OneDollarVPS - $3/Quarter 128MB OpenVZ VPS in UK

OneDollarVPS It’s pretty clear what you should expect from the name of the website — OneDollarVPS. Thanks to Barry from HostSign who emailed me about it 2 weeks ago, and Alex who announced it going live yesterday. You can’t, however, pay just $1. Rather, the most basic plan “VPS 1”, would require quarterly payment of $3/Quarter. The next step up, “VPS 2”, does allow you to pay $2/month though. However let’s come back to “VPS 1” and see what it includes. You can order it using this link.

  • 128MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 50GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

In fact all their plans are under our listing criteria. $5/month will get their “range-topping” VPS 5 with 640MB memory, 50GB storage and 250GB/month data. Servers in UK with Melbourne Network Solutions (test IP: 46.20.231.189). They own their own servers rather than leased. HostSign has its domain registered since Feb 2010, which is a UK Limited Company (Company Number: 6875529). They have also registered OnePoundVPS.co.uk.

    • It does not even have ssl and “You attempted to reach onedollarvps.com, but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as cloud.unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk.” if you add https there is a 403 error

Ok, this time there was paypal option, but it didn’t work (it just took me to the paypal page). I paid through the client area and that worked. Now I’m just waiting for my VPS …

    June 27, 2011 @ 6:20 am | Reply
  4. Hi guys,

We do accept paypal if required, simply chose it at the checkout.

There is no ssl on the onedollarvps.com domain as it simply redirects to a dedicated page on our hostsign website, however all credit cards are processed 3rd party by paypoint.net.

    Kind regards
    Alex

  5. P.S We can enable tun/tap, simply open a support ticket and we’ll do so.

IPv6 will be added over the next few days, and it’ll be 5 IPv6 addresses per VPS.

It looks like only the default CentOS template is 32 bit, all the other templates are 64 bit. Plus, I tried to install Ubuntu and it didn’t work (it removed the old OS, then nothing, empty disk).

Oh well, time to learn CentOS.

  31. At the end, I have ordered their VPS2… Quick review:

Nice to see the mail details without the root password, but the SolusVM password is in plain.
    SolusVM doesn’t have SSL, fail
    It has BURST!!! Wow!
Atom boxes with 4GB RAM, very nice.
Using one of the latest kernels 028stab089.1
With access to the 4 threads as someone said already. But is a very slow CPU anyway, and I am getting less performance than LowEndStock :P http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/431826
Debian 6 Minimal template =) about 200MB at boot (It will get increased as I do an apt-get update).
    Getting pretty nice network speeds.

I ordered a VPS 2 (256MB RAM, 20GB HD, 100GB BW) the first day these were listed and here’s some benchmarks:

      # wget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test

      • I ordered the same.

        dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync

The two day wait on new orders implies to me that they are not heavily overselling which is good to see.

  40. Just got an email from these guys..

    Dear Jack,

Thank you for choosing one of our new "Dollar VPS" range of services, I trust you are happy with our services, but please feel free to contact us if you require any help!

You may have read recently about the demise of other low price VPS providers such as HostRail, and I thought it best to assure you of our position:

Established in 2010, originally in the shared hosting and domain name market.
All our hardware with the exception of 1 or 2 off-site servers are wholly owned by our parent company; Premium Pixels Limited
Nominet TAG Holders, meaning any UK domain names are registered in our own TAG.
UK based company, incorporated under company number 07555280
Cash rich with no debt or pending finance
Whilst I realise you may be asking "How can you sell so cheap?", you must look at the bigger picture for our business - we generate income from all our product range, not just VPS's, and so this gives us some movement on the profit margin of our VPS range.

For those of you interested in more than a VPS, please take a look at our newest brand - www.dedicatedatom.com - a budget dedicated server offering!

Lastly, if you are thinking of purchasing a domain, or would like to transfer your domain to us, please check our domain service out at www.hostsign.co.uk/clients/domainchecker.php - we offer some of the best prices in the industry, along with excellent support!

Kind regards, and thank you for choosing us!

    Have a great weekend,

    Barry Scarisbrick

Director, Premium Pixels Limited, trading as HostSign.

P.S We never send marketing or spam emails, but give the current HostRail situation I though it best to clarify our position.

Uhh, their website I swear isn’t even finished. No ‘Company Info’ page, their WHMCS contact is broken (image CAPTCHA doesn’t work) and when you attempt to reset your account password you get a ‘The reset link you have followed is invalid. Please try again.’

Have to say, I’m less than impressed. Waited over 48hrs now. However if it does work out (ie: all set up, good servers etc…) then I’ll without doubt be staying there despite that bad set-up.

