BurstNET - $6.36 512MB Windows/Xen HVM VPS in Miami

Burst.NET Another offer from President/CEO of BurstNET. Use promo code FL20WIN to get 20% off recurring discount on their Miami-based Windows VPS, powered by Xen HVM. Their low end offer, “VPS Package #1”, would be $6.36/month after the discount. Direct sign up link.

  • 512MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • 2x IPv4 + IPv6 addresses
  • Xen/SolusVM

You also get to choose anything from Windows 2003 SP2 Web Edition, to Windows 2008 Enterprise Edition R2 SP1 — however there does not seem to be a way to actually run alternate OS (Linux, FreeBSD, etc) on it, although I presume Xen HVM would fully support them. Data center would be the same as their previous Miami offer, which you can find the test IP/test downloads here.

I guess enough has been said about BurstNET. Established solid company — you’ll expect them to stick around for a while, although at the same time might not expect personal support experience (if that’s important to you). There are mixed reviews on them here and on WHT, but do note that a large company housing large number of customers will also get proportional good/bad reviews (especially those targeting the low end).

Update: BurstNet is now running 20% off across all its OpenVZ VPS range, for Memorial Day/Bank Holiday. Use promo code MEMBANK20. Expires 6 June.

Orde Manchester UK, Scranton, PA, Los Angeles, CA or Miami, FL.

We only want Windows O/S running on these specific nodes.
There will be separate Xen nodes available in the near future, for running Linux flavored O/S.

    • Xen HVM and SolusVM just stick your ISO’s in /home/solus/xen/iso on the master and add iso in the management panel then sync iso when finished to push it out to the nodes. *BSD is great for HVM as well.

It’s nice that they have all windows option to choose from.
Are these windows option also available on soluvm in order to re-install?
Forexample, I want to install window 2008 standard and would like to reinstall with window 2008 enterprise?

Do not use LowEndBox for support issues. Go to your hosting provider and issue a ticket there. Coming here saying “my VPS is down, what do I do?!” will only have your comments removed.

But I don’t think they are able to return back the amount you prepay during the full year, if you discontinue anytime. That may be the trade in for the amount discount with annual payment..

On another note: (minor issue for most) The whole point in getting two ip addresses sort of become useless when the provisioning staff does not note your order-comments requesting both ips to be in different subnet. The only solution they have, in support ticket, is to order another ip address which is plain absurd.

          @Asim Zeeshan:

The different subnet DNS recommendation refers to physical infrastructure, at least 2 servers connected in different switches / network segments, but ideally geographically distant server locations using networks from different carriers, because the objective is service redundancy — DNS was designed from the ground up to provide this feature.

        • Francisco:

          RFC 2182

A number of problems in DNS operations today are attributable to poor choices of secondary servers for DNS zones. The geographic placement as well as the diversity of network connectivity exhibited by the set of DNS servers for a zone can increase the reliability of that zone as well as improve overall network performance and access characteristics. Other considerations in server choice can unexpectedly lower reliability or impose extra demands on the network.

          3.1. Selecting Secondary Servers

When selecting secondary servers, attention should be given to the various likely failure modes. Servers should be placed so that it is likely that at least one server will be available to all significant parts of the Internet, for any likely failure.

Consequently, placing all servers at the local site, while easy to arrange, and easy to manage, is not a good policy. Should a single link fail, or there be a site, or perhaps even building, or room, power failure, such a configuration can lead to all servers being disconnected from the Internet.

Secondary servers must be placed at both topologically and geographically dispersed locations on the Internet, to minimise the likelihood of a single failure disabling all of them.

That is, secondary servers should be at geographically distant locations, so it is unlikely that events like power loss, etc, will disrupt all of them simultaneously. They should also be connected to the net via quite diverse paths. This means that the failure of any one link, or of routing within some segment of the network (such as a service provider) will not make all of the servers unreachable.

