GigeVPS - $4.46 384MB OpenVZ VPS in UK

Updated June 2011 — GigeVPS, after being acquired by ThrustVPS in March, is now redirecting to Thrust’s main site. Company in dead pool.

GigeVPS Rus from GigeVPS tipped me about the launch of their new UK nodes. Use promo code UKLAUNCH to get 25% off recurring discount. GigeVPS offers the same price for both US and UK nodes. So for $4.46/month you can get their “Bronze” package with the following spec (UK signup link).

  • 384MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 200GB/month data transfer on 1Gbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Since GigeVPS has been bought by NetIntelligence earlier this month, whom also owns Thrust::VPS and RapidSwitch — which is probably where these VPS will be housed. Too bad the 30% off exclusive offer discount from 2 weeks ago has already disappeared.

On an off-topic note, I have been since for the last couple of days (bad bad virus) and will probably be operating in degraded mode for the next couple of days. So don’t expect intelligent posts. And don’t worry if you are a provider who have emailed me to be featured — they will come. Just will be a bit late.

This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I don’t use much BW each month, but I need the ability to burst to more than 100mbit on occasion. The box being in the UK is the icing on the cake.

I was a customer of Rus’s a few years ago, for a dedicated server. I realised I was paying out the equivalent of $80 a month and hardly using the box, so decided to make the leap to VPS. Best decision I ever made, purely for financial reasons. These days I have several VPS and all together they don’t come to half of that.

I was happy with Rus’s services, so hopefully I’ll be as happy with his VPS offerings. I’ll keep you guys informed on how it goes!

I actually went for the next package up, which is slightly over the threshold for being a low-end box at $7.46 but the extra ram and transfer might be useful for me.

So far: Instant setup, decent range of OSes, reimaging was super fast.

    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz

Running unixbench right now, then wget tests afterwards. It feels very quick though.

Were you able to set up NS easily?
I think I did something wrong. I installed Cent OS Hostingabox and created my domain on klaxo. I then added the 1 ip for ns1 and ns2 and then changed my name servers to ns1.mysite.com ns2.mysite.com all in godaddy. its 3 days later and I think I need something wrong on the vps side as it hasnt resolved

@Beny – I pasted a massive list of wgets earlier.

If you’re asking about speed FROM the VPS, here are some tests.

    18.1MB/sec to OVH
2.2MB/sec to home (more or less maxing me out)
    7MB/sec to Sweden

    It’s generally very fast. I’m impressed :)

No idea on those Beny. TUN doesn’t appear to be enabled, but whether they’ll enable it on request is another thing. There doesn’t appear to be a mention of torrent/p2p/peer in their T&C, so I’d assume it’s allowed.

In the VPS, there is none, on one page of the control panel it has 512MB (i went for the 512MB guaranteed one) and on another it has none.