Just an update I have recieved. Ordered 5 days ago no but here is the explanation I have been sent:

This email concerns your order with HostSign, that is still pending.

We can confirm your order has been received, and will be processed shortly.

Unfortunately we have experienced a small delay with obtaining a new allocation of IP addresses from our uplink provider, which we need before we can setup your VPS.

We hope to have these IP addresses allocated very soon, and will be processing your order as soon as they come through.

Please accept our apologies for this shorty, unavoidable delay, and rest assured we will be adjusting the billing date on your service so you do not lose out.

Kind regards and thanks for your patience,

    HostSign Support Team

How can they make profit off these offers?

If you choose to pay yearly, it is just $10/year.

The delayed order and no sufficient IP subnet only indicate that they have not planned it fully and I seriously doubt they will ever become profitable.

I guess if you go for cheap dedi’s it works out quite well, though yeah I assume they sold out quicker than they would have expected and thus their planning was badly carried out.

Actually, I paid for one and got two. One I can log into Solus but the IP is not linked to that VM, and on the other, I can SSH to it, however Solus doesn’t work.

Also please fix your WHMCS password reset- I’d contact you via that though I can’t if I can’t log in, it keeps saying that the link I click expired. Oh, it would be nice if you also replied to my ticket I created yesterday.

Solus reports it as the states as do many other sites. Maybe I’m wrong, however an IP which doesn’t resolve, and one which is in the states is a little frustrating (yes I realize you get what you pay for :P)

Going to give them tomorrow (will be the 5th day of waiting, which clearly is more than enough to set up a working VM & also it will have been ~3 days to reply to a ticket), then will take it to paypal.

@Lawrie: Indeed, however iPlayer won’t work in the states. You expect to get what you buy. Wasn’t expecting anything amazing, but a VM you can connect to and basic support is something you’d expect :P

got my vps today and could not boot. The ticket was responded within an hour. Its working now.
I choose centos template. That is not working that good. So far had to replace a funny name server and clean up yum. And the yum update is 114MB.
But overall it seems much more stable than my boxes with i.e. hostrail. Unfortunately I will not get those 20 virtual support workers and all those other funny emails.
You should know a little bit how to help yourself with linux. Then this may become fun – especialy for this price. Where is the risk? Where would be a reason to complain?

I’ve got mine to at last. In the VPS Control Panel it is described as being in Scranton USA so indeed it looks like they’ve got some hosts with Burst.
The only place it actually states it’s in the UK is here in LEB but still I am a little disappointed because I thought I was getting a UK based VPS. Still for two dollars?

  55. Just to add a couple of comments on to this:

As our UK IP allocation is taking some time to come through, we have provisioned some new vps orders on our US nodes. Whilst we appreciate everyone wont be happy with this, we took the option of doing this rather than keeping people waiting longer.

Anyone that has been setup on a US node, we will be dropping an email to them as soon as we have space/allocation on our UK space offering them a move if they want.

I also understand peoples frustration at our slow-down in answering tickets/email, unfortunately this was due to the unseen increase in support requests coming through – you’ll be pleased to hear we have now allocated more resource to our support team.

If anyone does have an outstanding issue, unanswered query, or requires some direct support, please feel free to email me directly – alex.lawler@hostsign.co.uk

    Alex

Seems like they ran out of IP space and have done what they could to give people a ONE DOLLAR VPS as promised.

As a company, they probably have other things to do in addition to provisioning your ONE DOLLAR VPS and providing technical support to you for ONE DOLLAR per month.

As for benefit of the doubt, sure I will give them that, just like I did hostrail, intelliserve and ipap, but I know where that got me, so as a precaution I have just moved anything I need off my “two dollar” VPS until I know why my paypal subscription was cancelled and am convinced they will not have disappeared by the end of the month.

If you pay for your service by PayPal, you may have noticed your recurring subscription payment cancelled recently. HostSign is part of the Premium Pixels Ltd company, and until last week all payments via paypal were made to a shared PayPal account in the name of Premium Pixels Ltd.

Due to the recent growth of HostSign, we now have a dedicated PayPal account setup in the name of HostSign Server Hosting, which will be used for all future PayPal payments.

I’ve bought this VPS but stuck on a US node but still I can say that for the last 24 hours I’ve been extremely impressed with it. It’s definitely not over sold but you can’t rule it out as the limited company they registered the domain under has been dormant for over a year and also their website has no page for “company info” – which is the root of all conspiracies. But I wish these guys all the best and hope they break even and generate income so they can keep going. There’s always a suffering point though – like with Virgin Media, they were so over-whelmed with new accounts that they didn’t account for poor performance of their entire network, not to mention support is.was pretty much non existent.

