HostMist - $7 512MB Xen VPS in Germany Exclusive Offer

HostMist Richard from HostMist has emailed me an exclusive offer for the LowEndBox readers, on their new Germany based Xen VPS plans. Use promo code LEBSLICEPRICE to get 50% off discount for two months (i.e. not recurring). Their standard pricing is already pretty good, which we posted 3 months ago. “Monsoon” for $7/month (direct order link), and it comes with

  • 512MB memory
  • 25GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • Xen/SolusVM

Servers in Falkenstein, Germany so I guess it would be Hetzner. HostMist was founded in September 2008. The 50% off for 2 months discount is available to new customers only and expire in 2 weeks.

is there any info about SWAP space? 512MB, but what the SWAP space if it is XEN?

    January 24, 2011 @ 2:14 pm | Reply
    • I think with SolusVM it’s usually 2x the physical memory. Although with Xen you can pretty much just create a swap file and then bang! More swap space!

      (Not recommended though)

    Dear Kasper,

This entirely depends on the plans we sell. We place an average of 30 XEN VPS on each node. Even 2 VPS can utilize 100% of the port as we do not limit it but if we do see customers impacting others by utilizing over 80% of the port constantly we will limit that customer.

It was fun while it lasted: I can confirm that they are out.

I was provisioned one @ 36hrs ago. It was snappy. The provisioning was almost instantaneous, but of course you have to wait for it to boot.

I updated it and was locking it down when I had to go to work, so I shut it down. Came home 8 hours later, and it wouldn’t start. I figured they were doing maintenance. When I woke up in another 8 hours my vps was gone.

I did get a timely refund though.

    • Dear Pat,

We do apologize for that. We are unsure what happened but SolusVM started messing up during the provisioning and suddenly put customers on full nodes. If you do experience something like this, please contact us immediately so we can fix it. We fixed the problem which was causing it and we do hope that you don’t mind us turning down business overall. We are currently out of stock but if you would like to try us again when we have stock again, I would like to offer you one free month for the inconvenience.

  26. Dear Jim,

We do have an native IPv6 connection to the nodes but the XEN domU cannot use it currently. The network we use is routed and the XEN PV currently does not support proxy ndp which would enable us to offer IPv6 to customers.

In short, no but we are working on it.

  27. //Does ballooning equal overselling?//

About ten minutes ago I received the following reboot notification from Hostmist. A node reboot from time to time is ok to me if there’s satisfactory explanation as to why it has to be done.

Does the following explation make sense to you? It doesn’t to me, but I’d be happy to be mistaken —

“Xen recently introduced an balloon driver which basically balloons out if an VPS needs to be started to gather resources. The fact is that they wanted to improve performance on boot with this and ended up making performance worse as VPS start locking up or it freezes the VPS while it’s running. There was an patch available, which we applied earlier and now they finally released an new kernel build which we will apply tonight to finally get this problem out of the world. In order to apply the new kernel we will need to reboot the node again. As much as we hate to reboot the node, it’s definitely necessary to get this new kernel working in order to proceed with normal operations.

The reboot will be happening tonight at 6 pm EST (GMT-5) and should only take 5 minutes. We cannot guarantee that this will fix everything but we are confident enough to say that there is nothing worse then the current kernel. A few other nodes have been migrated to this kernel and we did not have any problems yet.”

      http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/how-to-tell-your-xen-vps-is-overselling-memory/

It depends, if it’s being used to give you above your promised amount (they suggest it’s to allow your VPS extra memory during startup), then it’s not overselling, it’s underselling.

But if ‘free’ only reports your promised amount as the total available, then possibly. If it only shows the standard total and also reports more in use than your processes are actually using, then it sounds more likely still.

Either way, a fix for the driver sounds like a good thing.

