CHVPS - $2.59 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Switzerland

CHVPS James from CHVPS has informed us of a 35% OFF promotion that they were running until the end of March by using their 1JEWE9 coupon code when ordering. Their already impressive pricing is now even more affordable for those of you looking for a VPS in Switzerland (“Equinix Zurich 4” to be specific). They offer a wide range of VPSs but the 2 that fit the bill we’re all looking for are:

Cirrus 1

  • RAM – 256 MB
  • Burst – 512 MB
  • Disk Space – 20 GB
  • Bandwidth – 1 TB
  • $2.59/Month with promotion.
  • Order Link

Cirrus 2

  • RAM – 512 MB
  • Burst – 1024 MB
  • Disk Space – 40 GB
  • Bandwidth – 1 TB
  • $6.49/Month with promotion.
  • Order Link

Test IP: 46.19.136.1
100MB Test File

The domain was registered in 06/2011 making it 3 months shy of a year old but still a good sign. Their WHOIS information is public and shows the domain registered to “Private Layer INC” with an address in Panama (and their sites claims they are a Panama Corporation). They appear to have redundant DNS which should be standard these days but is worth noting. They have had 3 other offers posted in the past with the earliest being July of last year so there are hundreds of comments to scan through for an idea of what others have experienced. Setup time takes 1-12 hours according to their website so keep that in mind when ordering. They appear to have their own ASN from RIPE with only a single BGP peer (Red Transit LLC) for both IPv4 and IPv6 but still another good sign.

Lastly, their website is very simple but well laid out and easy to navigate. Information is pretty scarce though so it might be in your best interest to contac them via their live chat and ask some questions before ordering just to make sure you know what you are signing up for.

VPS is not the stablest one but performance relatively acceptable.

    CPU model : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
    Number of cores : 1
    CPU frequency : 1200.074 MHz
Total amount of ram : 512 MB
Total amount of swap : 0 MB
    Download speed : (5.57MB/s)
    I/O speed : 34.1MB/s
    Uptime : up 13 days, 11:53, 1 user, load average: 0.09, 0.08, 0.03

In case that someone ask… no IPv6 ready yet. Some year ago they started with “it will be next month”, sometimes they say “open support ticket” just to get another “it’s not ready yet, it will be soon” story. At some point they even advertised IPv6 in WHT offer. So for those LEB users which require IPv6 – wherever CHVPS say in public “IPv6 will be available soon/IPv6 will be available next month” is false advertising.

it looks like they host quite a few shady sites:

    http://google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=AS:51852
    http://www.malwareurl.com/ns_listing.php?as=AS51852

and in past they hosted Constantinos’ Hostrail too.

Those ratings are in no way indicative. Look at Google’s:

      http://sitevet.com/db/asn/AS15169

ThePlanet, Limestone Networks and other major providers are also listed with very high “badness ratings” – Any provider that’s been in business with lots of traffic could be.

I agree with Ivraatiems, that homepage doesn’t seem to be a very good indiction of anythning. Both the AS of my Hetzner server and the AS of my home ISP are rated as Yes on almost all classes.

Umm.. I believe you can’t “merge” both servers together to create one big one..

well, use one for SQL+imap and the other one for web and you’re sorted. Actually if you manage to get them on different nodes then you’re more than sorted because even when one goes down the other one may be still up

I had a openvz from CHVPS and what should i say… the speed was terrible, the nodes are massive oversold and the network speed varies from good to ‘what? speed?’

The best the vserver is chanceled since months now but still online and accessible with my data on it…

What if the VPS provisioned again after order by another customer? Isn’t automatically created a new one?

I also ever have this kind of case with Santrex when I first come to the VPS world, but no one can access it, because the don’t know the password.

I bought a VPS from them two days ago and it took them until today to set my VPS up and running. Just when I decided to let this go, I realized that I can’t control my VPS from my panel at all. The root password that they generated for me doesn’t work and I can’t even reset it.

