Every traceroute yields Yellowfiber.net at last few hops.

The ad is a bit deceptive. CommercialMedia doesn’t directly deal with any upstream provider.

It appears that CommercialMedia colos in YellowFiber’s space, presumed to be in Equinix Ashburn.

YellowFiber has their “own network”. That network is dual homed with nLayer and Abovenet being their upstream providers:

can you verify your server is online and working ?

On the other hands, I wonder that after they setup the server,if we need technical support when we will get it? 6 days later? it can ruin the business, because they are not answering tickets quickly.

I signed up for one the Thursday before last. This is just stupid. I also opened a ticket a few days ago yet not response…

When I asked them for a refund they processed it right away so I know someone is reading the tickets but they only reply to tickets they feel like replying to, kinda rude I think..
Also I think they went about this the wrong way for one yeah they should not have released new stock until they have completed the current orders, even if they were upfront and mention initially that orders may take up to 2 weeks that I could understand but to say 3 days then delayed to 5 days then another 3-7 days that’s just aggravating!

But seriously, the reason for the delay is because people are buying these things up because it is a GOOD DEAL. If you’re not willing to wait 2 weeks for an amazing deal then you need to sit down and rethink some things about life. ;)

I canceled mine cause they were not even responding to my ticket, and also seems unfair that I was one of the first few to have ordered this yet my order was delayed! it’s aggravating to say the least no big deal would rather pay a bit more from a more established company. good luck with your server!

Well, i ordered mine on the 27th. I contacted them yesterday after 5 Business days. They replayed to my ticket saying:

    Dear Customer,
Due to the quantity of dedicated servers ordered and the time it takes to provision and load each server your order has been postponed approximately 3-5 business days. Thanks for your patience. Please call or email us with any questions you may have.
    Thank You.

What kind of company says they have servers in stock and let their customers around 2 weeks to receive it. I asked for a refund on the days they’ve waisted..

well technically it should be one month when you receive your server, it would not make sense if you are charged from the purchase date cause if it took them two months to deploy your server then you would be paying for services unrendered..

Yeah I contacted them about this issue. I got my server few days ago but it only came with half the ram it was supposed to (8gb) so I talked to them and they are going to move my billing date forward to the date I actually get the full specs I paid for. They just said contact billing once you get the full server.

A similar offer is available from WholeSaleInternet ( https://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1233849 ). Their spec (Ram & HDD) is lower, but from the point of view of network and support they are way better that this offer. Server are deployed within two to three days and support tickets are responded within a reasonable amount of time.

Looking at the way CM are ignoring support tickets, I doubt they will respond quickly when there is an emergency.

      February 3, 2013 @ 11:37 am | Reply
      • There should never be an “emergency” for a $35/month dedicated server. If you are hosting anything that cannot afford a day or 2 of downtime then a single hard drive, unmanaged dedicated server for $35 is not your solution. If you need 100% uptime then purchase 2 dedicated servers in different geographic locations with RAID1 minimum and redundant power supplies.

To be perfectly blunt, this is the definition of a disposable server. Treat it like a toy, not an investment, not a business foundation, not a lifeline, and especially not a mission critical platform. I am not saying that this server will not be reliable or stable, I’m saying that at $35/month you need to treat it like a $3.50/month VPS. Hope for the best, expect the minimal, and plan for the worst.

That being said, all tickets submitted by me and my co-workers were responded to within minutes of contacting them, and we work the night shift so all tickets are submitted after business hours for them so that’s a huge plus in my book.

I understand some of you have been waiting 4+ weeks for your server, that sucks. I also understand that you can only provision so many servers a day before it becomes a work hazard for the techs.

Seriously though, this is an amazing deal. You cannot colocate a server with these specs for $35/month with a quality network (after having used nLayer I consider them top quality and having a 2nd upstream for redundancy is just icing on the cake at this point) and a 100Mbps unmetered port (even at Joe’s Datacenter it will cost at least 3 times this for unmetered 100Mbps).