      February 4, 2011 @ 8:29 pm | Reply
  28. I apologize for the delay, we have been caught up with fixing the problem above. This is how the balloon driver works:

Usually the Dom0 (hostnode) gets all the memory allocated and then dynamically allocates the memory to DomU as needed. We limited this behavior by setting dom0_mem in the grub configuration file which basically gives the Dom0 an fixed amount of RAM and the rest is free to be allocated to the DomU. Now the balloon driver also allocates extra memory on our nodes while the DomU is booting. So whenever you boot an DomU that DomU temporarily get’s additional memory to boot without any trouble or complications. The problem we were having is that the memory which got allocated to the DomU while booting didn’t get freed again afterwards. So the DomU still had more RAM then allocated and didn’t give it back to the Dom0 to be allocated to other VPS who needed it. So if we still have around 3GB of RAM free, it won’t take long until that is used up by people rebooting their VPS. I think you guys know where Im going so no need to explain further.

If you know SolusVM then you would know that SolusVM doesn’t allow overselling on xen. In fact we even leave up to 3 GB of RAM unallocated for people wanting to upgrade so that they don’t need to be moved to another node.

    • Those outages are related to the balloon driver / kernel upgrade to fix that. There won’t be any needs for a reboot for a long while.

Alright here’s my review of HostMist’s service:

Although I was a total n00b with linux (the only command I actually new was su :D) I bought and started setting up my VPS. At first I tried a lot of Linxu distributions, until finally I managed to setup my VPS with nginx (instead of the tons of memory eating apache), php+fastcgi, mysql and vsftpd and now I’m having successfully setuped and working wordpress blog on CentOs 5 x64. Now the only problem that I had to contact the support was that once after I tried to reinstall my Centos 5 x86 (while they still offered it) something went wrong and the installation process failed. Richard was kind enough to fix the issue by telling me that there have been problems with x86 versions and I shouldn’t have had them as an option in the control panel. So he installed a x64 version and everytjing was fine (I didn’t want to touch anything, cause I was totally freaked out that I may have killed my vps :D). As a result I educated myself a lot about linux, vpses, memory problems, comamnds, hosting setup, etc. For 3.5$/month (I’m using XEN in Falkenstein) it’s more that a great offer! Thank you HostMist, thank you Richard, keep up the good work!

    So far, sounds great!

Future will tell if it’s oversold or not..

Anyway – if some day FreeBSD become available, will current customers be able to reinstall their system to FreeBSD?

    Thanks!

  42. Dear Joe,

Sure you can reinstall your OS at anytime. We expect additional OS to be available shortly but I can’t promise anything yet as we have to do all of this besides providing support and handling orders etc.

Building, Configuring and testing OS templates is pretty time extensive.

      Ok, great.

I’ll wait for your announce here to check that out though :)

      Thanks!

  43. We are almost out of stock again in Germany so if anybody still wants one of these grab one now. It will probably take 1-2 week(s) again until we get new servers.

And will the offer still be available in a couple of weeks?

Anyway, any news regarding FreeBSD support?

    Thanks!

In to my second month with these guys and I’m happily impressed, good (damn good @ this price) performance, haven’t need to open any tickets; 5 mins planned downtime for a needed kernel update which was advised well in advance.

    Keep it up!

  48. We do support FreeBSD now and you may also install any other exotic OS on selected Xen nodes.

When I try to sing up, no FreeBSD or other “exotic” OS are available to choose from. Is that how it’s supposed to be? (i.e. Can be installed later after getting the VPS?)

By the way, do you have the full list of OS you support?

      Thank you!

      WBR,

      m

        Dear WBR,

We did offer exotic OS but nobody was using them so we removed them again. We don’t like to maintain images which are not being used and we will not re-add them if only 1 or 2 customers are using them as the cost of the maintenance of these images are too high compared to the standard OS images.

Too bad then, would have been awesome to have one of my favourite OS running on a VPS :)

Still a very good offer though!

Thanks for the blazing fast answer :)

Oh, and it’s kind of funny that you think my name/nickname is WBR ;)

          No harm done/intended :)

Thanks again for clearing that OS question for me :)

I’ve been with Hostmist for months and have 6 VPSs with them.

All are brilliant, I hope they get more stock.

    • I guess you use them for your clients? Just can’t see why someone would buy large number of low end boxes from the same provider. But more power to you if you deploy low end boxes and make some income from it.

    • Dear Daniel,

We do have more stock available since yesterday. It’s really hard to keep up with all the orders but we are already working on a concept which will not make us run out of stock too soon.
