    • We have 100 thousand billion IPv6 addresses :) – There free! Why do you hate free things :(

I was talking about the 3! IPv4 on your lowest plan?
        A normal user doesn’t need 3 ips.
        I call that wasting.

        • Perhaps, though many folks appreciate the 1 primary IP and 2 others for setting up their DNS. We do require you to justify the use of all our IPv4 addresses. So they wont go to waste, they just wont cost you any extra if you choose to make use of them :)

Nameserver with 2 or more ips on the same virtualserver or even the same node server is useless. Virtualserver or node down, all your ips down… no backup serving.
Justification is good, but if you advertise 3, 5 ,… customers expect that number of ips.

        • What I find interesting is how Continuum can justify assigning people these massive pools of space when they have slim pickings as it is.

Their latest subnet is just a /20 and was awarded before the new ARIN rules went in place, meaning they’re likely only going to be able to request /22’s or so at this point.

ARIN is actually getting nasty about details, even making downstream clients provide full details of the usage so ‘they sell vps’ won’t work anymore (we should know, we had to detail some of our colocation customers to get our /19).

Time will tell, but them blowing through all of their space right now is going to leave them dead in the water come next year.

And what I find interesting is bucket full of crybabies at LEB and WHT regarding few IPs everytime when someone have/use/need/want more than one or two IPs… like this would really means something. It’s all just business anyway – all rest is hipocrisy and not real concerns regarding those few IPs usage.

As long I am prepared to pay I am able to get as much as I want IPs from most of my host – that’s a fact. And if some of you have really concerns regarding IPv4 usage.. lets write letters to General Electric Company to return /8 back to pool and then to IBM to return another /8 back to pool and then to Xerox Corporation to return /8 back to pool and to Ford Motor Company, to Hewlett-Packard Company to Eli Lily & Company.. and all others which keep huge proportion of non used legacy IPv4 addresses… instead bothering few individuals from hosting industry because FEW (yes, freakin FEW) IPS… like you all really cares…

Almost all of us from those pages have somehow, somewhere allocated more than 2 IPs, don’t we? But oh, yes… I have good reason to have them while others most likely don’t, bla bla…

      • Many, including myself, see it as a screw up on both places to offer this much without covering costs. What’s going to happen when conn. runs out of IP space and ARIN is not giving them anything new? Where are they going to get new capital to pay for their growth? No one wants ‘ipv6 only’ services yet.

Companies shouldn’t be thinking ‘short term’ in regards to IP usage here, they should be thinking towards the future, at minimum 2 years out (more if google/microsoft are smart).

FYI, those companies have IANA space which doesn’t fall under ARIN rules. You can write them all you want but they don’t have to play by anyones rules for the space alas.

Will you return hundreds of IPs which you have but don’t use yet? Of course you wont – it would be dumb and you have plans to use then sooner or later and that justify you to have them, correct?

So what’s then all this fuss around end users which also might have need for FEW IPs but this need isn’t recognized by various “concerned” crybabies…? It’s so annoying to open WHT thread where someone searching for host with 3 IPs requirement and then bunch of idiots instead answering him to stay with topic… try to interrogate if he really need those IPs… I mean if someone express need does he need to explain himself in public… like most of you do this anyway (but still keep more IPs than you need them).

And I repeat – as long I am prepared to pay for IPs I can have them almost as much as I want – same as most of you. At the end of the day it’s just business – so why so much hypocrisy around?

btw. from the day you SOMEHOW got your own IP space you can’t stop talking about IPs and advantage to have own space. More power with you but well… world wont end here. :)

        • You can’t just buy for the sake of buying, that isn’t allowed unless you’re on IANA blocks :) You must justify everything. When we went to ARIN for our /19 we had to justify why users even got a single IP and “Why cant you guys just NAT everyone” – No joke we were actually asked this.

Having a need for them and paying for them is different than ‘here is 3 – 10 ips, enjoy’.

You should be concerned of anyone that is just throwing IP’s out the window like that because at some point they’re going to get hit with a policy change, making them pay more for it, and in the end you have to give it back or pay a lot more on it.

Would you be happy if those 3 ip’s suddenly became 1 free and $5/m in additional fee’s for the other 2? Probably not. Would you be upset if the upfront was $1/m/ea and you knew that from the start? Probably not as well since you were ready to pay for it.

I’ve seen threads on WHT where free things had to be retracted and the end user charged for it, and it always turns into a cry fest and a black eye for the host.

        • I’ve brought it up since I’ve been noticing the fall out already happen ;) It wasn’t hard to get IP space last year, but this year is a different story.

I have a few friends that do their own hosting thing and didn’t heed my warnings and are now having to fight their DC’s for space.

It isn’t like ARIN ip’s are an exclusive thing, it isn’t terribly hard to get if you got some clients behind you. After that it’s just a fee, some paper work, a few FAX’s and the likes.

