Quality Servers - £3.75 256MB Xen VPS in UK

QualityServers Merry Christmas everyone! James from Quality Servers, which appears to be a QuickVPS.co.uk rebranded, emailed me their Christmas specials. Use promo code XMAS50 to get 50% off recurring discount. You can then get their “Bronze VPS” for £3.75/month (~USD$5.79) after the discount. Specification here:

  • 256MB memory/256MB swap
  • 10GB storage
  • 100GB/month data transfer
  • Xen/SolusVM

The servers are available in either Kent in UK (Sota Com, Order it here) or Tampa FL in USA (Hivelocity? Order it here). James’ thread on WHT described why Quality Servers was launched — together with BuildAVPS targeting two different segments of VPS market. However it appears both QuickVPS and BuildAVPS are redirecting to QualityServers now. However from previous posts on QuickVPS James does seem to run a good shop there.

  4. Bern:

Summary: Shocking performance, unusual customer service.

I knew I was getting a low-end VPS but the performance of the VPS in this offer is incredibly bad.

Creating a 1 GB empty file was horrible:

    server2 ~ # time dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/zero bs=1024k count=1024; time sync
    1024+0 records in
    1024+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 437.474 s, 2.5 MB/s
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/zero bs=1024k count=1024 0.00s user 0.47s system 0% cpu 7:23.80 total
    sync 0.00s user 0.01s system 0% cpu 18.254 total

Output of “dstat 5” during the “dd” shows that 1 CPU was 100% wio (it’s an 8-way system):

    ----total-cpu-usage---- -dsk/total- -net/total- ---paging-- ---system--
usr sys idl wai hiq siq| read writ| recv send| in out | int csw
      0 0 88 12 0 0| 0 2178k|1072B 270B| 0 0 | 133 209

HTTP requests are served agonisingly slowly. SSH is unusable as it stalls every few seconds. “apt-get update” can take MINUTES rather than seconds.

A few days after signing up, I received an automated email from them asking what I thought and I replied with my concerns about performance, including a FireBug screenshot and the output from “dstat”. This, in turn, sent me a link to a ticket in their support system – which doesn’t work. They haven’t responded by email either.

I cannot recommend this product at all and their service leaves a lot to be desired.

  5. Hi Bern,

We responded by e-mail when we got the reply and we have taken your concerns about performance very seriously in moving you to another node while we figure out the issue on that node. We will also be offering you a free month for the hassle.

  6. Hi Bern,

The migration is now complete and I have rerun the test you ran before to verify the improvement:

    sh-3.2# time dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/zero bs=1024k count=1024; time sync
    1024+0 records in
    1024+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 20.7424 s, 51.8 MB/s
