HostLadder - $6.49 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Kansas City

Updated May 2011: Looks like HostLadder is no longer providing VPS. It has been sold, the previous owner moved on to EdgeVPS, and the site re-developed for game hosting.

HostLadder Unknown individual from HostLadder contact me about their 50c off promotion on their low end VPS (as seen on this WHT post). Use promo code 50CENTSOFFVPS to bring down the cost to $6.49/month for the following VPS (direct sign up link).

  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 100GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Servers in Kansas City MO. Likely with Joe’s or maybe Wholesale Internet. Domain has only been registered since December 2010, so pretty new operation and has already changed the decision of their website at least once. Both NS appear to be on the same host. Moreover, WHOIS protection prevents people from knowing who they are dealing with. Finally — Minecraft servers?!! I guess they are serving some niche demographics and might not be suitable to run your business website and apps.

The CEO is called Travis. They also rent some of my software :)

    • Any particular reason that they chose to hide the WHOIS info?

      • I will be opening it up soon, but lately due to spammers ect. I am working on crunching down on spammers and getting me off of all of the domain mailing lists. I get a letter every couple of weeks about using a different company for my domains. :(

It’s an interesting niche demographic but I doubt you can run a minecraft server on less than 1GB at the bare minimum. I’d recommend at least 2GB RAM.

      Minecraft runs on 512MB.

Not from the servers I have seen. I’m sure you can force it in there with swap, but it’s gonna be slow. For perspective, one of my friends private servers currently uses over 1GB of RAM.

512MB can easily hold 10 players.

Almost every minecraft host specifies 512MB to hold around 1-6 players. Mineserver written in c++(only windows at the moment) can apparently handle 20+ players on a 512MB server.

I actually tried the other c++ server MCserver on a 128MB openvz the other day and it actually worked sure with a lot of lag but the memory usage in the beginning was only 80MB total with os so it didn’t seem memory was the bottleneck.

    • They run fine so far on the 512 base limit, we have had 10 players in our 512’s before, but we do suggest doing 6 as the max but they do work with 10.

        • We really did not change our idea of our website, we still have all of the same plans, we just changed the design, and then we also made a custom template, instead of a paid, and lowered all of the prices and added more minecraft options as we sell a TON Of them.

Thanks for the questions though :)

  4. Actually,

these are the suggested memory needed for slots:

    512MB Recommend for 6 Slots
    1GB Recommend for 15 Slots
    1.5GB Recommend for 20 Slots
    2GB Recommend for 30 Slots
    3GB Recommend for 50 Slots
    4GB Recommend for 65 Slots
    5GB Recommend for 80 Slots

There is no recommended RAM for slots. You have to take into account what CPU the server has, what plugins and mods are installed.

    • I know people running 4-6 slots on 128MB ram and they’re absolutely stable. Why is it you suggest 512mb?

Seriously? I assume you are talking about using third party server software like mineserver or mcserver then. But I still don’t see how you could do it. Mineserver is windows only and can you really have a windows install with low enough memory consumption? I tried MCServer on a server a couple of days ago and while it started out at 80MB it grow bigger fast when I started exploring the world passing 128MB after a while. Maybe there is a memory constraint in the software that I have missed.

Mineserver should technically run on Linux as its built with C++

Well yeah but it’s not released or precompiled for linux. But since it’s open source I guess some one could compile it them self.

    • You can also mono it to get it to work.

I thought everyone’s saying it’s C++? Unless it’s one of the 3 programs in the world to have actually used C++/CLI, I suspect you’re confusing/mistyping mono and wine. Though why you’d use wine if recompiling is an option, I can’t imagine.

I’m not really sure what program everyone’s talking about, I’ve lost track of Minecraft’s official releases the last 2 months, with no hope of tracking the vast community right now. But if it’s the top result for “mineserver” on google, it looks like it already is precompiled for Linux, and mentions Linux, OS X, and FreeBSD specifically as supported platforms. Either way, pretty cool to hear about 3rd party servers coming up, should make for a very varied ecosystem. Minecraft is like the MUSH/MOO of the future.
