LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

OpenVirtuals - VPS Offer: 256MB OpenVZ/SolusVM for $16/year

Eric from OpenVirtuals just sent this offer over and we’re excited to have them back on LowEndBox. They have been featured quite a few times and they’ve always been pretty popular, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard from them. They’re currently celebrating their 5th year in business and are offering 50% off their annual plans in 5 locations.

A note from Eric:
“OpenVirtuals offers virtualization services via OpenVZ. Our container plans incorporate SSD and SSHD storage. We have nodes located in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Buffalo, Dallas, Seattle and Atlanta. In celebration of our 5th year in business, annual plans in the following 5 locations are 50% off: Chicago, LA, Buffalo, Dallas and Seattle. Please note, the stock in these locations are limited. We are currently out of stock in New York and in Atlanta.

OpenVirtuals has a unique way of combining both SSD and HD storage (what we call combo storage).

Notable features common in all of our plans are:

– Redundant storage for speed and reliability
– A dashboard view that lets you see the performance of your node
– 100% Uptime Guarantee supported by a generous SLA
– Instant VPS Provisioning
– Pre-made templates for popular installations such as: 64 bit Linux OSes, development frameworks like Ruby on Rails, web applications like WordPress, and specially tailored templates for our Mini 256 MB plans.

For developers, we have a new Mobile Developer Kit template that integrates Cordova and Cloud9 technologies, providing a seamless development environment for Android, Blackberry, Amazon Fire and Firefox OS.”

Super slow support. Opened an account last week, closed it and asked for a refund 2 days later when a simple “Enable FUSE for my VPS” got ignored after opening a ticket and a follow up asking for it politely.

Well no, Donb meant too expensive for what you get: a box with no support, and when you do get any support it’s way past too late. :)

I have a VPS to them for 2 years now, never had any problem except the time when I dumbly used their VPS for seedbox on DMCA content.

Looks like the order form is buggy, no matter what I enter as a domain name I get an error message “Invalid domain name” for no apparent reason…

Why would server1.somedomainthatIown.com not work ??

    February 14, 2017 @ 6:26 pm | Reply
    • That works for the hostname. You will also need to be fdqn with the nameservers (e.g. ns1.somedomain.com).

    # sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=diskbench bs=1M count=1024
    1024+0 records in
    1024+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 194.41 s, 5.5 MB/s

Genuinely upsetting results. I regret the $20 I just spent. Compare to DigitalOcean – performed the same job on a $5 droplet in 2.2 seconds.

Same test run on two separate OpenVirtuals instances:

#Professional-Cached plan in Atlanta (2 yrs old)
      1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 8.98236 s, 120 MB/s

      #Professional-Cached plan in Chicago (new)
      1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 21.4588 s, 50.0 MB/s

Not as good as it needs to be yet, but maybe they’re getting balanced and will be serviceable.

Then, how about opening doors to new customers when you actually have everything set up?

I bought a VPS with them a while back and it’s fast/stable. I also bought one on this deal and it’s SIGNIFICANTLY (50-100x) slower. Something is very different between old servers and new ones.

My instances are still largely unusable 10 days in. Is there still load balancing happening or plans to de-overload the servers?

My VPS with them is still almost unusable after more than a month. It’s easily one of the slowest, worst instances I’ve ever seen. I’ve run faster servers on Raspberry Pis with 15 year old drives attached.

This isn’t low-end, it’s no-end. At what point does everybody get our money back?

I’ve actually found that the server has been pretty good for the purposes of file storage with the occasional use of a script that checks for the latest copy of a few different files and then transfers them to the server. For $20/year for 180GB I haven’t found a cheaper option yet, and I’ve reviewed a few of these recently on my blog.

And no, I have no affiliation with these guys. Every I/O test makes me wonder why they use Atom, but the price reminds me I shouldn’t complain.

Apparently OpenVirtuals screwed up the maintenance work they promised to finish in two hours, or they never did it because they intended to cheat their customers.

It’s been 3 days now since they supposedly initiated that service (described below) but I haven’t had any access to my VPS and all its websitess have been down for more than 40 hoours already. Their website and control panel are still online but no one is responding to my tickets, and no one has fixed this critical problem, so I suspect they have become yet another “fly-by-night” hosting service.

Here’s the email they sent me to warn me that they were going to take my service offline (for 2 hours):

    Dear Valued OpenVirtuals Client,

To address node capacity needs, a hardware upgrade will be performed on the following date and time. The maintenance duration will take 3 hours. Please plan accordingly.

    Day/Date: Monday — April 16, 2018
Time: 10 PM to 12 AM Eastern Standard Time

If you have any questions and/or concerns please contact us by initiating a ticket with technical support.

    Regards,

We’re still here! On the week of 16-April, there was a problem with the ticketing system that we (unfortunately) discovered after several days. Hence, our responses to those tickets were very late. If you’re still having issues, please open a new ticket.

For the record the maintenance was for a kernel update. I’ve pasted the actual notification we sent below.

      Dear Valued OpenVirtuals Client,

To address a critical security vulnerability, a kernel update will be performed on the following date and time. The maintenance duration will take 2 hours. Please plan accordingly.

      Day/Date: Monday — April 16, 2018
Time: 10 PM to 12 AM Eastern Standard Time

You may have received more than one notice, if you have two or more services located in separate data centers. To determine the nodes where your services are located, please log in to the SolusVM control panel (select Manage, inspect Node field).

If you have any questions and/or concerns please contact us by initiating a ticket with technical support.