You are within your right to complain and voice you opinion, but the negativity towards a company who is providing something that nobody else can offer is just depressing to see.

Full disclosure: I received a voicemail from one of their staff a few weeks ago with a “special offer” if I ordered some servers in bulk. The special offer was not even as good as the offer they are providing to LEB so if anybody should be upset with them it should be me. I stilled ordered one of these servers anyways and referred 2 other sales to them because the deal is just to hard to pass up.

          @Kujoe,

My servers are at least Raid-1 and this one is no exception. I have ordered with two hard-discs. And I do have backup server to minimize downtime.

Please ignore my comment on network as I did not get a chance to compare them. Today I opened a billing related ticket and WSI replied within 5 minutes. I didn’t expect them to reply my ticket within 5 minutes on Sunday. They did it and I appreciate that.

My only complaint is that they are not replying support tickets. I wrote to Mike and he responded within 3 minutes (Thanks Mike). Whereas my same support ticket was left idle for several days.

I do not open ticket to fix my server software issues. However I do expect a service provider to respond, within a reasonable time frame, during hardware failure / network outages. Now if you think this is unreasonable then I do not agree to that.

Unmanaged server doesn’t mean – people should bear a downtime of 2-3 days before opening a support tickets. Unmanaged server means – user is responsible for software part and service provider is responsible for hardware and network.

Hetzner’s Robot can also handle OS reloads (easy text based interface, answer a few questions: type of RAID, partitions,, OS choice, and it does the rest–it’s faster than OVH’s graphic auto OS installer too), Limestone Networks, Softlayer, Singlehop, _____ (insert a long list of other dedicated providers here who use their own server control panels and don’t use some off the shelf crap for server management)

It is probably safe to say though that the vast majority of the dedicated hosting companies that use off the shelf billing systems like WHMCS don’t have the technical know-how (and/or financial resources) to create a server/customer management control panel that can handle auto os reloads.

“I don’t consider one company out of thousands to be “most companies”.”

I don’t consider the majority of those “thousands” who offer dedicated servers to be what I would even call companies. Buying a few second hand servers on eBay and offering them for sale, registering a domain, leasing WHMCS, slapping a template on a website, and posting an offer on WHT doesn’t automatically make someone a real company (if it did then every 8-year-old with a lemonade stand would be the CEO of a “real” company).

      • Very nice! But lets do some side-by-side comparisons for completeness sake:

        CM Special = $35/Month
SingleHop similar server with 50% RAM, 4x drives, and ~1/3rd bandwidth = $239/Month
LSN similar server with slow CPUs, 25% RAM, smaller HDD, and ~1/5th bandwidth = $215/Month

        At $25 per OS install:
You can afford to pay for 8 installs a month and still be cheaper than SingleHop.
You can afford to pay for 3 installs a month and still be cheaper than LSN.

While I’m not saying these companies do not provide other services/features, I am saying that for $35/month, you can’t complain to much if they don’t offer the same features as a multi-million dollar data center. They are able to provide the same server for $35/month because they do not have the overhead of building and maintaining a custom panel or the upkeep of a infrastructure that utilizes that custom panel.

The main reason I am even investing any effort in defending CM is because they are the first to provide us (here at LEB) a really cheap server with server grade hardware. If other companies have this ability, but see these comments of people attacking the company for not being on the same level as the much larger data centers mentioned above, then what incentive will they have to offer these plans for us? Why would somebody want to give us a $10/month dedicated server if it will end up as bad press and negative reviews/comments on Google? They took a chance by offering something that nobody else has and, in my eyes, the results of their risk were negative reviews that show up on Google when somebody searches for their company name.

you have not even received your server but you treat their word like it’s the bible just cause they give the illusion that this deal is really sustainable.. I would rather pay the same price with less resources like Datashack/Wholesaleinternet but have my ticket replied to and actually have my server ready in the time frame they mentioned you also get things like IPMI for free rather than CM who wants to nickel and dime you to death like a $25 for an OS reload and god knows what other type of charges.. they dont even have the courtesy to say a thing or two here on LET considering how much business LEB is throwing their way, that in it’s self speaks volumes of the service they offer.. If the service is bad no matter how cheap the price is it’s still a bad deal in my opinion.

