Fanatical VPS - $6/3 Months 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Germany

Fanatical VPS Nick from Fanatical VPS has emailed me their current birthday promotion. They have hit the 1 year mark (and 10 months since we last featured them), and they have updated all their plans + pricing. Moreover use coupon code oneyear to get 20% off recurring discount. Their low end package is now $6/quarter via this direct sign up link.

  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 5GB storage
  • 1Mbps unmetered bandwidth
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers in Nuremberg, Germany (Hetzner, test IP: de.speedtest.fanaticalvps.com). While it’s a nice VPS package, I guess people might be turned off by its relatively small pipe. I’ll rather get 200GB/month at 10Mbps, than 1Mbps unmetered (which would give you 330GB/month when you saturate the link). You should be able to get more info about the owner here.

BTW, as you supposed, I got this. Too much ram, and wanted to try some games :P but something sucks… I/O

          # dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k conv=fdatasync count=1K
          1024+0 records in
          1024+0 records out
          67108864 bytes (67 MB) copied, 9.8905 s, 6.8 MB/s

Sometimes it drops to 1MB/s. Anyway, maybe a ramdisk can do the job.

          In other details..

          model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
          cpu MHz : 2673.385

          4 cores. Insane n_n Take a look here http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/383663

About the network, the speed is in the 10MB/s (have not tried upload to the machine). Ping 200 ms from Mexico. And SolusVM says I have 150GB of traffic o_O

          For me is a 7/10 xD (i/o… I/OOOOOO!!!!!!)

        • A note on the IO load: I wasn’t actually expecting this offer to go live on the site so soon, nor expecting such great reception. As a result we’ve actually over-filled a node with all the new super-micro’s. I’m now in the process of contacting those of you who just bought them to see if you’d be willing to move over.

According to http://fanaticalvps.com/legal-network.php, “All VPS’s come with an unmetered, shared 100mbps connection.” And the 1 MBps is not a hard automatically enforced limit, but rather a soft guideline. So if this is true, you can kinda assume you have the 100 MBit port and about 300 GB of transfer, but then they may contact you if you try to burn all of it too fast.

Good to see TOS/AUP not forbid IRC: http://fanaticalvps.com/legal.php

Also, I wonder if IPv6 is available.

    March 21, 2011 @ 5:57 am | Reply
    • You can use the ‘fair usage’ as quickly as you like, note it’s .5 on the super-micro, although 300GB would generally be fine, we normally just contact people who are about 200% over the ‘fair usage’ and either ask them to upgrade or simply enforce the fair usage speed on them (.5 on the super-micro, 1,5,10 on the rest).

IPv6 should be coming sometime this week, I’ve got it all setup on the test node working. There are a few limitations caused by OpenVZ though.

This is my 2 month review of this plan and I gotta say, I’m really impressed! I haven’t had a network downtime AT ALL, no reboots at all, box uptime is 59 days. Speed has been very nice, I had some problems in the beginning with someone’s VPS on the box ‘bogging up the nic’ but it was fixed pretty fast.
    so, to give some numbers:
    network and hardware stability: 10/10
    network speed: 9/10
    price: 10/10

my only regret is that this offer has ended and I can’t get any new boxes.

I am on the same node, and everything is just perfect.
Fast disk I/O and download speeds, it never hangs.
And the sites I tried to host there are super fast.
        Will continue with them 100%.

    • We do the best we can :) Most of the ‘older’ nodes are very much stable, it’s always the newer nodes which suffer unfortunately; the occasional customer who beleives a VPS is on par or more powerful than a full server.

I got an email a few days ago saying my VPS would be down for 45-60 mins do them upgrading to Gb Ethernet. My server has been down for 6hr’s now and I have gotten NO response to my support ticket or email’s.

First, no upgrade should cause a VPS to go off-line. FanaticalVPS should have all the servers hosted on Linux KVM/Proxmux/libVirt so my VPS would simply be live migrated over to a different server.

FanaticalVPS is NOT production quality. You should never host anything on FanaticalVPS. They do not have their infrastructure setup properly, so they can not back up any service up-time claims they may have. 6hr’s down is not 99% up-time by any stretch of the imagination. Only use FanaticalVPS for Test/Demo servers.

I am extremely dissatisfied with the service and would never recommend them to anyone.

    • We’re a small company providing low-priced VPS, you really can’t expect us to have the infrastructure you are talking of, we aren’t big enough. We do our best to get you 100% uptime, and we regularly do on most nodes, however sometimes things do break.