I can imagine HostSign being overwhelmed with bullshit tickets, I do, but they only need 2 people doing 12 hour shifts to respond to all tickets – they’re not exactly going to get important corporate clients that need priority support on a 10 dollar a year VPS are they. It’s irresponsible that I’ve had to wait over 24 hours to get a response for such a small query yet 4 of my friends had pre sale questions answered within 10 minutes, even when my ticket when unanswered for 10 hours, they still responded to a pre sale question. But allow the BS about “different departments” – you’re a very small company that’s not even registered and isn’t legally allowed to trade under a dormant limited company number.

I want you guys to live and do well so no disrespect intended. Just get some red bulls down you and work your boobies off. You won’t get rich ignoring, delaying or avoiding your customers. Be nice to the people who pay you, if we go, you go. :-)

I’m thinking of abandoning this VPS because it has wasted so much time – I’ve only used it for IRC so far (2/3 weeks):

      Operating System: Debian 6 32bit
      Location: Scranton, United States
      Status: Offline

  83. The Dude:

I’ve been with them since the beginning and have a UK based VPS. For this price the service has been great. Quick response to tickets and a lot of uptime (was in the ~25 days area until it was restarted yesterday). Sometimes stuff slows down tho. At least once every week or two weeks my shell and web server will take several seconds to do anything.

I just received an email stating that the UK based servers will be moving too and their IP’s will change. This is extremely annoying for obvious reasons. I’m in the process of moving all my websites over to other servers so I have the downtime in my own control, plus I don’t know how good their new data center is. Definitely a big fat negative on their record for me. Not sure if I will keep my account of cancel it.

    • I’m gonna wait and see how the service is after migration. It might be fine :) With ultra-low budget hosts I think we’ve got to cut them some slack in situations like this. If they follow through, great. If not, well then it’s cancellation time.

4 hours ago: Email received that first set of migration were complete. No mention of new IP addressing.
3 hours ago: Ticket regarding new IP opened. Still unanswered.
Now: VPS may be up but I don’t know it’s new IP. SolusVM down for “maintenance”.

Please note we will not be responding indivually to tickets about the outage as all our resources are being concentrated on bringing the service backonline as quickly as possible.

Please accept our apologies for this issue, and rest assured credit will be made to those affected.

    Reply from HostSign:

    Apologies for the delayed reply.

We suffered an issue with our onedollarvps service which is about to be rectified. As you probably know when you sell that cheap, you end up with all sorts of customers that simply want a cheap VPS to use in malicious ways – mainly to hack other servers etc.

Over the last 2 weeks we’ve been busy moving to a new datacentre in the UK which will give us a better service, and replacing all hardware that the VPS’s reside on, along with new improved security measures and firewalls. Unfortunately what we anticipated would take 72hours max has taken just over a week!

We’re actually going to be restoring access to our dollarvps range either later today, but more likely tomorrow. Once done an email will be sent out to all clients, along with credits for the downtime.

All we can do is apologise for the outage, but i’m certain once we restore access you’ll notice a difference in the service.

    August 25, 2011 @ 4:49 pm | Reply
    • Well my question is, why wasn’t this communicated to clients, instead of leaving us dead in the water and, after numerous days of downtime and silence, assuming the worst?

It seems they setup completely new VPS’es instead of moving them – so I had to restore files from a backup. (Though, HostSign was kind enough to take a complete backup of my old VPS, and I could then manually restore what I needed from that).

I did not bother about asking the credit, just simply paid the new invoice. It had 3 USD on it, but the payment provider they use charged me 1,95 USD. Invoice now appears as paid in hostingsign client area. By the way I had to open a ticket just to get access to see the invoice, as registration for the client area (https://www.hostsign.co.uk/clients/clientarea.php) did not work, it said “Not allowed”.

I used a card I reserve for paying on the net, with very little money on it. I made the payment about 10 minutes ago, but they have not yet taken the money from my card. I will check it later.

Just a correction…. I paid 1,95 GBP (~ 3 USD) for the next three months, so no automatic credit was added here. Not that I bothered to ask for it.

And a sidenote: System runs smoothly here, but I am only using it for a playground. I have some weird download problems, but only through https and php, and it aseems to affects only images, but not all of them. Seems some memory limit, but could not find out yet. If I send over the very same images to another server, they download properly. In a similar system at Linode with 512 RAM (XEN) I do not experience this. Cannot find anything in the logs either. My onedollar has 128+128 RAM.

If it doesn’t work, the right thong to do is to cancel or blow it off, move your data elsewhere and move on. Not sit there fighting it trying to get it running or try to deal with an unresponsive company

It’s like my experience with YardVPS. They couldn’t get my vps allocated after 4 days, wouldn’t communicate with me as to what the issue was and just left me hanging. I canceled, voiced my displeasure and moved elsewhere. I didn’t wait three months like some of these folks.