“They took a chance by offering something that nobody else has and, in my eyes, the results of their risk were negative reviews that show up on Google when somebody searches for their company name.”

The negative reviews are deserved because this is the 3rd time they have offered a deal similar to this one (similar deals were also offered on WHT last year under both their CM and MegaColo brands note: WHT later pulled the offer posts) and the results have been the same all 3 times: unable to deliver on what they promised in the time frame stated in the offers, a failure to communicate delays in delivery to customers, failure to communicate in general with many support tickets going unanswered.

The same complaints are being raised now that were raised after their offers last year. They should have fixed the customer service/delivery issues that arose last year instead of repeating them. If you don’t have the manpower, or inventory on hand, to deliver/setup x number of servers in 3 days then you should either limit the number of servers available to an amount you can deliver in 3 days, or state upfront before the customer pays that the delivery time may be up to 2 weeks. As far as ignoring support tickets or letting them go unanswered for days, “low end” pricing is not an excuse for poor customer service.

“another odd thing was that paypal had a 5 day hold on the refund not sure what that was all about”

That usually means the refund amount is greater than the seller’s current PayPal balance so the refund is being partially covered by a transfer from the seller’s bank account and they put a 5-day hold for the incoming funds transfer to clear.

Hmm looks like if your in the UK you have to pay 1.2 cents per minute to call the US/CA this is new to me unfortunately the minmum credit you can buy is $10 but I heard from another member on LET that you can refund your unused credit right after.. no sure if it’s worth the hassle now

Actually if you have a VPS with a US IP you can tunnel with putty and create a new gmail account based in the US then you should technically be able to get free calls to US/CA same way you would tunnel to watch Hulu.. just make sure you don’t open that gmail account with your UK IP.

i am still waiting for the server to be delivered from CM.
from my phone conversations.. i was told few 100’s of order came in and that is why it takes longer to setup the server … and only about 40 or so are setup per day…

got me thinking if 40 per day and i ordered almost 3 weeks .. say 5 days a week then its 15×40=600 plus servers that is huge number.. i do build and setup servers as part of my work and i do feel its possible to putup 40 servers a day with good support team.

funny thing i can not find order links other than the which was posted here…
and other thing to note is that they are refunding people who ask for it [atleast in most cases i think]….

i am suppose to get the server delivered mid of next week.. and i hope so.. if not i am gonna ask for a refund…

It’s really an unpleasant feeling, as I’m afraid about how long we’ll have to wait if some hardware fails on these servers, to get that hardware replaced…

    So before 10 days I Ordered a server…

Then I created a ticket saying when will it show up..
No one replied for two days so I opened a new ticket saying (REFUND NOW)
After they read it they send me this message.

    http://prntscr.com/tjsl9

So yeah I didn’t ask for a refund cos it was only 2 more days to wait…
after 2 days I opened a ticket saying you said you will deploy the server yesterday..
    No reply of course.

So I opened a ticket at thursday (2 days later) saying refund again..
Then 5 hours later I got this message :)

    http://prntscr.com/tjsra

    Niggas i win…
So after 3 hours now I opened a ticket saying I want to buy more IP’s
It was responded within 4minutes (WTF) they are 24/7 but all they care about is munnay

  107. My server was set up today after a friendly, very apologetic phone conversation yesterday. Yes, it took nearly a month. But the server is extremely nice for the price.

My billing period was readjusted correctly, so no “paying for no service” has occured. As I’ve said elsewhere on this site, offers like this are prone to problems. Don’t expect time-critical responses for things like this. Always have backups, data AND hardware.

So to sum it up – it takes time, but you do get it!

