Corey is a Network Engineer by profession. He started Front Range Hostings in July 2011 which is a little over one year old. Not many reviews online although I was able to dig some benchmarks. Accepts Credit Cards and PayPal as payment method. They also offer free DNS Management via “Client Portal” (probably SolusVM DNS which in my opinion is a good choice)

Note that it appears they are NOT associated with (the very established) Front Range Internet Inc, also in Colorado, which has long provided high-end network, colo, and vm services.

This place is only a year old; why shouldn’t I be worried about business problems (like trademark conflict versus FRII?)

    • FRCorey:

Front Range is a generic term and could never be trademarked, there are way too many businesses using it.

LEB25 is reinstated on the 128MB Plans, we have resolved our IP cost issues going forward so get them while they’re hot!

Because every business in Colorado has Front Range as part of their name

    Front Range Cleaners
    Front Range Honda
    Front Range Toyota
    Front Range Plubming

    It’s generic..

AJ Yes you can get PPP/TUN/TAP

So how many IPv6’s do I get? Also, any BSD support?

    • FRCorey:

OpenVZ is Linux based, any BSD support will come with KVM.

Maybe it’s a dumb question, but how can a VPS be offered under $2?

Most dedicated server providers provide an additional IP and $1 per month and roughly the same goes for the SolusVM Panel.

For some providers IP costs are not an issue. Payment transaction costs on the other hand are an issue, but this could be mitigated by using a micro payments account.

Depends on who you know I guess. Most I’m paying for ip’s at any one location is 10 cents.

Many hosts commonly put their customer facing websites on other gear unless they’re very large. It helps to be able to contact customers if one of the networks the their servers reside on were to die. It also gives us freedom to modify our website without impacting others on that node, or the other way around.

  10. FRCorey:

We give 5 IPv6 IP’s and 1 IPv4 IP. As for BSD Support we have KVM node we are working on and that would be able to support BSD ISO installs at the start, hopefully template installs with the next update of SolusVM.

Well quick set-up. But I asked for Debian and get Centos. Given an IPv6 address, but good not access via IPv6 (although I not tested extensively).

Got Debian on re-install, but had to use control panel to re-assert root password.

I’ve been talking to other hosts that have SolusVM and WHMCS and they too have random issues with the default OS being installed. I’m debating on just putting instructions in the welcome email to login and do the initial install which takes all of 30 seconds to do until SolusVM fixes the problem.

I’m not sure if I understand your comment on the IPv6. You should be able to access your VPS via IPv6 if you want, just be aware that if you connect to your VPS via a domain name many terminal clients will either choose IPv4 first or try the connection of the first returned result from the DNS query which in many cases may be IPv4.

I wont oversell nodes, I do have a plan to implement SSD caching on our existing servers to increase IO availability, and have a new server in the works that will have CacheCade installed as our first KVM node.

        • As it already stands, I don’t think they are oversold. My speeds and IO has not changed since my server setup. Good performance through out.

IPv4 is the current standard for IP addressing but there’s only spport for 4.2 billion ip addresses. There’s 8 billion people in the world, and countless more servers and ip enabled cell phones , laptops, tablets etc.

IPv6 has address space at 2^128 vs 2^32 for IPv4, which means basically you could give a billion ip’s to every person every day and the sun would burn out before we ran out.

Many ISP’s are rolling out IPv6 to their customers this year so making sure your website is IPv6 ready is important.

  20. Hello there,

I have a question and maybe you can answer here. Do you have anything against OpenVPN running on your VPS services? I could not find anything specific regarding this in your ToS.

    Thanks!

    September 1, 2012 @ 9:51 pm | Reply
    • FRCorey:

No I have a bunch of OpenVPN customers as long as the VPN is not being used to commit the offenses listed in the TOS/AUP you’re fine.

I added a few, but will be the last for a month or so. Once we have our ARIN assignments settled we will be able to offer these again. However we have to turn off LEB25 for the 128 plan or we lose money per user. So it’s 2 dollars instead of 1.50, but if you pay yearly you would still get 10% off. I know it’s not ideal, but the datacenter we offered this at changed their ip prices from free to a dollar an ip after what I feel they decided I was too successful. I burned through two IP subnets in a week :)

      • FRCorey:

It will be back in a month or two though with the discount I just need to get my ARIN assignments which drops the prices a good deal.
