LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

BigBrainHost - $3.99 128MB Xen/$2.99 256MB OpenVZ VPS Exclusive Offer

BigBrainHost Brian from Big Brain Host sent me an exclusive LowEndBox offer last Wednesday (yes I did receive your email, and yes I am that behind). Two offers, and two low price.

  • Offer 1 (Sign up link)
  • 128MB memory/384MB swap
  • 30GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • Xen/SolusVM
  • $3.99/month
  • Offer 2 (Sign up link)
  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 300GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM
  • $2.99/month

These are in Chicago with SingleHop, and you can get a test IP from BigBrainHost’s previous offer. Brian has answer some questions here — 100Mbps link, Xeon E5620 minimum, no IRC, etc.

Also notes to those who wish to send me their exclusive offers — please make sure you provide me enough info (spec, virtualization method, location, etc) to save me time digging up from your website, and sorry I am really running short of time these days to email you for clarification :( As for test/trial boxes — I am happy to ONLY if I have time (work load is killing me here, sorry).

    1 month price – $2.99 USD
    3 month price – $4.99 USD
    6 month price – $4.99 USD
    12 month price – $4.99 USD
    What does it mean?
Buy 12-month for 5 bucks, or longer terms more bucks to pay?

    • We have currently turned off anything past monthly. If you want, put a note in the order form and we will take care of you. :)

Thanks for pointing this out. Our billing team is currently working on a more permanent solution.

  8. Mr. X:

FYI, I’m having major problems with this host. I ordered at around 2:30PM EST and received an invoice right away that I paid. I was notified that my server was setup shortly thereafter (not instantaneously but soon enough). I couldn’t access it though. Port 22 wasn’t accessible and it looked not like it was firewalled but that there was no SSH daemon. I notified them and they acknowledged my ticket quickly but it was a little over 2 and a half hours before they told me it was fixed saying it was a problem with the template which seems sloppy to me because I left it on the default template. I can now log in but the server isn’t what I ordered.

I ordered the CentOS 5 64 bit minimal. The instance I have access to is CentOS 4 32 bit. Furthermore, it’s supposed to be 256M burstable to 512M. Instead I have 1G burstable to 2G. You might think this is a good but the server stalls while doing really simple things like attaching to as screen session, :w in vim, reading in local repository data in yum. I have no way of knowing for sure but it FEELS like they’ve allocated 4 times the available RAM on the host and it’s stalling out because the host is swapping like crazy.

Also, the PayPal identifier for them is BIGBRAINHOS.

    • Hi Mr. X,

In regards to setup being instant, it is, as soon as the invoice is marked as paid. Once this is complete, it takes about 3 minutes for the VPS to install, reboot and come online available to use. In regards to the template, it has been confirmed an issue with the template that you chose. We are in the process of rebuilding that template and will have it available shortly.

We corrected the issue regarding your VPS specs as soon as you alerted us to this (around 5pm est). Thanks for the heads up on that.

We are in the process of also setting up new nodes to support current and incoming orders. We will be glad to move you to the new node once it becomes available. :)

Most importantly, Mr. X, This is not typical behavior for our VPS nodes and operation here. I’ve gone ahead and refunded your account and therefore you will receive one month free.

If you have any other concerns, please feel free to update ticket HJI-715879 or contact me directly: brian[at]bigbrainhost.com. I will make sure your requests are handled promptly.

      I apologize for this inconvenience.

  11. Mr. X:

Update on my situation. They did eventually build me out an instance close enough to what I ordered and it seems to be running OK however I wasn’t updated when this happened like they said they would.

About four hours ago I was told, “We are going to move you to the new node here in a little bit. I will update you when this is complete as well.” As far as I can tell, it hasn’t moved yet. Uptime reports like 13 hours so… We’ll see if it continues to perform OK on this other node.

I’ll post again when I have some sense that everything has settled on their end.

  13. An eCern Admin:

We manage large numbers of VPS and dedicated servers for our clients. One of the biggest issues with VPS servers is that some providers do not have Pygrub setup correctly. BigBrainHost is not one of them – their Pygrub works great,

For thos who do not know what Pygrub is – it allows you to boot kernels residing on the filesystem of DomU – your VPS instance – rather than the kernel that is on Dom0 – the sellers filesystem. This is critically important. If you cannot run your own kernel you lose many of the benefits of Xen.

  14. Dan:

Big Brain Host has amazing support. I am currently a customer on “offer 2” and the VPS is working great!

  15. BTW – I have too many old memories. Correction on my earlier post. Pygrub is the older solution for allowing DomU users to boot their own kernel. The new solution is called Pvgrub for those vendors wanting to implement this ability.

It is an absolute requirement for all the Xen VPS servers we rent.

We have been very happy with BigBrainHost.Com

  16. Casper:

I just ordered their Offer 2, OpenVZ. Was up and running in 31 seconds after Paypal payment, however with a CentOS install instead of the Ubuntu I requested (also according to the invoice). The control panel let me install Ubuntu in another 30 seconds though, so no big deal.
Next issue I found was that the clock is running 30 seconds behind. OpenVZ apparently doesn’t allow ntp inside a guest by default, but the host admin can allow this. The host system maybe doesn’t have correct time either, which is bad of course. Submitted a ticket for this, will post another comment with the results.

After submitting my ticket to the right queue (Helpdesk instead of General) I had a fix within 2 hours. That’s great service for a sunday. Happy customer so far.