          3.2. Unsuitable Configurations

While it is unfortunately quite common, servers for a zone should certainly not all be placed on the same LAN segment in the same room of the same building – or any of those. Such a configuration almost defeats the requirement, and utility, of having multiple servers. The only redundancy usually provided in that configuration is for the case when one server is down, whereas there are many other possible failure modes, such as power failures, including lengthy ones, to consider.

          RFC 3258

          2.4 Server Placement

Though the geographic diversity of server placement helps reduce the effects of service disruptions due to local problems, it is diversity of placement in the network topology which is the driving force behind these distribution practices. Server placement should emphasize that diversity. Ideally, servers should be placed topologically near the points at which the operator exchanges routes and traffic with other networks.

      • Have to admit that for me any order that gets tagged as fraud where the customer sees them being called a fraud is not a company that I want to deal with. At no time should a customer see a label calling them a fraud.

If there’s an issue, it’s up to the sales team to follow up and make a judgement about the order.

I think time and time again folks here have shown that Maxmind and the other detection services make false positives.

Agreed 100%. I understand BurstNet using automatic fraud screening to speed-up the process but I agree the last word can’t be issued automatically. Times ago I just misunderstood one of the chars of the validation code used by Maxmind — informed via phone without previous notice I would receive that automatic phone call — and I was flagged immediately by the provider’s system as a fraudster.

        • I seriously doubt Maxmind would pick up on that. Maybe if the client information and what they had been doing had been reported as such to them.

Also remember that folks here in the US are innocent until proven guilty. Unless of course you actually believe VforVPS actually terminated all those client for spamming.

My concern, to clarify, is that if Maxmind or any other checker returns a fraud result, at no time should that be shown to the customer. You don’t call paying clients frauds. And if I saw such, I would take my business elsewhere.

Ordered one yesterday, and two tricks for those who bought it:
    1) Please use Windows 2008 only! Though it uses more RAM(3xx MB), its performance is MUCH better than Windows 2003 – I was getting a ridiculously low broadband speed at 8xx kbps on Win2003 but 88Mbps on Win2008. (http://goo.gl/2JANM)
    2) For those who found the Windows Update settings locked and “managed by system administrator”, delete the whole registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU . BurstNET applied some policies which prevents you to change the windows update settings. In addition, they set their windows update proxy as your update server.

And in general, I’m really satisfied yet – in terms of both price AND performance – considering the price and what I get. (HDD I/O Speed test: http://goo.gl/Z5ZxT)

Shame on WHMCS! they should improve it soon

  24. I keep receiving invoice overdue messages even tho I failed the verification and dont intend to send them anything that could allow for identity theft. Paypal should be as good as anything, after all, that is why they take their money.
I have been paying to many other places, including those that have maxmind on. I mean, they called my number, gave me PIN, I inserted it, and THEN you get to be a fraud ? After they verified you ? If you gonna ignore the PIN test why are you doing it, you pay a call in a foreign country just for fun ?
Something is seriously wrong and i dont believe these ppl are actually looking to sell low end boxes, because for 7 lousy bucks it’s a little overshoot. Do they actually expect to give up documents that can allow for identity theft just for a VPS ? Maybe they are a real company well established, but Sony is not exactly a newcomer either and they didnt even have firewalls…
I would rather give my money to a start-up that wont be here tomorrow, than put up with so much hassle for just a few bucks. Good luck to everyone that is happy with them, I have other VPSs for a long time (thanks LEB for giving great tips and advice) and so far nobody asked me for my shoe number yet…

I ordered the vps1 basic edition, found it slow as muck as compared to a few others I’ve recently used and so ordered an upgrade (paying for it immediately).

Now, 2 days later, I haven’t received the upgrade and getting nothing but run around emails about department x has to review it, and department y must look at it, and it should be done within 24 hours. Well it’s not.

What started off as a promising offer turned into a boat anchor as I wait for an upgrade or refund.

My take on Burst is – if you want anything other than the simplest default package, plan on pulling your hair out over their poor service.