I strongly advise you to stay away from this service provider. I am very disappointed and will ask for a full refund right now.

if you used a “+” for a gmail address, then you won’t receive it since they don’t format the address properly. I accidentally signed up twice and found this out the hard way with my paid account going to the + filtered address. check your paypal receipt for the client id and reset pass from privatelayer site.

I signed up with them and did a scp transfer of like 6-7GB’s from another server and trying to unpack some file recursively. I got 5-6MBps with the transfer but they shutdown the server like an hour later for “container high load” affecting other nodes. this is my first experience buying a VPS and and i don’t want to be warned for doing basic things. If scp and unrar constitute high usage and warrants suspension, what good is it for? I’m going to try installing a blog or something since it’s only been two days.

    Brought one of these yesterday.

    Provisioned rather quickly +1
    Yum update + Setup OpenVPN PPTPD(20 mins) – no tun/pptp >
Ticket asking for RDNS, with a reply to the same(moments afterwards) to enable TUN + PPTP
(Next morning)First of the two replys was read, RDNS done(Ticket Closed), TUN/PPTP third reply(Reopen+Reminder)
Shortly after, its all working as intended. Restart openvpn. Out of time(EASTER FRIDAY WOO-Anti geek day)
12 hours later back home. Service has been suspended:

    Dear SomeGuy

This email is intended to inform you that your VPS has been suspended for 24
hours due to high CPU overload coming from it, affecting the Hardware Node where many
    more clients reside.

The container has been using more than 100% of the resources allocated to it,
and we cant allow this by any means, since our main goal is to guarantee a
stable and reliable service to all our clients.

We urge you to get back to us regarding ths, with a plan of action to make sure
    this doesnt happen again.

    Sincerely,

    Private Layer – Support Team
    PL SO-01

    ———-
OpenVPN isnt in use yet, I’ve yet to test its functionality – simply ran out of time!
Interested to see their reply. First of its kind with many LEB providers! Not one complaint, not one suspension. Until now, HAPPY EASTER ALL :)

It could just be automated I guess, without getting into it and having a look I cannot see if its actually consuming anything while its sitting idle, and no way is the above an attack, just my experience thus far.

Speeds are great, a 100mb.test from cachefly 3.2seconds (first thing I tested)
Support has been speedy enough too. Their client panel is pretty fly.
I didn’t manage to run any I/O stuff or benchmarking stuff. Not keen, might trigger the ‘load’ limit

      April 6, 2012 @ 11:22 am | Reply
      • kro:

Support is pretty slack. I guess they look at the last line of the last ticket and not to bother with all the tickets since their last response. I guess opening a ticket per post is the method to bypass this human laziness.

Box is back up. But my load averages are 0.45 0.24 0.14 (example) with ONE OpenVPN user active (EEEEEKKK it needs to handle a few more than that!)
So I turned openvpn off(Only thing I require it for) as I’m too scared about being suspended…

Trying to think of another ‘low CPU’ reason to keep the thing.

    STAY AWAY!!

I bought a VPS from them, took over 24 hours to set up, after that, the IPv6 was PISS POOR SLOW (COMPLETELY UNUSABLE), I also asked them to give me more IPv6 addresses, which then they said they are ‘working on’, 4 days later, many many support tickets and phone calls to ALL of their VOIP lines, no answer.

They are ignoring me, ignoring my request for a refund (after 4 days of unusable service, IPv6 service was not delivered). This is a SHAMEFUL company and I highly recommend you STAY away from CHVPS/PrivateLayer
They say they have ’24/7′ support, when really it is 3 people who don’t give two shits at all. There is no 24/7 support here AT ALL, their phone lines DO NOT work, and they do not answer email service.

If you need a European VPS (Switzerland included) go to EDIS.AT, my VPS was set up almost instantly, my tickets are replied to within 15 minutes and they truely care about their customers.

I can provide proof of server for both places, aswell as I will be posting all the logs of the “support chat” that took place.
