Good to know: I went to the order process myself and you will get a phone call to verify your order. I was called within 10 minutes. They verify your street address, e-mail address, and ask you whether it’s a server for private or business purposes.

LeaseWeb is an Amsterdam-based hosting company that has been operating since 1997. They’re part of the bigger OCOM Group, which also owns evoSwitch and several other companies. Their office is real (I drive past it quite frequently) and they’re quite a sizable operation at that. The storage with these machines is on a SAN and is on a RAID10 array. Transfer was increased heavily lately, with the cheapest server going from 500GB to 4TB! This change is permanent and not limited to this promotion. If you get a server for a longer period you also get discount, which stacks up meaning you can get these servers even cheaper if you pay for a longer term. As always, we’re very interested to hear how you guys experience this offers, so feel free to comment!

Host nodes have redundant power and multiple uplinks. They also have dual CPUs and supposedly plenty of RAM. A combination of SAS and SSD drives is used on the SAN for optimal performance. You can pay using PayPal, Bank transfer, or Credit Card. There’s a plethora of options available with each server, but they will make this more expensive. As always, please read their legal documents before you order!

I’ve ordered one of their servers. In the last section they have terms and conditions. I’ve scrolled through these and there were rules about IRC bots, but I can’t remember what these were exactly because I’m not planning to use the server for these.

Have never been impressed with leaseweb for a few reasons:

    1. The control panel had a nice design, but navigation was over complicated. I would honestly say I would rather use a VM from a Solus setup, as the information I would want to know is displayed in a more intuitive manner, and the actions I want to accomplish are easier to identify in Solus. I would figure that a company as large as leaseweb would have a better UI.

    2. Customer service – this is where I found them to be a pain. I contacted them to cancel a virtual instance that I had for about a year, but wasn’t using much for a project. I received notice that I would need to pay the next months service since I didn’t cancel in the correct time frame. I just let them know it’s kind of silly policy, and that it leaves a bad taste in my mouth; before this time, I didn’t have a negative opinion on leaseweb, but the nonsense they threw at me in the end, was not necessary. They finally said “nevermind, it’s our policy, but we will waive it this time” – I really don’t understand why they wanna piss someone off who is cancelling. If I was leaseweb, I would say “ok, no problem with cancelling – your next cycle hasn’t started, so you don’t owe us anything and your service will terminate when your account expires on x/y/z…have a good day!”

They offered me discounted products and a few other items, but I just let me know that I think they have old school policies and I don’t want to do business with them. I let them know that I was happy with my service up until I tried to cancel and was notified about fee’s for next month, etc, and now I would rather avoid them. The service ran fine though, the server was quick, and the network had no issues and pretty good connectivity. PS – If you are leaseweb, please don’t contact me, I have already let you know how I feel about your policies.

    • hi Dave,

I am one of the software developers working at LeaseWeb, I would very much like to know how i can improve our UI because we did a lot of changes in the past year and i would like to know what you would like to see differently so we can make it better. Maybe i made some wrong choices in the UI design, but if you could give me some pointers, that would be great!

      Best regards,
      Stephen

I really like this offer and I have purchased a 1Gb plan but there is one issue with the service that I can’t get a straight answer to. I’ve emailed support twice about this.
The server you get comes with a default name based on your account number. You have no control over this and by default the hostname of the server is the same. It ends up something like XYXNL001
I loaded Debian 7 on it and it doesn’t matter what you do with /etc/hostname or host files when you reboot the server reverts back to the default name given to you on commissioning.
I find this quite frustrating. Why doesn’t the UI let you change the name of the server so that it persists permanently in the config files for that instance.
Leaseweb would be my provider of choice if it wasn’t for this irritation.

You need to change more than just /etc/hostname. Follow the directions on this page https://wiki.debian.org/HowTo/ChangeHostname (or run the “non-intrusive script” on that page. After rebooting check with ‘hostname’ and ‘hostname -f’ and it should reflect your changed host name.