It was responsive (but slow) for several days but now same problem as before only worse, depending on time of day. Linespeed not important for me but this Vps is not useable, 10 minutes before a reaction happens to a mouseclick. When I have time I will file another ticket.

Wondering if I am the only one experiencing this.

I ordered a VPS from them. The VPS itself was setup within a few minutes, the problem was with the DirectAdmin control panel which after 29 hours had still not been installed, nor had I been issued a license so I could install it. They agreed to refund my money which I thought only fair, but nearly 48 hours later, I still don’t have my refund. It seems that recently BurstNet service leaves a lot to be desired.

    June 6, 2011 @ 11:16 pm | Reply
    • DirectAdmin installs are licensed and installed manually, and can take awhile sometimes for us to complete. Most of our other delivery processes are automated, but in some cases of software licensing it is not yet, and may not be able to be automated. I’m sure our staff will respond to your ticket shortly, if they have not already.

The network connection was slow, so I didn’t use the VPS and requested a refund within a day of purchasing it and they wouldn’t refund me. They did a speedtest.net to prove their speed was good and they didn’t even get above 10Mbps. Support are also rude.

What I find interesting is that BurstNET have said that we’re getting more than our money’s worth at 10mbps. With that in mind, I’m able to max a 100mbit connection with 123systems’s $10/year Linux VPS offer as often as I want to. Luck doesn’t have anything to do with it — it’s just a matter of choosing a good provider vs Burst’s ‘amateur hour’ network.

        June 15, 2011 @ 7:04 pm | Reply
        • That is the most amusing thing I have read in months. ‘amateur hour’ ??? hahah….we just celebrated our 20th anniversary…if you thing we are amateurs, then your other hosts are still in the womb! Ridiculous…we have been in business longer than you are old probably…

10Mbps is more than getting your money’s work for a $5-$8 VPS. I supposed you are one of those people that think they should get a Dedicated Server for only $20/month too? Ridiculous…

I never said 10Mbps s what we strive for, or what it should be, only that you shouldn’t complain about 10Mbps, as you re getting more than you money’s worth for the price you are paying. If you think we are going to let 100Mbps constantly be pushed for $5-$8/month you are in fir a rude awaking, as no host will..they will eventually stop you, if the have the tools to even know you are doing it.

If you have an issue, open up a ticket on our support site (like you did when your order was having trouble). As far as “BURSTNET’s typo-riddled tirade”, he did create this company 20 years ago and I am happy he still has the same fever for it that he did when we started. As far as typo-riddled, I’m going to guess iphone auto correct as he usually does not have typos (Or that many typos). Everyone here cares deeply for the company and our customers.

  39. So in the end of my one month VPS with them it was all good except for one thing:

Severe packetloss after 8 days of purchase all the way until the end of the month. I sent a ticket and got really generic replies and therefore could not resolve the issue.

While we checked to see if it was Burst’s network, it didn’t appear so at the time, but a voice server in where everyone sees pings up to 5000ms and then times out (everyone not just a single person) and where packets were just being lost in the UDP, it was entirely unworthy.

This was resolved when we switched to another VPS provider not by Bursts network. So, I have no idea why the packetloss was so severe. Were on day 18 of uptime on the other VPS, and still working well with what I checked, no downtime or severe packetloss (appox. as high as 5% loss, but usually averaging around 0.25%).

Great prices and servers, questionable network but overall, it was ok. After the 16th day of my VPS of the month I just accepted the $2.50 or so loss and got another VPS. :/

      • Wow apologizes for never replying to this. I appear to have not set up my notification to this blog post.

Well it’s rather late response (lol) but yeah, I ended up leaving Burst due to the packetloss. I really liked the server though, very responsive and while only running two processes (A VoIP and SQL) whenever the packetloss wasn’t there, it was 100% perfect.

