LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

BHost - £3.43 512MB OpenVZ VPS in UK

BHost Alex from BHost.net has sent me their early Christmas present for the LowEndBox community. Coupon code is LEBXMASMADNESS and you get 30% off recurring discount, which would have been the biggest discount since they got listed last Christmas. So the same Bronze plan becomes £3.43 (~USD$5.36, +VAT for UK/EU customers). Spec hasn’t changed much either — it actually got less monthly data comparing to a year ago.

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Annual payment also gets 10% off further discount + a free .com, .net or .co.uk domain registration, by logging a support ticket after signing up. Their servers are with RapidSwitch in Maidenhead UK, and you can get the detail of test IP/download files here (test IP: 78.129.251.251). A well established UK hosting company since 2002 with good reviews here in the past.

  1. Bandwidth reduced from 1000G to 500G?

    • Yes it appears to be a recent change. Even the Google Cache still shows 1000GB/month data. I guess that would remove some more “extreme” clients.

  2. Firstly, a great deal from a great provider. Secondly, a little annoying for those of us who signed up with the November 20% off discount.

    …Time to close and reopen.

  3. I had a VPS with them last month, and was going to renew it, but decided to go with a Xen offering another provider. Overall, I had a good experience with the network, vm, and the support that I required from them, which were just simple billing questions, like VAT for US customers, which was removed from my bill. For me, it was my first experience with an OpenVZ guest, coming from a background of Xen and VmWare; although this VM performed well, there were a few items of concern. One issue was when I installed “sysstat” and enabled “sar” on the VM, which caused the machines load to go through the roof, so I removed the package. Another strange item was the network config, as I am used to seeing a device like eth0, but with OpenVz, I get a masq device called vmnet0 — I took me a moment to figure out the right way to configure iptables on this host, when it’s usually a copy/paste from another production machines iptables rule set. Otherwise, the VM did ran speedy when I got the kinks worked out.

Only recommendation I would have for Bhost, is to respond to support requests a little bit faster. I understand some of these are one man shops, and that tickets can pile up when running a business alone, but I just hate waiting several hours for a trivial request to be replied to by a human.

The issues I had with the VM were cause of my lack of experience with OpenVZ guests; overall, I would say that if you need an OpenVZ vps in the UK, these guys are good to go.

  4. Firstly, I just wanted to add to this post – we’re so confident about the quality of our service we’ve introduced a 5 day moneyback guarantee – so you can request a full refund within 5 days of ordering (excludes cost of any free domains claimed).

Also, Dano, thanks for the feedback on the support. It could well be you just had a bit of bad luck as usually our support response time is pretty good (e.g. https://twitter.com/#!/themoblin/status/144922609732157440). We’ve only got 2 people on support, and at busy times, this can prove difficult. We’re working on improving this in the coming weeks.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I have been with bhost for nearly a year. Their service and servers are excellent. I just emailed them, a cheeky email and asked if they would apply the discount to my existing account. All credit to them, they did! That’s me with them for another year. I have a number of VPSes, with all sorts of providers and I am happy to trust bhost with my primary web/email VPS.

Are your vm’s backed up in case of disk failure? I’ve had a bad experience in the past with other suppliers on here !

    • We use RAID 10 disks, so even if we have disk failure your VPS will be safe. There’s also a quick backup option which allows you to download a complete image of your VPS to your local machine for safekeeping.