And on a side note – they do sound friendly enough on the phone, and support is not hard to get a hold of – if they miss your first call, they answer on the second..or the third.

      2) Madman, you must be mad, man. http://alpha.tritonone.com is what I’m currently hosting on it. I waited nearly a month, yes. But as I’ve said, it was worth it. The specs are listed here: http://puu.sh/28jvv

if you server gets down, what you gonna do, you will go to the data center?

There is no excuse to response the calls, they were answering.
now there is no response and they write it down on their web site. we are open 24 hours.

        • > Anyone else? show your server. this server could be scam too.

How dare you accuse me of attempting to defraud here? I’m posting these comments to give people hope. You can gladly look at the other website linked in my name to show this isn’t bullshit. I have nothing to gain from praising this company.

          > abeansits, can you say that, who could work with firm which does not response
          > tickets and calls.
          > if you server gets down, what you gonna do, you will go to the data center?

You can’t expect instant responses at that price. Stop being so naive and childish. Do not host critical services on a server that costs you just over a dollar a day. Only the completely brainless would do such a thing.

          > There is no excuse to response the calls, they were answering.
          > now there is no response and they write it down on their web site. we are open 24
          > hours.

Open 24 hours does NOT mean 24 hour phone support. As others have said, major issues post setup are being handled fast.

          > and Where they are?

          Try reading their website.

          > in addition this, I could say that, I also called out of usual working hours, and they can answer it.

All of you who say I’m from CommercialMedia, please check my history here. You’ll see that I’ve been active for a while, waiting for my server, asking people questions about their server, beeing angry about waiting for mine etc. But on the end I did get it.

Ice – my server is in the same DC as yours I beleive – IP itself is marked to be in Baltimore. Ping reply to EU is around 150ms – just like yours. And I did get a block of IP’s (e.g. 1,2,4,5) and not mixed up IP’s :)

MadMan – I don’t host a website on my server, really, for webhosting I’d just rent a VPS, or go with shared hosting – it would be cheaper and just about as good. I’ll be using mine for VPS’s.

When I was waiting for three weeks to get my server, and I was getting those answers in the line of -your server will be up tomorrow (and I was prolonged that way for about two weeks), my trust was well, not very high either, but believe it or not, they did deliver, and they delivered in full specs – as I mentioned, I did remind them, that I want the full specs server, a few times !

So before you make judgments that I’m from CommercialMedia, check my previous posts, and posts of other people who you accuse of being from CommercialMedia.

Beleive what you will – I got my server, I know Ice got his, and a few others. That all I can say.

If you don’t trust you’ll get your server, just ask for a refund like a lot of people here did, and they all said they got it – read a little. Opening a dispute should be the last option, not just in this case, in any case, you should always try to make things right with the ‘seller’ before you go opening a PayPal dispute.

    That’s my 5 cents.

in this case, i dont need to know you better than you.

I am just looking the promisse about servers.

They always say tomorrow, next week, we will order 100 servers. we are waiting.

it seem reasonable for while but now, sorry, it is not reality,
i found that my recurring payment waiting on the hook.
if i didnt notice and cancel that, they will get my money again. and then?
they will make budget for next server request.
yes i see that the strategy, making server money from last commers and make server online a little bit slow.
but it is the honest or optimist opinion about them.

in reality , we want servers, not the background check or other bullshit!
because we pay and we have to wait for what?
you didnt say anything about it.

Sorry dont hence, it is reality there are majority of people who dont have servers.
and minority says they are reliable. it is kind of weird :)

and I am waiting that this funny advertisement how will show it self.

I can give money for people who need it. but I am paying bill to make business.

I ordered 2 servers about 40 days ago….and at this point I have 1 server activated with half the promised RAM. They have not billed me for the 2nd month on the pending server but obviously did on the one they delivered with 1/2 the RAM. I can’t even get them to cancel the pending server :) No reply. So support, in summary, is insanely bad. I was totally greedy and got sucked in to the amazing offer – so I accept its largely my fault.

