Community Roundup - April 2015

As the days are getting longer (or shorter) and the weather is getting better (or worse) and summer is coming (or winter) April has come to an end (both in the Northern and Southern hemisphere). Which mean’s it’s time for another Community Roundup!

As always, if you have something interesting to share for the Community Roundup, please send a PM to @CommunityRoundup at LowEndTalk!

We need your feedback!

As part of our ongoing effort to improve both LowEndBox and LowEndTalk I’ve launched to threads on LowEndTalk to gather feedback for either site. You can find those threads here for LowEndBox and here for LowEndTalk. Our goal is to gather genuine and useful feedback and do something with it, all taking into account sustainable pace while doing so. The first few good suggestions have been made, of which one I will immediately start executing: tagging hosts with IPv6. I realize this is a small one, but we have to start somewhere.

We appreciate everybody taking the time to give us some feedback, so thank you for that! We do ask that you keep it constructive and realistic (banning all online.net offers, for example, is neither constructive nor realistic).

I will be sharing some more feedback and what we intend to do with it in the next roundup!

LowEndSpirit-style KVM

Another interesting development last month when Inception Hosting’s Anthony Smith launched his LittleHappyCloud LES-style KVM service. You can get a NAT-IPv4 KVM machine with IPv6 from just €5.50/year! It seemed like before this would only be possible with OpenVZ, but just as Anthony initiated LowEndSpirit’s OpenVZ offering, he now launched similar offerings in the KVM market. Needless to say this is a very interesting development and Anthony is becoming kind of an explorer of the hosting market of the future this way.

Anthony, thank you for these things as I can say without a doubt that the community loves these offers!

systemd is taking over…?

With the launch of Debian 8.0 Jessie, systemd is now the default management and configuration platform on the two major Linux distributions for servers (with Ubuntu 15.04 following in those footsteps). The migration from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7 turned out to be pretty problematic, though it seems to be a bit of a smoother process with Debian. While this major change introduces many challenges, they’ll hopefully become more easy to solve over the coming months as people get used to them, software adapts to them, and solutions to problems will full up StackOverflow (and LowEndTalk).

We’re happy to hear your experiences with migrating to systemd and this new Debian distribution!

New hosts on LowEndBox

April again saw a number of new hosts appear on LowEndBox. Here’s the list for last month:

That’s it for this community update! Thank you again for reading!

  3. Alpharacks has been down since yesterday around 15:00 EST. They claim their DC is not responding. Support staff doesn’t seem to have any answers.

    • My server came back up after a 24 hour outage. My ticket went unanswered for 15 hours after the initial response. Not a good sign. This is my email server, so it looks like I’ll be shopping around.

Just my 2 cents but I guess BlueVM is coming to deadpool soon (unusable VPS on Texas node for more than 2 months)

Not to mention the tickets that get closed with no answer ^^

I liked your MariaDB tutorial a lot about a week ago. I hope you can write more tutorials. Thank you.

Some notes on commenting on LowEndBox:
