Mean Servers was founded in May of 2014. They are a registered company in Great State of Colorado and their WHOIS information is public. They own all their equipment and their office is at the same building as the data center. They also have their own IP addresses directly from ARIN, and do not depend from allocation of their upstream. These are all positive indicators that they are into long term business operation.

We do not have information on exact host node build. But what we know is that they are using Intel Xeon Processors running at 2.93 GHz, 15k SAS drives in RAID 10, and are connected to a 10Gbps uplink. They take pride that they have amazing network and that their setup is supports both IPv4 and IPv6 natively, without using tunnels. David also told us that they NEVER oversell, and that they could easily upgrade resources of any plan within 15 minutes! We would appreciate if current customers will share their feedback at the comment section below.

PayPal, credit cards (through Stripe), and Bitcoins are payment methods available. They offer a 48 hour money back guarantee to all new clients. If a customer is not happy within 48 hours for any reason, refunds will be given minus the cost of any addons. (Note that it may take upto 7 days to process a refund, to ensure that TOS and AUP were not violated). Support via ticket is available 24/7, but phone and live chat are also in place during business hours (9AM to 5PM Denver time). They provide 99.99% SLA. As always, kindlyread their Terms of Service carefully before making any purchase.

    • We had a brief outage with our website due to a DDoS attack but we are back up now.

  2. Just FYI: We are currently moving data centers. Our new location is with Viawest (Wazee Street here in Denver) and not Handy Networks. All new services will be provisioned at the new data center. Those still at Handy Networks are being transitioned over to Viawest in the next month (an email was sent about a week ago regarding the move to current clients).

The looking glass for our Viawest data center is currently down (DDoS Attack) so the Handy Networks one is showing. In addition to more transit providers, Viawest has the same transit providers as Handy Networks so the network tests are similar.

    >If our server or network service is degraded for any reason due to a service originating from your account, Mean Servers Limited will charge you $150 per hour it takes to resolve the issue.

Sketchy as fuck, not to mention vague. Wouldn’t go near these guys with a 49-and-a-half foot pole.

    • You forgot the first part of that rule: “Services shall not be used in any manner that degrades or interferes with any other customers ability to fully enjoy their services.”. It sounds more like if your abusing their nodes (with the intent of bringing other peoples servers offline) they may bill you for $150, or, maybe they don’t bill people and that’s just there to keep the script kiddies away. They’re running KVM as well so it’s pretty hard to degrade or interfere with another “customers ability to fully enjoy their services”.

Very POOR Download speed. You want to see? They dont reply my last ticket, so i go here.. Last ticket waited for 7 hours.. If you dont increase the download speed of the VPS, then who will? I got slow lorris which was mitigated by cpanel two days ago. Checked the open keep alive connection and clean, nothing.. It means im out from the attack.. BUT..

This is the best speed 1Kbps: http://postimg.org/image/9ujckkk5l/

This is their download speed bench not even 1Mbps while my other VPS from different provider has more than 10Mbps
    Screenshot: http://postimg.org/image/rluyz0zk9/

And using IDM, also no difference: http://postimg.org/image/nqrkwggeh/

I started for 3 months with them, and after 1 month, i extended into 5 more months (so it’s 6 month).

Dont tell me it’s the slow loris, there is no slow loris anymore, it is your network now.. Maybe other customer also has the same experience.
Me, im going out of here but cant take any data, cant transfer, im stuck for 3 days now.. No willing to help. That’s all.. still trying to move my data..

    • It is important to note that we have worked tirelessly with this client to assist him with the problems he is facing, even as a client with unmanaged services. It’s true he has been under a slow lotus attack for the past several days but him claiming this is our fault is completely false. We do not offer DDoS protection, we do not claim to offer DDoS protection. If a DDoS attack is in progress, we nullroute if it is above a certain threshold. Since this attack never meets that threshold, he hasn’t been nullrouted but his services have been affected.

We gave him many suggestions regarding how to solve this (see https://www.meanservers.com/files/maxgusderesponse.png), all met with dissatisfaction. This is an unmanaged VPS and thus, we do not provide this kind of support. His questionable material he hosts attracts these attacks as viewable from the traffic reports provided. We receive DMCA notices everyday about the content he hosts but instead of kicking him off as most hosts would, we have decided to work with him (he doesn’t mention that anywhere). You can see his daily traffic report here: https://www.meanservers.com/files/gusdedaytraffic.png and weekly here: https://www.meanservers.com/files/gusdeweektraffic.png. You can clearly see when the slow lotus attacks have started/stopped and start up again. There is also a gap on the weekly VPS of no bandwidth because he allowed a partition to completely fill which he rebooted in an attempt to fix but made his services completely inaccessible. We then advised him how to fix this but he became combative when we told him this is an unmanaged VPS.

His claim that he contacted cPanel a few days ago are false, it was just yesterday (see here and note the date: https://www.meanservers.com/files/gusdecpanelticketr.png). The implementation cPanel had him do does not protect against slow lotus attacks in all instances, he is well aware of this. There is no problem with our network and he is the only client that is experiencing network problems that were brought on by his own doing. We have offered him advice, which is beyond what is offered with the unmanaged VPS but he refused to implement anything. In regards to his claim we are slow to respond, we have responded to him usually within 30 minutes (see the links above between cPanel and our recommendations). He continually bumps tickets that result in a delayed response as he drops to the bottom of the ticket queue or the tickets being marked as spam which is only checked once a day due to a large amount of bumps in a short time period. There isn’t much else we can do except show the facts.

It is unfortunate that this client claims otherwise but we have tried to advise him to the best of our ability on what to do, he just doesn’t want to implement anything to protect his own clients.

    • Do you have any proof you have had an account with us? Essentially only spammers are hit with any abuse fees.

I ordered a VPS from Mean servers when they were first featured on LEB as I was in need of a VPS to use as a proxy while studying abroad in Germany. Their service is absolutely the best. I almost always receive a reply within a hour or two, day or night, even on the weekends no matter what kind of question I might have. They even swapped my IP address for free when a certain VOD provider blocked one of their upstream provider’s subnets (they have since moved to their own IP range and which also work). No downtime as far as I can think of but I also do not monitor my VPS for up time. Anytime I have needed to access it, it was there so I assume there has been none and possibly at the most minimal.

For being located in Denver, my connection to here in Germany is still extremely good. I can usually download most files near the maximum speed my flat connection allows. Files downloaded to the server directly average 700 Mb/sec. My recent dd test resulted in the following:

    [root@jjpy ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=trash.bin bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
    16384+0 records in
    16384+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 1.41514 s, 759 MB/s

which is absolutely fantastic for a server running sata drives. Granted I was told this server is only at 20% capacity, I am still impressed as most providers average 300 MB/s max for non SSD drives even on an empty server. My proxy VPS dd test ran at 359 MB/s, still very good for sata drives.

My reason for this review is that I ordered another VPS from them after seeing this promotion as I needed a website to feature my design portfolio. The VPS was setup instantly, even paying with BitCoins as I had a few I needed to get rid of. I paid the extra $15 to have DirectAdmin installed by them since I am not familiar with DA; they were able to get it installed for me within 2 hours even though the normal provisioning period is 24. I just appreciate that they do not have a recurring charge for a decent control panel! When I inquired about a IPv6 netblock that was larger than the standard /96, they gave me a /64 for FREE which never happens in this industry. For $7, the 1gig plan is the best bang for your buck. I have been with many providers over the years but these guys take the cake.

For those ney-sayers about the “hidden” fees, there are none. It is called a terms of service agreement and every provider has one. You agree to it when ordering. No one puts a gun to your head and you should always read them. Mean servers has nothing out of the ordinary in there, only common things to keep abusers away. If you abuse a node, send spam, you should be charged extra as you effect other people’s services. The reason Mean servers does not have people abusing their nodes with coin miners, blocked ranges due to spam, or whatever is because they care about the services they provide. Any provider worth something should have a clause that will keep abusers at bay and I for one appreciate them keeping their services in tip-top shape!

In short, if you want a reliable KVM VPS provider, Mean servers is the way to go. No node abusers, fast speeds, just a fantastic service over all. If you plan on causing trouble, look else where as my services will appreciate it. Big thanks to you Mean servers for all the help! -J.H.
