LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

QuickWeb - $35.88/Year 256MB OpenVZ VPS in UK

QuickWeb Roel sent me an email earlier this month about QuickWeb‘s new UK based OpenVZ VPS hosting offer. Same price as many previous offers$35.88/year or $24/6 months. You get

  • 256MB guaranteed/384MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 250GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Order it here. Servers with UK2.net (test IP: 109.123.119.49) and nLayer/Level3 transit between UK/US. For orders in February you also get free upgrade to Gbit connectivity (usually $10/year). The same offer is also available in Germany, Los Angeles and Phoenix. I have also noticed that the name of the plan has been updated to “Budget Box VZ II”, rather than “Test Box VZ II”. I guess the previous plan name might have scarde a few prospective customers away.

      Hello.

On sign-up page (http://quickweb.co.nz/lowendbox), for Budget Box VZ II there is an option: “Double the allocations of standard Test Box VZ for extra $1!”.
How ? There is no option when ordering, no matter what location I choose.

      Regards,
      /Sorin

That’s in reference to “Budget Box VZ” which is 1.99. Budget Box VZ II with everything doubled is 2.99 (i.e including the extra $1, they renamed “Test Box” to “Budget Box” but forgot to edit the description).
That’s how i understood it anyway and it’s what i bought.

I’m in The Netherlands, and this is my first server in the USA.
I used that old offer in Phoenix (still works), because I couldn’t find the link for the UK.
I can say, although the distance is huge, the speed is great!
Even faster than my 4 other VPS’s in The Netherlands.

But there’s one problem: The Debian installation is incomplete (no Aptitude, apt-get update doesn’t work like it has to, no Squeeze), but using CentOS, everything works.
This is an issue for me, since I’m used to Debian, and I like using Debian better than CentOS.

I only see Debian 6.0 (64 bit) Minimal.
Isn’t it better to have a full installation of it?
I mean, I don’t want to take risks for not having Aptitude, non-working “apt-get” command, etc., like I had with Debian 5 (which wasn’t a minimal installation).
These commands need to work, as they’re Debian’s core apps.
I mean, Debian without Aptitude is like CentOS without Yum, or OpenSuSE without YaST, or Arch without Pacman.

For some reason, minimal versions of the OS uses more RAM than the “normal” ones.

I would advise anyone from taking this offer.

They have been suffering IO issues for weeks now and refuse to work on resolving it, claming the node is “pretty fast”, and saying they have no additional nodes to transfer my VPS over to.

Here is a bench I took the other day, I think it speaks for itself:

    [root@vps ~]# dd bs=1M count=128 if=/dev/zero of=test oflag=dsync
    128+0 records in
    128+0 records out
    134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 482.603 seconds, 278 kB/s

        128+0 records in