I might come back ;) – Your UK packages look nice and the packetloss hasn’t made me completely run in the other direction. It just sucks when your VPS drops your RDP connection and everything else when players are on the Game Server (other dedi – not on Bursts network or company) and have to wait 3-6 minutes and deal with connecting manually over and over again every 30 minutes. Not generally the best thing.

I’ll be watching your new UK packages for my SQL again, as our dedi server has moved over to Europe that uses the SQL remotely. Once again you guys have great support, servers, and are very decent for the budget you offer. The packetloss just caused the biggest problem.

Submitted a ticket a few days ago about my issue with slow speeds. Was seeing speedtest.net tests of 4.5mbps down and over 30mbps up. Support gave me the usual speech about VPS being contained within a shared environment, etc. and eventually moved my ticket to a Windows admin who said that there wasn’t anything else that they could do for me.

This is especially disappointing because the service was great for 3 weeks before going to hell the last week as my renewal was coming up. I ended up canceling because of the poor speeds.

        • You do pay more for your home broadband that you do for the VPS, yes? Our point is the issue with VPS is that it’s shared resources. At any one point, another container sharing your node may do something to cause everyone else to grind to a halt.

As BurstNET stated, we recently implemented some auto-checking for things that violate our TOS and AUP, which should be a huge help to everyone.

  42. Please do yourself a favor and stay away from these people. I had a server unavailable (after they pushed a load of Windows updates to the nodes) for about four (yes, four) days. No chance of a refund, and I had to pay for a full month of service with a server that won’t boot, when I canceled one day into the next billing period.

I also tried out their backup service, and canceled that, and they keep on pestering me to pay the invoice that isn’t due.

I had a support ticket DELETED by them, instead of responding to it. Obviously they think I will pay the invoice if they ignore me by deleting tickets.

    • BurstNET Customer Service:

      Andy G,

I am not aware of a situation in which any clients were left offline for four days due to Windows updates. BurstNET would neither knowingly leave services unreachable, particularly without some sort of communication with the affected client(s), nor would we delete tickets without responding. There may be more to the situation than you realize. If you can produce at least one ticket number, I would be glad to research the situation and determine what happened.

      October 30, 2011 @ 8:45 pm | Reply
      • Wow, you respond faster to web forum posts than to tickets posted into your support system. But I digress.

The first issue was the unavailability of my VPS. I raised a support ticket (100-2912504) and got a response (http://TriviURL.com/39). So, the essential point here is that things are broken, and the “best thing” I could do was “wait”. So, I waited. And waited. I did not get an email from your support team advising me that the updates had completed, so when I next went to my VPS control panel (this was probably on Oct 16 or 17) I was still unable to start my VPS. I canceled my VPS service on the morning of Oct 17, being still unable to start the service (naughty, naughty, I shouldn’t be doing that should I? Perhaps I was just being feckless or optimistic

Several communications with “Jennifer B” at your support desk, have ended with me being told that I am not entitled to a refund for the service being unavailable, both at the end of the first billing period, and also for the one or two days at the start of the following billing period. As I was too late to cancel the second month (I missed the one day grace period by one day), I effectively paid for one month of service for one or two days of totally unavailable VPS.

The second issue concerns my backup service. Well, not actually the service, as that seemed to be okay, but the VPS issue made me think twice, so I canceled the backup service too. Now, I know I DID cancel this service with plenty of time to spare, and you even sent me a confirmation email on Oct 18 (http://TriviURL.com/3A). Notice the highlighted portion telling me that invoices will be automatically voided out. So, imagine my surprise when you kept on sending me reminder emails (including two yesterday, 13 minutes apart). I have raised this issue with you on tickets 22941649, 2932963 as well as the DELETED ticket 2940320 (screen grab here: http://TriviURL.com/3B ) with no success.

I have given up hope of getting credit for the VPS after my communications with “Jennifer B”, which is partly why I am happy to share my experience with other VPS’ers, so I will just settle for confirmation from you that the backup service invoice will just get canceled out, as it should have been some time ago. Thank you.