I guess you have to ask yourself what you would use servers from commercialmedia for. I was initially planning on using them as testing/dev webservers – nothing mission critical obviously. But after 40 days of contemplation you start wondering if putting anything at all on their servers makes sense because you obviously cannot trust them to act in a timely fashion in event of failure. You start thinking about putting entirely hobby stuff on them…throw away stuff. Then you may conclude that for utilizing them in this fashion 35 is actually not a great deal. Get a little vps, mess with it, start again etc.

For me I got a nice e3-1245v2 32GB ram from OVH for my test box- $89/mo. Got setup in less than 1 hour. They have decent management tools. I opened a ticket and they replied within 10 minutes. Good luck to everyone waiting on Commercial Media. And to anyone considering signing up…think twice. If you want to stay closer to the price they offer maybe checkout wholesaleinternet.

Just like to update you all. I’ve had my server for around 2 moths now, support seemed pretty fine for me at first.. their support aren’t as good as other companies.. I had to send the same support ticket once in a while to make them reply to it.

Then on Thursday night me server died with no access to SSH, nothing. I tried contacting their support quite kindly asking what’s up, but they seemed to simply ignored it. The day after i sent another one and no luck, so I rang them up to see if they’d respond but it simply just goes to voicemail. It seems they hibernate when ever something goes wrong. I sent them an email yesterday that I’m fed up and that i basically want a refund and my data back but still had no success from them..

Rather pathetic really, I guess i’ve learned to go with more reliable hosts like OVH or Hetzner. I lost a few customers because of this, and I’ve basically given my money away to some idiots.

Commercial Media review after two months:

I’ve ordered this server offered in this thread from them about three months ago, and I was promised I’ll receive my server in about a week – no problem, it was a great deal, and I understood that they have a lot of orders, so no problem, I can wait a week.

After that week has passed, still no server, I contact them and I’ve been told I’ll get it the next day, and still no server two days after…call them, and they promised me I’ll get it that same day, the next day at latest — well that went on for about three weeks. And after about 1 month since I’ve ordered (and paid!) for my server, I finally received it.

Everything seemed good from then on – they apologized to me, told me how overwhelmed with the orders they were, and that finally now they had things completely under control, and apologized to me again.

After about one month and a half after I have received my server, the server started to restart/crash by itself for no apparent reason – even when I wasn’t running anything on it.. so I contacted the support – first open a nice ticket, explaining my problem, and asking them to have a look, as I have already tried everything to eliminate software issue, and RAM tests completed OK as well, just like HDD tests. But whenever I did anything CPU intensive (and many times, when it was just simply idling), the server crashed. So I assumed it was a HW problem, and I hoped they’d check it out, replace the CPU or whatever..

I was wrong, they ignored my ticket altogether, and after one day I called them, and I just kept ringing – I must have called them about 20 times, before someone finally answered (it was Jake), and he assured me they’ll have a look at my server ASAP, and that I’ll get my ticket replied to with the details. Okay, great! And then everything went quiet – no email, no nothing from them for another day, so I called them again. Even after more than 20 calls, to all of their numbers, at all possible times (yes, I called during their working hours!), nobody answered ! I opened another few tickets, send another few emails, tried calling a few more times, without any success…

So finally I go ahead, and I cancel my service within their WHMCS control panel, and guess what ? They even ignored my cancellation request!

In the beginning, when I finally received my server, one of their employees – Mike – told me “we are honest people here at CM” – yeah, sure you are. If they’re honest people there, then I must be the Pope, and the last time I’ve checked, I wasn’t :)

There you have it – my review of Commercial Media.

So to sum it all up:
-Support is TERRIBLE !!! You just can’t reach them no matter what you do – and even if you do, they’ll tell you they’ll get right on it, and then ignore you and your issues.
-They ignore support tickets all together, ignore emails and phone calls – so no way to get them
-Server’s are old and used up, probably bought off ebay for some pocket change, and when they fail (and they will!), you won’t be able to get any support from them what so ever !

