LowEndBoxTV: Is a ServerFactory Ryzen VPS Faster Than a Hetzner Dedicated Server? You'll Be Surprised!

ServerFactory vs Hetzner

Is a high-end dedicated server faster than a high-end VPS? It depends but the numbers are a lot closer than you’d think!

In this new LowEndBoxTV video, I dig into a comparison between these systems:

  • ServerFactory NL-AMD Ryzen M with 8 cores (Ryzen 9 7950X), 16GB RAM, and 400GB RAID-1 NVMe
  • Hetzner AX41 dedicated server
  • Hetzner EX44 dedicated server
  • Hetzner AX102 dedicated server

I’ll be going over Geekbench 6 single/multi, random and sequential read/writes, compression, and typical operations like video transcoding and compilation.

Some things I found:

  • GB 6 single core on the Ryzen VPS is close to the AX102 and leads other dedis I tested
  • GB 6 multi is not as close but still very competitive
  • For random read/writes, the VPS isn’t as good, which is not surprising since it’s competing with other systems
  • Sequential speed, however, is awesome due to the provider likely using RAID 10
  • ZSTD decompression is faster, and compression is competitive
  • Redis performance is very good, beyond what you are likely to ever need
  • AV1 encoding performance is good, but you may be throttled by the provider if you’re encoding for long periods
  • For an Apache source compile, a dedicated server is only one second faster

There’s a lot more info I have to share and I think you’ll enjoy the video.
