColoCrossing speed-step servers (so they can stay under the amp usage)

    • Kloxo+CentOS should be fine with 5 gb space ? I remember that it takes about 2.5 GB without the one-click installer. You also need about 1 GB for the OS.

You actually get 6 GB. They might have thought about the disk space for the OS. My Ubuntu 12.04 installation takes ~700 MB.

Debian uses even less. Ideally, this package should use Debian/Ubuntu and nginx. I’m confused as to why anyone would even consider CentOS. Keep in mind though that in most cases Debian won’t have an SSH server installed by default so you may need to use the serial console to install one. I’d recommend dropbear as it is light on resources.

      • Actually every openvz debian template installs ssh service. Does cpanel support centos? I don’t think it does.

  5. LowEndCriticus:

    Acceptable Use Policy

We do not tolerate the following activities on our servers:
    (…)
DoS or other attacks (either outgoing or incoming)
    (…)

Please note that some issues (for example, DoS attacks or spamming) may not allow time for contact – in these cases we will suspend the service right away.

We reserve the right to terminate services without providing a reason. In this case we will provide the refund for the prepaid unused service.

So that means that you should search for a different host when you’re victim of a (D)DoS or Slashdot-effect. That’s very strange imo.

    August 7, 2013 @ 11:04 pm | Reply
    • LowEndCriticus, I know that these terms sounds confusing, but this is more or less the standard practice in case of a DDoS attack (I’m not trying to defend them).

      August 7, 2013 @ 11:33 pm | Reply
      • Christian:

I think this sounds strange. They could at lease pretend to be supportive like “We will warn you one time and then cancel your services in case it happens again.” Without a basic level of support (i don’t mean how to install software, i mean really the important stuff) this offer is rather useless for me :(

        August 7, 2013 @ 11:39 pm | Reply
      • I thought standard practice was turn off the target (or rather null-route them) until the attack ends then turn them back on. Something that you have zero control over being in the ToS doesn’t make any sense at all.

        August 8, 2013 @ 9:36 am | Reply
    • We cannot automate the handling of DoS, hence it is very expensive to us to deal with these attacks. Sorry, but on a $10/year plan there is no other way. On the other hand, we are trying to be upfront about it.

    • After you’ve had tons of attacks from chinese acting clueless, you have to kick the idiots off. ‘oh, i suspend website’ – They’re all liars.

5GB disk isn’t enough to do anything with. If they let you upgrade to at least 20 for another $5 that would make this good. Disk is cheaper than RAM.

It’s possible to get Debian well under 500 MB of diskspace. 4.5 GB is more than enough to run a few websites / a DNS server / a VPN / a Munin master / etc.

      August 8, 2013 @ 9:17 am | Reply
    • Yes, generic disks are cheaper than RAM, but we do not use generic (we would have saturated I/O pretty quickly). For mode disk space you could go straight to http://bandwagonhost.com/ and order a great 10G or an awesome 50G plan! :)

Got one today, (instant setup – nice) installed Debian 7 64bit (unfortunately no minimal-template available) and use the box as a teamspeak server. I had some trouble with my former host regarding reliability and uptime, so I chose to switch. Atm using 0,85GB of my diskspace. That leaves still more than 4 GB free.

So much for “isn’t enough to do anything with”. Depends on your desired purpose for the box.

    Can you sell HDD upgrades?
I’ve noticed that the ‘LEB’ code works of the other plans, but it’s not the same sort of value. EG
VPS10G is double the price ($20pa) and comes with:
    – More HDD (10 vs 5)
    – Same RAM (512 vs 512)
    – Lower vSwap (256 vs 512)
    – Lower Bandwidth (200 vs 500)
    – Same CPU (1 vs 1)

I was a customer of Bandwagon before they throttled my cpu.
They said I abused they resource.

I have purchased 4 VPSs from different providers so far, and Bandwagon is the only one who thinks I am abusing.

I think I will never come back to them even though their price is low.

        the spec was :
        128MB/5GB Disk/9.99$ yearly
and they provided 30 days money back

I ran centos+tiger vnc+xfce+wine+one or two windows gui application
cpu usage may reach about 15% sometimes, but not all the time

the vps ran quite ok at the beginning, but finally I requested my money back within the month as I realized that the vps ran slower and slower.
They gave my money back and said they have no choice but to throttle my cpu to prevent cpu abuse.

I’d be very interested in seeing how you could pull off windows applications under wine on a vps that advertises a single shared core in a way that didn’t qualify as abuse. Licensing cost isn’t the only reason you see few budget windows hosts. People who demand windows at low cost or refuse Linux solutions are notorious for beating shared resources to death.

I signed up for Bandwagon today and, so far, the experience has been ideal. The VPS was set up immediately, the e-mails I was sent were helpful, the price is dirt cheap. The server appears to be responsive and comes with Apache and OpenSSH enabled. Server defaults to CentOS 6 (industry standard) but there are lots of other server types, like Debian and Ubuntu from which to choose. I found I had 6GB of disk space (minus about 300MB for the OS). Really happy with what I have seen so far.

  41. Guys,

We have no more room at our German location, we had much more sales than we expected (which is a good thing, in a way). We will be adding more nodes, however, right now I don’t have an ETA for you.

It is possible to migrate later, however, right now it will involve a full data loss on your VPS. In the future we will make it possible to switch location from the control panel without data loss.

    August 12, 2013 @ 7:30 pm | Reply
    • mrc:

looks pretty nice, so let’s sum up:

      – if the VPS’ of orders now placed can be migrated to another location later, that’s fine.

      – if i want additional IPs as soon as the VPS is migrated which also should be paid annually, according to an earlier post here that has to be done via ticket, but according to your faq only 1 ip is allowed: http://bandwagonhost.com/knowledgebase/7/Can-I-order-additional-IP-addresses.html

so i have to ask, can both of this be guaranteed?

      two more questions:

      – is there a max amount of VPS per customer?

      – is there some kind of rescue console available if configuration is somehow screwed up?

      August 13, 2013 @ 11:04 am | Reply

I feel kind of odd saying this, but we are currently out of stock at ALL our locations. Couple of days ago we have packed our EU location, and it was looking like NY will be next. Well, yesterday we have sold out all our NY VPS’. Interestingly enough, this caused an explosion of orders for our AZ location, where we had lots of space…. So we have only lasted for several hours there too.

We just did not expect this promo to have such an effect. I guess we will re-consider how we do things for our next promo. Stay tuned! :)

On top of that – you just CAN’T BEAT this price in EU! You just can’t…
What was purchased just out of curiosity – ended up a magnificent find!
    Thank you BandWagon Host! :)
P.S. What is the best “watchdog” type of app to use with this host on my android? Would be great to have it not only ping the server, but be able to monitor resources, reboot/shutdown, send a command to ssh.

No explanation, or, rather, total ignore from the tech support. “Limited CPU” VPS is totally unresponsive, btw. 100% idling CPU – and webmin home page opens in 30+ secs.

This message in Kiwi (below the on I mentioned) could explain this behavior, though:
“If your application requires more CPU time, we suggest upgrading to a better plan. Please contact helpdesk for instructions on how to upgrade your server.