After you change the hostname you can also set rDNS in the control panel by clicking on IP management for the server. (note: your new hostname won’t be shown in the control panel but you can always use the ‘reference’ field in the panel to keep track of the hostnames)

            @DomainBop
Yes I’ve edited all those files (exim and smtp not relevant as no mail).
The trouble is when you restart, the boot process overwrites the hostname file with the default machine name eg. XYXNL001 and then it inserts an extra line in the etc/hosts file above the one I’ve just edited again with the default machine name. As this gets read first, my changes aren’t loaded.
Can’t find anyway round this apart from a start-up script to set it back but I consider that a bit of a bodge.

I have lots of experience with them since my previous employer recommended them to its customers.
    Please find some facts below

Asian customers must pay a security fee, if you use a non Asian ip phone number and adress during ordering no security fee is charged.

Their us vps platform is indeed in manasses

They allow just about anything, as long as no abuse complaints are filed or your services are ddossed daily.

    About vps
    -Custom iso’s are not allowed/accepted
    -no additional ipv4 adresses ever!
    – mostly stable and reasonable performance
    – no backups snapshots or anything like that

    About support:
Results may vary but overal they are quite helpfull and pretty fast

Looking glass can be found on their noc leasewebnoc.com which also has news about maintenance and issues

    About dedi servers:
-Their dedicated servers are also pretty cheap for servers in eu
    – they often use old desktop hardrives. test your drives for bad sectors before configging your server, they do replace drives whitout complaining, check the replacement drives as well!
-pretty much all upgrades possible can be done not cheap thoug
    – they charge 2.5 euro per extra ip per month
    – only 16 ip s in total per server
    – if you plan to use your dedi for serious business get a better sla because fixing hardware problems can take up to 24 hours to solve with basic

Signed up, paid for six months to make it a couple cents cheaper a month, lol. Verification was pretty painless, and was setup within about two hours, I think.

Control panel’s nice. The “basic firewall” is basic (and IPv4-only), but does what it’s supposed to. They have their own local Debian mirror (and other OSes too, I assume) which makes installing/upgrading packages quite quick. All in all, looks like a pretty solid product from a pretty solid company.

There’s no snapshot/backup function, which is fine. Leaseweb evidently offer some sort of object-storage product, but pricing seems to be on request, so I’ll just stick backups at Scaleway or Runabove. It’s not like Leaseweb are stingy with the bandwidth…

Yes, this can piss off people. They should just get authorization for the CC charge and then go through the verification process, so you can decline the process and no charges have been made yet. It is not that they shipped you a bag of gold – if the CC is fake, they can terminate the service immediately. It appears that they first take your money and then ask “who are you?”

    July 24, 2015 @ 11:27 pm | Reply
  24. shobhit verma:

@rosso you are correct. there could be other ways of verifying CC too. like the paypal does. put a charge and ask the exact amount charged.

I have cancelled my order with them. There is no reasons of proving “I am not a terrorist” when i have other ways to purchase hosting.

  28. I’m from Indonesia (asia) and the verification method is very easy, no need to put initial deposit or submit ID card.

@Angga chin: Yes, the latency from our country (ID) is high, I got about 400ms average from my US Leaseweb vps. But tbh, the speed of my site is loading faster, compared to VPS on LA I had before.

Recently ordered their 1 GB plan, 3 years term, applied coupon SAVE40, and billed under $75. Nice deal!

from indonesia here, registration process went ok and very quick, but with some minor glitch. after i submit order they suppose to call me, but could not reach my phone. I chat with them and verifications now with email. I send in my ID + proof of address, and 10 minutes later my vps is ready.

took the dual core vps and it is blazing fast and very cheap.
    highly recommend.

So opening your account in Leaseweb you’re risking full shutdown of all your services/business if you fail to respond within 30 MINUTES. That’s interesting that they won’t offer similar service.

30 mins? Over my dead body. I never use my servers to anything illegal but it’s very easy to fall victim to false accusation and lazy service provider employer.

BEWARE – in case of false accusation by your business rival, stalker or just ill-fated mistake you risk all your data, business, etc, if you fail to act within 30 MINUTES from their email:

OVER MY DEAD BODY. Worst policy EVER.

what is bad about this? If a customer steals your IP it might be nice that they can shut him down so that you can keep enjoying your service.
