LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

fileMEDIA - €21/Year or €3.49/Month 256MB KVM in Frankfurt, Germany

Johannes, from fileMEDIA, has sent in another offer for LowEndBox readers. If you use the coupon code LET-YEARLY-2013, it will give you 50% lifetime discount on annual, biannual and triannual orders.

PowerBox Micro

  • 256MB RAM
  • 1 vCPU Core
  • 15GB Raid 10 Diskspace
  • 1TB Bandwidth
  • 1Gbit Port Speed
  • 1 IPv4 Address
  • 2 IPv6 Addresses
  • KVM/SolusVM
  • €21/Year | Order Link

fileMEDIA have been featured on LowEndBox once before, when they were offering this plan on a monthly basis. They’re also fairly active on LowEndTalk. At the moment they’re running a competition on there, in which you can win yourself a free vps for the year. Their nodes are using the E3-1270v2 CPU, 32GB of RAM and 12 to 24 hard drives in hardware RAID10. We actually reviewed fileMEDIA several months ago. If you’re a customer, we would like to hear how your service is going.

fileMEDIA accept payments via PayPal, Credit Card or Bank Transfer. Refunds are available only before your vps has been created. They can offer 7 day trials if you get in touch. Additional IPv4 can be purchased at €1.49 each per month but additional IPv6 addresses can be added for free. As their terms are in German, I have read over them and it appears that Tor, Proxies, IRC servers and bouncers as well as Distributed Computing (SETI client, Einstein @ Home etc) are prohibited. If you can speak german, or use a translator which allows , you may want to view their Terms of Service before signing up.

    Well I have a preliminary rapport on this service. But I’m not a customer. You know.. in order to become a customer one first has to sign up and in order to sign up one needs to be able to access their website. However that website is down (at least) since 16:55 (GMT+1 DST).

    Out of sheer frustration I’ve even tried 2 different routers, 3 computers (running w2k, xp and vista), using firefox 3.x up to and including firefox 21, clearing browser-cache/cookies, disabling virus-scan/firewall, restarting, you name it, I’ve tried it.
    Not that I have any other problems with my computers/browsers/websites I visit…

    Then, why try so much when I know nothing is wrong at my end (I visited filemedia.de a couple of times this week and combined with this offer and the general line of reviews this was my first choice (to pop my vps-cherry))?
    Well I already wanted to sign-up earlier this week, but was required to enter a valid domain-name to sign-up. So I wanted to ask why via their chat-feature on their website (since quite some competitors don’t require a domain-name up-front and/or provide an internal dns-name). But the chat-feature didn’t work. When I eventually mailed them that I couldn’t use the chat and had a question, I was told: ‘then something blocking the javascript.’

    Since javascript is kinda my forte (and every javascript-driven feature worked on the site except the chat), I was naturally curious to have a look at my browsers error-log and inspect the code.
    I found 2 severe bugs that I documented and explained per mail together with my FQDN-requirement question.

    For example on https://www.filemedia.de/manager/cart.php?gid=12 (line 60):

    (function(d, t)var g = d.createElement(t), s = d.getElementsByTagName(t)[0];
    g.src = "https://js.gleam.io/AKeoQ/ol.js"; s.parentNode.insertBefore(g, s);
    }(document, "script"));

    This will never ever work and will throw an error (as it should) (note missing openings curly brace and missing nested function content). (side-note: I think these pieces of javascript are generated by php). However I’m told: ‘scripts snipptes are provided from comercial scripts and works fine here, we don´t have any problems with that.’

    Ok, all of that is still no biggie.. I just have bad luck trying to sign-up at a moment the server is having problems…

    Well, that brings us back to today. After over 3.5 hours trying to open filemedia.de and only seeing error: ‘the website takes to long to respond’ I finally gave up. (Thankfully #lowendbox on IRC is a cool gang, that helped pass the time.)

    Now how to give that company a heads-up of what is going on?
    If it wasn’t for the mail-address that I had in my mailbox (due to pre-sale question earlier this week), I couldn’t even get their contact-information (like their emergency mail-address/phone…).

    So, I’ve sent them a mail 20:42 outlining and describing the problem (as I have done in this post).

    Fine, action is taken, confidence is restored you say?

    Not quite,
    at 0:51 that mail bounces back: Delivery Status Notification Delayed for support@filemedia.de

    So that mail isn’t going to arrive either and it is unknown when it will arrive.
    It is now 3:00, filemedia.de is still down since (at least) 16:55 (that is 10 hours) and there is NO WAY of informing them, since their mail is also down and I don’t have any other contact-data (something I would normally find on a supplier’s website but… that sends this story into an infinite loop..)

    THIS is also the reason I’m posting this here: there seems no alternative.
    And I want to add: I always envisioned my first written words about vps to be (a lot) more positive (and actually showcasing a step-by-step from zero to a working vps inc. screenshots; instead of outlining how a 4-speed cdrom, some bare metal and 10 hours compare to a ‘quick and hassle-free’ vps).

    Hoping for a quick response none the less.

      quick update: its 12:35 (GMT+1 DST). My mail to filemedia.de finally bounced at 4:52 since their server doesn’t respond. Their website is still down, there is absolutely no single way to contact them.

      I’m talking business with Johannes Ernst at this moment. The trouble and explanation is that they changed IP yesterday and my ISP’s dns cached the old ip (the same dns their mail system used).

      You can hold/remove this post and my 2 updates.

      • Yes was a problem with the isp cache. We didn´t get any email in this time.
        Sorry for that problem!

    I can recommend this provider. The VPS itself runs like a charm, had to real issues yet. As far as I know this is also one of the cheapest KVM offers on the market, at least for Frankfurt datacenters.

    The performance on my server seems a bit lower than neqste posted. But in a real life usage (moderate DNS, Mail and Web) I did not notice any bottlenecks.

      And concerning the support, I had a few ticket with them (before and after purchase). All were answered within a few hours and their responses where always friendly and they knew what they are talking about. Will see what the future brings, but looks like this is a nice place to settle down your servers. ;) They offer different kinds of servers on their website, also some located in US.

    Got one, it’s quite rare to find such a low price in Europe. It seems to work fine, I didn’t contact their support, so I can say nothing about it. I hope to be able to keep my website there for a long time.