So stay away from Commercial Media !! They are just a bunch of clowns, that should work in a circus, and not in a hosting business.

This is just getting funny now :)

After all these days.. I finally get a response on one of my open support ticket’s — maybe it’s because I’ve opened a PayPal dispute.

Well, my server has finally crashed compleatly, and it’s unreachable. And I get a reply from them:

‘There is nothing wrong with the hardware. We are able to ping the hardware just fine.
Again, we can’t support any applications on the server.’

And what they were pinging was the GATEWAY !!! Unbelievable !

Anyway, if they can ping it, it’s all good. It doesn’t matter that the server crashes 5 times per day, if they can ping the gateway, the server is fine… and if there is anything wrong.. it’s your fault! Server does’t crash because of a HW problem, it’s always SW…as they told me in their reply:

‘You may want to consider a managed hosting company that will be able to troubleshoot your application issues or hire and pa a consultant to additionally assist.’

Of course… they can ping the GATEWAY, so my SERVER is fine ??????! I’m in IT for 15 years now, and I guess I have not learned a thing in this time, because if you can ping the GATEWAY, the SERVER is fine…. !!!!

Oh and whenever I mention that they didn’t reply to my emails, support tickets, or that they don’t even answer their phone calls, even when you call more than 20 times per day…. of course.. they ignore that you mentioned it, and accuse you that you have no idea what you are doing, and that if the server crashed, it was your fault anyway, and that they will NOT do anything about it. They won’t even bother to restart the server for you…

Because I’ve left it longer that 45 days to request a refund, PayPal won’t accept my case via the resolution centre!

And as many of you here are aware, I’m more likely to win the lottery than get a reply form these guys!

So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Commercial Media is a complete scam. They’ve screwed me over as well. I tried backing out and cancelling and getting a refund after waiting months with them not delivering….they just ignore you. Oh well. Funny thing is that they are now charging $125/mo for these dual l5420 boxes. Insane. I’m not out that much money so I am considering just letting it go…its such a waste of time writing tickets and getting no response …but on principal I’m having a hard time just letting them essentially steal from me. Hard to fight it when they just don’t respond. They don’t care about their reputation – so what is there left to do?

Contacted my bank and they’ve issued a chargeback on the PayPal payment.

As you say Sam, not much money, but it’s the principle, essentially they’ve stolen my (and others) funds!

Hey Elijah thanks for the advice. I’ll look into what it takes to get a chargeback as well. Good luck!

sighs.. even for personal use if i use it.. i have a good chance of losing all the data.. feel just not worth the trouble..

    UPDATE:
Renewed my server about a week ago, while my server was down thinking it would come back up. About 10 minutes I disputed my claim on PayPal and got a refund in 5 minutes.. the quickest thing they have ever done. Lost all of my data though. Don’t bother going with these idiots.

I decided to dig further and saw Maryland (the state they do business in) has a court search. Typing in Commercial Media I found this:

Looks like they can not pay the rent and owe $14k. Likely they owe money to other people like their provider if they are not even paying the rent!

I have moved all of my files and customers I resold their service to, to another provider already… It looks like this company is going under.

You can see their case history also (http://casesearch.courts.state.md.us/inquiry/inquiry-index.jsp), click accept and submit. On next page click Company Name and put in Commercial Media. It looks like they have several contract disputes and even department of labor/tax issues. I searched for the owners (Christopher Jones and Michael Jones) but could not figure which ones they were as there are many listed.

Nothing is listed under their Megacolo company yet (ran by Mike and Chris).

Worst company ever! I hope they do go under. I was scammed by this company. I put in for this deal in January and it felt somewhat promising. After about 20 tickets and bad support, I still haven’t received my server or refund. It’s like already June and still nothing. No one answers emails/tickets/ or the phone. I’ve paid them for like 3 months for nothing. It’s not a big loss but knowing that I’m getting nothing out of it I hope this company dies!