Well it takes 30 seconds to fire off a support ticket. I doubt he has anything down because of this outage/downtime/whatever, but it’d still be nice to get what you’ve paid for. I have one of these VMs and mine’s back up and running.

I wouldn’t run anything important on it, but it was just too cheap to pass up so I thought that at $3 it was worth the risk.

I was more or less expecting something to go wrong, so when it did I didn’t care. I assumed I’d been ripped off so didn’t chase it up until I got the email saying that the new IPs were assigned, but we didn’t get the emails. Whether the emails were sent or not is another thing, but they gave me an account credit of the entire amount paid to them, so I’ve started fresh, with trepidation. I still won’t be putting anything important on it.

Since some people got account credits and their services are up and running. I’d be pissed off if I wasn’t one of those ones, so I’d probably be sending them a support ticket a day until they responded. I doubt cancelling it would end in a refund, so he may as well wait and try to get the account credit etc.

I do find it strange that some have had their VPSes sorted out, and others haven’t. Was my joke earlier about me having received their ponzi money close to the mark?

Yes, they are great company. Their service was down for a month, but at least they said it will be fixed in a day or two. Doesn’t matter if it actually took a month instead and they never answered tickets in meanwhile, but they fixed it!

Now all we have to do is request to be given what we payed for and never received, I did that 4 days ago and still waiting, but hey, they stand to their word, they’ll reply eventually!

Also, I have an invoice due tomorrow, maybe they’ll give me my month back once I pay for another 3 months. It’s not like I have a reason the believe they won’t survive another 3 months, the fact their website is down again is just a coincidence.

      Really awesome company!

This might not quite relate to the question, but right at the moment I cannot access my VPS there. This might not be their problem, though, but I cannot explain. When this morning I tried to log in several times, sshd always kicked me out immediately, right after accepting my credentials (tried with private key file and username/password as well). When tried to restart the server through the control panel, it could not restart at all. Now it is offline. (Btw: control panel is only available through http.) I also tried to log in through ssv via the control panel, it let me log in, then kicked out.

Yes, the system might have been compromised, and I am not an experienced admin, but I left a seemingly healthy system there the last time I was logged on. I had a firewall enabled, and only sshd, http and https were open. Similar issues have happened a few times before, when only a reinstall helped. Now I might just abandon the whole thing there.

Update: Now control panel reports the server online, but only disk space usage is displayed, memory is “0 of 0 used / 0 free”. Sshd does not respond. Also it says at the right side that “Memory: 128 MB, Burst: 256 MB”

Does “0 of 0 used” mean the server is not allocated memory?

      October 10, 2011 @ 7:47 am | Reply
      • 0 of 0 means off, or means that Solus can’t communicate with the node to report memory usage.

I seem to be the only person who still has an active service with them. It’s not useable in any way, but I can ssh into it and the control panel works.

It takes forever to do anything more complicated than ls, it times out constantly, network and drive performance is completely useless. I guess either the remaining users are abusing it, or individual VMs/the node itself have/has been compromised.

Quite how they were able to send an email to tell us we’re all fucked when they can’t at least keep the node running well, answer support tickets etc, christ knows. I never used it for anything important, so backups aren’t a problem. I doubt it’s stable enough to retrieve backups for those of you who do have a service though…

    News:

At the beginning of the year we purchased the remaining hardware, domain names, nominet tags and licenses from the old HostSign.co.uk company.

Whilst our initial intention was to simply recycyle the hardware, upon our inspections we found that there are a number of live client’s on the hardware we now own. We also found a full working copy of the HostSign website, and client system/database.

We have therefore intially restored the HostSign website, and any possible associated services. Please note whilst new orders will be accepted at HostSign.co.uk, we have no immediate plans to offer any $1 VPS products.

On inspection of the hardware we have, it is apparant we have a large number of VPS’ running. We plan to give 30 days notice of termination of these VPS’, and would urge anyone with an active, in-use VPS to open a support ticket so we can discuss the continuation of service.

Please note we are not in a position to deal with any billing/refund requests, we have simply purchased a large amount of hardware and have no past dealings with the running of the HostSign business.

    Best wishes,

  • Do not use LowEndBox for support issues. Go to your hosting provider and issue a ticket there. Coming here saying "my VPS is down, what do I do?!" will only have your comments removed.
  • Akismet is used for spam detection. Some comments may be held temporarily for manual approval.
  • Use <pre>...</pre> to quote the output from your terminal/console, or consider using a pastebin service.
