LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

FragHost - $36/Year 512MB OpenVZ VPS

FragHost Via this WHT offer. FragHost is a gaming community that provides hosting service, and their current “Holiday Special” are selling OpenVZ VPS for $3/month with $10 setup fee, or $36/year. You get

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • 2 IP addresses
  • OpenVZ/vePortal

Servers available in either Scranton PA, or Los Angeles CA. Yes, exactly the same as BurstNet plans which are also now available in Scranton or LA. However, FragHost do manage to sell them cheaper than BurstNet… Not quite. I think this is way below cost for the reseller.

$3/month sounds cheap but you do need to factor in the setup fee. So the payment for the first month would be $13. People would probably just pay for $36 thinking they can get 12 months out. Let’s see whether they can stick around for long. Their home page, although decorated with fancy graphics, has many broken links. The domain has been registered since June this year. Many gaming-affiliated “hosting providers” are usually kids or college students renting out part of the servers to subsidize their game servers. Hopefully it is not the case here.

Huge amount of broken links. The site has a nice design for a gaming community. Had checked it few weeks back, was annoyed with broken links everywhere but nothing seems to have changed. Anyone tried them?

  2. Decent deal… though they chose a well known theme/template to make their site and apparently didn’t build out any of the links other than the services page.
i.e. THERE IS NO TOS or PRIVACY POLICY…..

Btw, at least he’s got one box hosted on a colo at Continuum Data centers out in Chicago – http://www.continuumdatacenters.com

Here’s the owner actually talking about it just last month… though he refers to the server he has there as an off-site/backup client control panel and game center.
He also seems like a somewhat active member of WHT though his experience seems to be primarily in gaming servers… don’t know the guy nor need the box but compared to a LOT of the folks hosting decent/cheap yearly prices, this one at least seems like he’s not only in the ‘scene’ but can at least keep a few gaming boxes up and running…. which is a lot more than i can say about a few owners of services that come and go through wht/lbox…. if someone gets this let’s see a review! :)

I love these guys that put LLC in their company name when it appears they really arent
an actual LLC. Checked the LLC database for Indiana where it appears he is located and
    no entries for Fraghost.

I’ve seen this offer at wht already. Thats, a very decent price. But risky to pay for one year in advance. And the monthly deal with 10$ setup fee, which is over 3 montly fees, is way to expensive. In case this will really be a stable offer for x months:

    awk ‘{if ( NR == 1) { for (i=1;i<=12;i++) { printf "%d:\t%.2f\n", i, (10+3*i)/i; }}}' /bin/sh
    1: 13.00
    2: 8.00
    3: 6.33
    4: 5.50
    5: 5.00
    6: 4.67
    7: 4.43
    8: 4.25
    9: 4.11
    10: 4.00
    11: 3.91
    12: 3.83

    I will pass this time.

    • I think the point is, since these guys are resellers, the service would be worthwhile if it is actually cheaper than BurstNet themselves. BurstNet retails those plans at $5.95 so it would be cheaper if you use more than 4 months.

At the same they will be “below cost” soon afterwards. So let’s see whether they’ll be around for that long.

But Burst only do Burstable Ram on their premium VPSs? which are more expensive.

Well since they specialize in gaming, will they setup a game or two if I purchase this plan? Sorry to be asking this here but their live support says “ON” but the link is broken. Anyone with previous experience on this?

Source Games really. Maybe you could run around 100 slots on a server of this spec. Source Games work better in OpenVZ then Xen.

@ Benny. This config is more than enough to handle one decent and maybe full (sa-mp.com)SA-MP server. I ordered one yesterday, for learning purposes. I have to wait until my echeck has been cleared(3 working days)

    • I run a L4D2(left for dead two) dedicated server for a group of friends because two are from outta the country and well, we were sick of them using the ‘my ping is low’ as the excuse.. its just debian openvz running offa around 768megs of ram.. located in a newark datacenter – server IO only skips up when the game is transitioning from campaigns (which takes all of 10-20 seconds tops)…can run a game with 15 users without the ram going over 500 megs… simple setup and i know i could knock that down even lower (there are guides all over the steam message boards), i’ve just been too lazy.. btw, installing any steam server is so easy its almost a joke as far as two commands and boom.. installed + running…

  11. I just spoke to them over the phone and they mentioned that they are getting a new template for the site so that should fix the broken links.

    December 29, 2010 @ 8:05 pm | Reply
    • How does that fix the broken links?

The reason there is broken links is because they didn’t complete their site.

  12. @Souvlaki, It is not “more then enough” to run a SA-MP server full of players ;)

I have had to buy core i7’s in the past to handle a SA-MP server full due to CPU usage.

So don’t just assume things based on…. SA-MP usage with 10 players.

Of course it is, with a simple, fully optimized script. But sorry my bad, I didn’t mean 500 players but 100.

  13. We are working on our site still. Sorry about the broken links. We have a few servers in Continuum.

Our VPS Special is limited availability. We eat the cost. People in business know this as ‘loss leader’.

Also, get your information correct about our registered LLC. Check the state of Indiana’s register site to verify my company here: https://secure.in.gov/sos/online_corps/view_details.aspx?guid=D7515B38-83B9-40E5-A4FB-F5BA0E35EE37

Admin needs to correct false information.

Thanks guys. This special generated a lot of revenue in other services.

  14. Steve – you’ve run other servers from what i’ve seen as far as previous posts re: gaming setups, don’t ever put up any website, especially one involving hosting anything, without at least making sure the most 4 important links in hosting work – the TOS, the buy now button, contact us/support info and a privacy policy. And in that order as far as importance.. lol

    good luck with the venture
