Colo-Serv - CAD$6.50 128MB OpenVZ VPS in Canada with DDoS Protection

Colo-Serv Would you pay a bit more each month for DDoS protection? After experiencing our last DDoS fiasco, I think a lot of webmasters (do they still use this term??) would be willing to pay a bit more in exchange with peace of mind. Colo-Serv seem to think so. Alexandre from Colo-Serv sent me two offers last week. One is exactly the same as last time — CAD$5.50 for 128MB/15GB/300GB OpenVZ VPS. ToS prohibits the use of IRC there — unless you pay $1 more :)

For $6.50/month, you get a DDoS-protected, IRC-enabled VPS with the following spec:

  • 128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 300GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ

Direct sign up link. Servers with Canix Datacenter in Montreal, Canada and they own all their equipments. They have been providing premium range of VPS products and got some pretty good reviews from their last post.

With DDoS protection, however, it’s like buying insurance. You pay a bit of premium each month in the hope that it would defend you when the undesirable event occurs. However when the day of reckoning finally arrived, sometimes you just can’t be sure that it actually works! They do have a page explaining the system they use, although I am not too sure whether the same system is deployed for their low cost VPS line.

Our VPS DDoS protected are design sepcially for IRC use.
Due to the filtering of each ports, running web service or streaming is not the ideal on this network.

This network is not the same protection than our DDoS Protection by proxy mitigation that is design
for protecting website on any kinds of DDoS attacks by dns redirection for unlimited duration.

The network for the VPS use is on rate limit for udp or synflood. It’s a basic DDoS protection.

OK then, I’m lost. Are we saying that these VPSes should only be used for IRC?

        • No you can use them for web hosting also but due to filtration, the ping can be slower than on the Premiuim network. So for gaming, or streaming, it’s not ideal.

        • Okay then in that case I think it’s probably not suitable for web hosting, where DDoS is mostly often occurred these days (rather than IRC).

I have a Colo-Serv VPS with 144 days uptime now and I see this DDoS-protected offer as a bad thing. It remembers the TheNYNOC 2009 fiasco. At that time TheNYNOC was doing well selling cheap VPS at $60/year when they announced the “DDoS protection” and attracted zillions of attackers causing lots of extended outages. Colo-Serv is putting in risk the network and the business of its customers just to make 1 extra buck.

      I fully agree to that!

      • It’s not because you host IRC that the network will be more at risk, remember lowendbox few weeks ago …
Every websites/providers receive a lot of DDoS attacks every days, that’s the part of the game.

By this i presume you mean by saying DDoS protected script kiddies will test it? Guess that’s true.

That is ridiculous. And the ddos protected network is completed separate so even if it was attacked your
vps on the non-ddos protected network would be fine.

Ridiculous? Ridiculous is a first-class provider oriented to business users offering IRC. It is asking for problems.

Anyway, it is no longer a problem for me as I just cancelled the VPS.

      • Yes the DDoS protected network is separate than the other Network. Francisco, did you experience a down time since 144 Days on the premium Network ?. We do IRC business since 2005 with Shell-Expert Communications, we started the hosting business with this company, than we move all divisions to Colo-Serv.

      @Sam

Script kiddies maybe test it but more important people with sites under attack and irc users will bring their troubles to an excellent provider (until now).

So most your VPS providers don’t allow IRC? Are you sure that you checked their TOS carefully as most LEB featured hosts allow it without any issues. All winners from last Best Low End Providers in 2011 list allow it and still they are considered as most popular LEB featured hosts…

      • If you take a look on our previous post and comments : http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/colo-serv-cad5-50-128mb-openvz-vps-in-canada/ . DDoS protected network was there to allow IRC and since the bigining of the company, so please don’t tell us that we were a good provider until now Francisco when you have a VPS with us since 144 days without any problems :)

I have 2 vps with colo-serv.net never had a issues at all from both networks , irc vps uptime = 155 days, web vps = 148 days …. so dont be affraid of doing business with them since both network are not even on the same routing hardware and not even using the same uplinks irc is mainly tata communications or tinet and for the web they uses other provider so if the irc network get’s ddos the premium one with no irc will be still up and running fine

  4. We had several services from Colo-Serv since a couple of years and now on their dedicated hosting. We never had any trouble on each network, ddos or premium. I saw their installation in Canix Datacenter, this is just amazing. This is one of the most stable provider I ever seen.

    Keep on good work Alexandre!

Is this regular pricing? Like if I buy in 3-4 months (dont need it now) will there be a high probability
of the $6.50 price still being available.