Yes, but at the end of the day as your client I would get those IPs which BigScoot offer from you too. And from most other “concerned” hosts to. So what’s make difference? 1$ which I would pay for IP from you while I get it from BigScoot more expensive package for free? It makes no difference for IPs exhaustion – and that’s my whole point.

Only difference which I see here is that in order to get some additional IP some hosts earn additional money for me. This and nothign else. Resposability? Justification? Here and there some host ask why (because it need too) and simple ssl/bameservers/something answer do it. It’s not like any host would ever check it – as long invoices for already given IPs are paid no one cares. That’s a fact which make no difference between bigscoot and any other host I deal with.

My point was just that every customers gets 3, 5, … whatever number of ips. Maybe a few really need them. Why not give 1 and let the customer ask for 2 or 3 more. Whether they have to pay or not.
I do not have any problems with people needing more then 1 ip, they should have the chance to get more.
I’m just against just giving them away. I think that most people only need 1.

          @Spirit No problem :)

It depend how you look at this hosting LEB hosting circus. For me is just a business which depend on people needs. If you don’t need those IPs, etc, etc… which means BigScoots offer in general… you will NOT pay for it but you might go for others, as example cheaper buyVM offer, etc…

I often say that people at LEB lost perspective. LEB market become very big, overcrowded with many many hosts. We got choice how to spend those “5 bucks”. One host offer more bandwidth, some other more HDD quota, another more memory, better support, more IPs, low price, less support, good reputation, etc… and for us it’s just a matter of choice what we need, what we are willing to pay. It’s not that EVERY CUSTOMER get 3, 5 IPs.. but every bigscoot customer get 3, 5 IPs – that’s the difference. Bigscoots customers pay for this plan and not as example 15$/y UP2vps or buyVM plan – if you understand what I am trying to say.
Paying for vps is not random phenomen. If you need lowendbox vps but don’t need this what bigscoot have to offer in general (or some detail) you wont pay for it. You would go for cheaper price somewhere else. Or something else… It’s just a business and there’s a lot of hosts with various advantages to chose from.

I think you’re not getting what’s this offer about.
They have to somehow justify being 2x more expensive than BuyVM for two to three times less resources.
And the selling point is IP addresses. Because I don’t see anything else why anyone would pay these prices for the specs. But the IPs are hot stuff in SEO circles and also needed for SSL-requiring ecommerce sites.
So there is no ‘waste’ with every customer getting what they don’t need, it’s just that customers get these plans precisely because they are going to need the IPs.

    5 GB Disk Space lol…

    50 GB Traffic… well what shall i do with 50 gb ?

    July 31, 2011 @ 2:29 pm | Reply
    • A lot. 50GB is more than enough to run a mid-sized website.
One of my websites, which gets 500 views per day, uses only around 5GB bandwidth per month, and 1.5GB web space. In my opinion, you’re getting a fair amount for what you’re paying.

      July 31, 2011 @ 2:56 pm | Reply
      • Quite right Steve. 50GB is a ton of bandwidth for a small VPS. We could offer you 10TB and jack up the price like other folks, but you would just be throwing away your money. We try to price our packages for realistic usage and not try to make a profit on overselling and “expected” usage.

As a follow up to the offer posted here on LowEndBox. We are also currently offering the same monthly deal at 6 months as well.

The Scoots128 at 14.95 and the Scoots256 at 19.95 with the same coupon code.

“only” – heh… how many sites do you have to use more than 10gb per month anyway? I am not BigScoot customer and most likely I wont ever be as they don’t allow IRC usage however I am pretty sure that most LEB users never use even 50% of this traffic on their vpses – and we have them many, don’t we? Spoiled LEB community lost common sense perpective long time ago…

I’d be willing to bet it performs better than BuyVM. BuyVM is pretty hit or miss these days when it comes to how much performance and stability they decide they want to give you. I’ve had a BuyVM 128 for almost a year now and I cant trust it to perform properly. Some days you get more than you pay for and some days its useless.

  4. Just as a general conclusion to the IPv4 vs. IPv6 argument… we don’t give every VPS sign up their maximum IP allocations. We simply offer them to you for free. Open a request and with proper justification they are all yours. We find this attractive as many hosts charge an arm and a leg for IPs which they are getting at a fraction of the cost. We built our packages around the idea of “actual usage” and what people really need. We don’t appeal to everyone, but what I can say is out of all the folks who have ever tried us out, not one has left for any reason other then not needing hosting at that point in time. Nothing but positive reviews anywhere on the web, including here on LEB and WHT. Feel free to ask them :)

but still they are alot of IPs.

if some one provide valid justification they are too much. Like 3 IPs it self cost like your whole plan.

You are doing really good mate. Also giving away two IPs for name servers is un-believable.

well good luck you’re rocking out.
