HostGD - $4.95 128MB OpenVZ VPS

HostGD Via this WHT Offer. HostGD, an UK based company that has only registered their domain back in Feb 19 this year, has advertised some very cheap OpenVZ based VPS. For $4.95 per month you can get their Virtual Tier 1 package with:

  • 128MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 5GB storage
  • 25GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/HyperVM
  • Various Linux distributions to choose from.

Although their website seems to be hosted in Norway, in their network page they say that they are using BurstNET in Scranton PA. The website has copy right notice saying “2005-2009”, but the domain has only been registered a few weeks ago — guess which one should we believe in? The company might still be tinkering with their plans. Having 1:4 guaranteed:burstable memory ratio is probably asking for trouble, and Tier 5 has less monthly data transfer than Tier 4? Buyers beware.

  1. Although we don’t highly apreciate the “Buyers Beware” everyone is entitled to their Opinion of the company, HostGD was formed in 2005, By a chinese firm which allowed the domain to expire in 2008, We although being the ones that registered the domain name are now the owners of the previously chinese Service Provider. We started out planning to serv from Norway, Thus the current location of the company, We will be moving the website into BurstNet’s services over the course of the next week.

Also the planning behind the VPS Tier’s is blaitent if you couldnt see yourself, We offer plans to suit any need, Where is the rule that they need to be ordered by bandwidth? price? disk space? I don’t know of any of these rules.

We can only vouch that everyone believes whatever they want, However our service will beat that of any leading provider and we guarantee it.

  2. Hmm. Great. Instead of stating it’s an oversight to have amount of transfer in Tier 5 less than Tier 4, you just say that you don’t follow nor know the rules of laying out progressive hosting plans…

Well. All the best to your business.

  3. Well i didnt post a response to recieve such an abusive one, It’s no oversight, if you compare the Tier 4 and Tier 5 Plans you will notice the Ram is doubled in size on Tier 5, This simply shows the “Progressive” term, if you like you could make Sub layouts of the VPS Plans at Host GD

    Very Low End: (128mb RAM)
    Tier 1 and Tier 2
    Mid End: (256mb RAM)
    Tier 3 and Tier 4
    Higher End: (512mb + RAM)
    Tier 5 Onwards

Tier 5 is the same price as Tier 4, It’s a compromise which is optional to the end user to chose if they want more Ram/Less Space/Bandwidth or Less Ram, More Space/Bandwidth, if they want both then there’s the options of the Elite Packages.

Infact if i were to buy “Shared” hosting or something similar i would expect to see progressive layouts, However with VPS the Factors and Availabilities are alot different, RAM being the first thing many people look at when buying a VPS. Therfore our plans are as progressive as any other.

Thankyou for showing such concern and a polite friendly attitude.

As previously stated, We offer a 7 Day money back guarantee so we’re prepared to offer anybody a package for 7 days, If your not completely happy you get your money back.

  4. andy:

The hostgd admin seems childish (not to mention asinine) in his response. I wonder if he even completed his high-school studies yet

  6. HostGD seems pretty good, I’ve been hosting with them for around two weeks now. No downtime at all, and a reasonable price too. Site was suspended for a bit due to the MPAA, but that was on my part ;)

  7. Beware of HostGD, I have just had a very bad experience with them.

At first they were great, but then my server started to suffer with serious downtime. the first instance was 10 hours. Then I suffered repeated Downtime. I asked the host what the problem was and was basically palmed off with answers that were not satisfactory, The more my problems persisted the more they began to ignore my Emails, Support Tickets, Phone Calls and MSN messages.

I eventually moved my Main site after 3 weeks of problems which to my disbelief was DDOSED last night 3 days after moving it to another host. My site has never been attacked before and 2 other sites I had hosted there are still offline.

I tried to find out more about my Host so I done a WhoIs on there Domain, now the address that is listed does not actually exist as I checked on Google Street Level Mapping. The last address on that road is Twickenham Rugby Ground.

I would advise any future would be customers to be very carefull were HostGD are concerned.
